George Washington: The Crossing
After the Battle of Trenton, members of the Continental Congress, interested in how his troops responded to offensive action after a year of defeat and retreat from the enemy, wrote Washington asking how his troops performed during the battle. General Washington’s letter written in response to the president of the Continental Congress, John Hancock, on December 27, 1776, is printed in this book in RED lettering. These are Washington’s own words, enhanced with contemporary drawings of the time, telling his story of the Battle of Trenton.

this is a wonderful book. it's great because it's concise which makes it a great gift and a potential stepping stone for a younger audience. It's length makes it less intimidating than the larger books on Washington and the Amer. Rev. (if you're a Amer. history buff 'The War of the Revolution' by Ward is great, as well as 'The real George Washington', but they're huge books so maybe not the best starting point for some. ) I got the kindle version of 'The Crossing', will be getting the HC's for the nephews. The point of this book isn't to give an in depth account of events, instead it serves as a patriotic shot in the arm. Powerful, concise and approachable.

The cross media mixture of classical artwork, etchings, and historical documents is Jack Levin's signature style. This fantastic book is a must have for school children learning about our Revolutionary War. As the author correctly points out, the Battle of Trenton was one of the first major turning points in the war that secured our nation as independent and sovereign.

I purchased this book in both the hardcover and the ebook formats. I am happy to say that the ebook has pictures that are clickable so you can zoom in for detail. I especially liked the maps, but then, I'm a map person! I greatly enjoyed reading the words of General Washington as he related the details of the battle to John Hancock, then president of the Continental Congress.

A number of years ago, Newt Gingrich and William Forstchen wrote a historical fiction titled 'To Try Mens Souls' which gave a detailed account of the march on Trenton from a typical soldier's point of view. The internal conflict and the harsh conditions of winter were fully described. Honestly though, it took longer to read than the actual battle took to win. 'George Washington: The Crossing' is a great compliment, and both would make a great pairing of books in any library.

Lastly, I think I echo many out there when I write that I would love to be a mere fly on the wall at a Levin family dinner. Jack Levin is not only a remarkable teacher, he is also a shining example of a father. His passion for our country is evident every time I turn on my radio at 6pm Eastern. For this I say 'Thank You sir, and may you have a very Happy Father's Day'.

Home schooler families - buy it. Period.

While i have read a dozen or more descriptions of the Battle of Trenton none have interspersed the words of Washington with the historical detail of this small book. It would be well worth the price just for the text but adding the drawings and photos with the battle maps it is a gem. This book should be required text for all high school history classes. This gem brings the battle to life. We have become a country of sunshine patriots if not ignorant sheep and this book reminds us of the sacrifices of our forefathers.

I decided to order this book to read to my budding history buff, 1st grade son. When I read the preface by the author's son, I knew I had made a good decision. I read the book for a bedtime story and it produced many many questions from my history inquisitive 1st grader. The next morning he woke up and asked me to quiz him on the details of the battle. With the many illustrations, it helped to keep his attention and pique his excitement for the topic.

As others have said, this isn't an in depth book you'll use for a college thesis. Rather, it's a quick read that sums up a very important battle in the Revolutionary War. I for one desire my children to grow up with pride for their country. I want my son to know that brave men under horrendous circumstances fought against impossible odds to have Liberty. If he can understand that he lives in a great place and the principles of our Constitution are worth fighting for, then I'll be content. Just as the preface of the book says, a discussion has started and questions are being asked. As a 1st grader, my son now knows more about George Washington, The Continentals, the Delaware River, the drama of 1776 and The Battle of Trenton than a majority of seniors graduating high school this month do.

Well done.

This is a magnificent read. Loaded with illustations, paintings, and maps that combine with the writing to create a facinating study of our history. Kudos to Mr. Levin.

Can't wait to give it to my son! He can take it with him to summer camp and share it with his friends. This can be a good camp fire discussion as he will be at camp a week before the Fourth of July. Thanks, Mr. Levin.

To be honest I did not pay much attention to the length of the book when I ordered it. I am an avid history book reader and typical history books are quite detailed and usually range several hundred pages. This book is about 60 or so pages long and oddly doesn't even include page numbers (am I missing them)? More so, there is very little text and a lot of diagrams and pictures. So if you are a history buff this is probably not going to satisfy you. That being said, I was actually happy to see that this book could be good for a younger target audience. Ages 12 to 16 or so I think would be ideal. It is hard to get that age group to read anything non-fiction. Maybe this is one of the reasons there is so much intellectual and moral decline in this country. This is important history and young people need to know how much was sacrificed and how many suffered for the idea of freedom that is so much taken for granted today (and is slowly being whittled away by the enormous bureaucracy that our government has become). George Washington and the founders would be mortified. If I had a young teen I would certainly encourage a read of this book. It is a simple and quick read with very good historical illustrations that should interest them. Maybe they would be encouraged to learn more about the founding of this country and the courage and sacrifice of some amazing people; it is a great example of what a true leader is (courageous, humble, and non self serving), the opposite of our disgraceful self important leadership of today's career politicians.
