Review

This is an important book with a compelling personal story by Tina Swithin. A must-read for anyone dealing with a narcissistic personality in a love relationship or in a divorce. As a family law attorney, I have observed this dynamic first-hand in divorce and custody cases. The narcissist spouse thrives on high conflict and will play out this dysfunction both inside and outside the legal system for years. These cases are pervasive, insidious and difficult for everyone the spouse, the children, the lawyers, the court staff, the judge, and even the mental health professionals who are brought in to help. Because of the nature of the personality disorder, the narcissist can appear perfectly normal and be hard to identify and diagnose. Tina Swithin is living testimony that it is possible to meet this dysfunction head-on and to take proactive legal and practical measures to protect the children and bring the truth to light. What I found most compelling about Tina s story is that she has not just survived these battles but has grown personally and spiritually from her struggle. Her book is as much about her emotional/mental health journey as it is about her legal saga. Through her writing, blog and public education campaign, Tina reaches out to individuals and professionals dealing with this disorder. Her story provides valuable information as well as inspiration and hope. --Alison L. Patton, Esq., Attorney and Mediator, Author of LemonadeDivorce.com, contributor to Huffington Post

It was an absolute honor for me to meet Tina Swithin. Every day, Tina is helping women get through a painful period of their life. Last night after my Broadway show, I was greeted at the stage door by a woman who gave me her divorce papers to autograph. I asked her if she was ok and a flood of tears quickly ensued. I understood. I suggested that she look up, One Mom s Battle and that she would find support and great advice to help her get through divorcing a narcissist. Thank you, Tina for creating a wonderful resource to share!!!! --Christie Brinkley, Actress and Supermodel

I have been a dedicated follower of Tina's blog and writings since early 2012. She shares her story and educates her readers with thoughtfulness, care, and intelligence. Tina's motivations are clearly the love of her precious children and the desire to help others navigate the challenging labyrinth of divorcing a narcissist. Her dedication inspires me to fight right along side of her and to encourage others to keep fighting, too. Her message is one of inspiration and hope that one day the justice system, mental health professionals, social workers, and other counselor-types will "get it" and redefine what "in the best interest of the children" should have meant all along. --Paula Carrasquillo, Yogi, Advocate, Contributing Writer to the Washington Times and Author of Escaping the Boy: My Life with a Sociopath

About the Author

Tina Swithin has gained international attention for her blog titled, "One Mom's Battle" and for her role as an advocate for change in the Family Court System. Tina has survived a Category 5 Divorce Hurricane and has taken shelter in her blog and new book, "Divorcing a Narcissist: One Mom's Battle." Tina currently resides in sunny California with her husband, two daughters and a three-legged tortoise named, "Oliver."

More About the Author

Tina Swithin survived a Category Five Divorce Hurricane and took shelter by writing her first book titled, "Divorcing a Narcissist: One Mom's Battle" along with chronicling her journey on her internationally recognized blog, "One Mom's Battle." In 2009, Tina embarked on a hellish custody battle while acting as her own attorney and in 2013, Tina's battle came to an end when she walked out of a courtroom with the one thing that she had dedicated her life to securing: her daughters' safety. Tina recently finished her second book, "Divorcing a Narcissist: Advice for the Battlefield" which provides guidance and advice for those in the trenches of a high-conflict divorce.

Tina has chosen to assume the title of survivor versus victim and has become an advocate for change in the Family Court System after seeing the flaws first-hand. Over the past two years, Tina has been instrumental in the start-up of one-hundred chapters of "One Mom's Battle" throughout five different countries (United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa and United Kingdom). Tina believes that the courts have lost sight of their primary focus, which should be the best interest of the child and instead, are focusing too heavily on mothers' rights and fathers' rights. Tina is working to raise awareness of the issues in the Family Court System and to educate the general public on Narcissistic Personality Disorder. High conflict divorces are on the rise and the children are suffering unnecessarily due to the lack of education on the front lines--and behind the judicial bench.

