Derek Jeter is not only one of the greatest Yankees of all-time, he's one of the most admired players of all-time.

Whether you like the Yankees or not, it's difficult to dislike Jeter, who has been called a "symbol for everything that's right about the game." He's almost too good to be true--modest, nice, likeable, polite, handsome, gracious and extremely talented. He has a near pristine reputation with the Yankees, and he believes in being a role model. Even his opponents respect him.

On the field, Jeter is a gifted five-tool player who has gained legendary status. A starter since 1996, he passed Lou Gehrig as the Yankees' all-time hits leader in 2010 and he should notch his 3,000th hit in 2011.

Jeter was named Rookie of the Year in 1996, World Series MVP in 2000 and All-Star MVP in 2000. He has won five Gold Gloves and been named an American League All-Star on 10 occasions.

This book is not a biography of Jeter. Instead, it offers a highlight of Jeter's career and a glimpse at his life off the field and what makes him special.

The biggest chapter deals with Jeter's post seasons. This is understandable since he has appeared in 14 ALDS, 9 ALCS and seven World Series.

Articles written by more than 25 New York Times writers are the source of the text. Most of the articles are abridged and run between 100 and 500 words. It makes for quick, easy reading. An interesting statistic section is included.

More than 100 color photographs by 50 New York Times photographers capture the many sides of Jeter. The photographs along with an eye-appealing layout make this a beautiful, keepsake book.

This new book about star shortstop Derek Jeter is a handsome volume full of splendid color photography. The tome is not a new production, in truth, but is mostly a compilation of material that has previously appeared in the New York Times, with some a new essay and some chapter introductions by Tyler Kepner, who spent 2002-2009 covering Jeter and the Yankees for the Times.

The photos are by NYT photographers, and are often spectacular. They are the best part of the book. The reproduction and color of the photography is excellent. There are also a few vintage pictures of past Yankees like Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio that are a great deal of fun. I truly enjoyed the photography.

Of less interest is the prose. The new bits by Kepner are fine, though not exceptionally enlightening. The bulk of the writing is reproduced from articles printed in the Times by writers including Kepner and other NYT reporters past and present like Dave Anderson, George Vecsey, and Buster Olney. The writing does not form a consistent narrative, and jumps around to fit the arrangement of the book, but it does provide an at-the-time perspective on Jeter's career.

While the book does form a picture of Jeter's life and his career, it is not truly a biography. Even so, it does capture a piece of Jeter, of his.....cool, for lack of a better word. Jeter has always had a certain presence that has marked him as a star, and an ability to rise to the occasion that has endeared him to Yankee fans. You will get a look at his background and his family here though there is not a lot of depth.

Yankees fans will certainly like the book, and it is a handsome volume with pretty pictures. If you are looking for a critical evaluation of Jeter, you won't find it here: neither does it provide any in-depth analysis of his life. This is more of a coffee-table type book, but it is a very attractive volume.

Anything the New York Times does , as long as you stay clear of their leftist political stance , is terrific......................especially when they cover sports. Lots of great pics and a wonderful insight into a real pros life. A must if your a Jeter fan.

I bought this book for my #2 son. Of course, DJ is my favorite Yankee player of all time. I may have lucked out on this copy because it is definitely a beautiful edition. With a nice paper cover, solid binding, hardcover, it is sure to last for ages to come and maybe one day, read by my #2.
In the mean time, I've enjoyed its presentation and articles from DJ in the early Kalamazoo days through coming up in the ranks from single A to his first game at the old Kingdome in Seattle.
Definitely get this book!