In addition to being an Author, Tina works in Public Relations and has been awarded honors such as the "Top 20 Professionals Under 40" and the "Top 40 Professionals Under 40" in several regional California newspapers. Tina has appeared on shows such as "Dr. Carole's Couch" with world-renown psychologist, Dr. Carole Lieberman, Huff Post LIVE, and on Candace Smyth's North Star Series. Tina's book and blog have been featured in outlets such as Glamour Magazine, SF Gate, Examiner, LA Parent Magazine, About.com, Yahoo, Huffington Post and the Washington Times. Her first book has garnered a 5-star rating with over 115 reviews on Amazon. In her spare time, Tina writes for the Huffington Post Divorce and HopeAfterDivorce.org where she delves into the tricky world of divorcing a narcissist.

Tina's message was just what I needed to hear! I'm not alone. I'm not the crazy one. Keep up the fight. After 3 years (so far) through a very acrimonious divorce experience, I finally have some explanation why it has been so hard. I heard of a narcissist before, but I never considered it to be such a devastating personality disorder until I started learning more about it. It took me years to recognize the subtle and constant abuse that narcissism created in my marriage. Tina's story helped me go "no contact" as much as possible, and begin the process of reclaiming my life and happiness. I feel I have more tools to use when my ex-narc will start again with whatever-he-tries-next.

Thank you Tina, for the Ah-ha! moments throughout your book that helped me recognize classic narcissistic behavior, and how to deal with it. Thank you for the red-flag reflections. Thank you for "getting it" when so many people around me don't. Only his closest family members see the bizarre and abusive behavior. Others see him as a charming successful and all around good guy. Thank you for reminding me to document everything, because eventually his teflon coating will wear thin.

I just can't say thank you enough for the awareness and education that you are bringing to this topic. I donated my copy to my local women's shelter.

A well written, raw, honest and open! I hope this opens the world to this silent abuse that needs to be dealt with both in the "system", and in mental illness arenas

For so long I have been searching for a book that validated what I was going through; that could show me that I wasn't the only one in the world that was going through this. So grateful to Tina Swithin for writing this book. I could not put it down and read it in one night. Amazing and highly recommend to anyone who is going through a high conflict divorce and/or is dealing with a narcissistic ex-spouse.

The author shares her battle of navigating the family court system while at the same time dealing with a high conflict individual. I wish I had had this years ago for the the encouragement and validation that divorcing a narcissist entails. I left my ex husband when my children were about the same age as Tina's but caved in and went back because of how overwhelming it was to deal with all that is entailed with the court system, family and friends questioning whether I was over reacting to the mental, emotional and physical abuse in my marriage, and a church that refused to get involved, telling me instead that as "the spiritual one" I had the responsibility to be the strong one. I finally got the courage to leave after 25 years of marriage when I realized the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result, nothing I did could change an individual, they are responsible for their own choices. Tina is an inspiration, not having the funds for an attorney, educating herself and battling on. Please, take the time to read this book and gain validation and inspiration for you own choice to not stay in an abusive situation. Do it for yourself, and your children.

I read this book in one day! (something I would usually never do). I love this book and am so grateful to have found it. It added clarity to a situation that had confused me for many years. People would tell me "you are so lucky to have a husband like him"- only I never felt lucky at all. I felt emotionally abused and abandoned. Tina described the mind boggling manipulation that I was experiencing so well. The book gave me tools that really work. Some things I had come to realize on my own but doubted them because others in my life did not seem to believe me. So many people had so many suggestions on how I should deal with him- none of them would work on this type of personality. Thank you Tina for your insight and ability to articulate the narcissists behaviour and its effects. You have changed my life greatly for the better. This book is more than worth the read if you think your partner/ former partner is a narcissist.

I just started reading this book and have already reached page 120! I bought the book because I have divorced a narcissist and have had a horrible, never-ending 5-year-long battle with this man. It is comforting to know others understand this craziness although I would not wish this on my worst enemy. I can handle him, it is what he is doing to our daughter that I find so hard to live with and as the writer states, the court system just isn't knowledgable about this problem!

I'm not sure I will be able to say, "thank you" enough. Your book (and blog) let me see that I am not the only one out there. It has taken me 3 years to find a book that wasn't scientific, psychological, and over my head. I don't need to know why he is the way he is. I need to know how to deal with him now. Your book and words are heartfelt and touching. It gives me strength to know that I too shall get through this. Every court appearance and every frustration in the very screwed up system are validated. There have been times I felt like this was only my experience. I no longer feel that way. Thank you for having the courage to share your story and your children's story. This is a MUST read for anyone going through a high conflict divorce with a Narc. It makes you realize you are not the only one out there.
