I own a good amount of "unorthodox" exercise manuals. I have ordered books that turned out to be, literally, xeroxed copies of old training manuals bound together in cheap plastic folders that a high school student might use, and marketed as "lost secrets of blah blah blah". So between my past experiences and some of the negative reviews on here about this book, I didn't know what to expect. What I got was a nice looking, thick book packed full of information. I am a former personal trainer and it used to blow my mind how uninformed people are about bodyweight exercise. This book delivers the exact same message that I used to try to drill into my clients heads, and that is: YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NOT NEED ANYTHING BUT YOUR OWN BODY IN ORDER TO WORK OUT!!! I can't stand it when people tell me "I'm fat and/or out of shape because I can't make it over to the gym". Let me make this very clear, wherever you are sitting/standing right now, you can do a hardcore work out that will leave your limbs trembling and have you dripping with sweat. If you keep at it, your body will adapt to whatever it is that you are doing, which means your fitness levels will have gone up! This book will show you what to do. One of the complaints I've read about the book is that it is not put together well and there is no program or regimen to follow. I don't know what book that person was reading, because it's all in there. Sure, after a few months of doing the basics you may want to (god forbid) think for yourself and maybe use a little inventiveness to make your workouts more challenging, but is that a bad thing? My only real complaint about the book is the model Bronson chose to use to demonstrate the exercises.Read more ›

I have bought this book and done my best to follow its advice for 52 days, after which I feel I can now write a fair review. First I will say everything I can say that is positive about this book. POSITIVE: The book is cheap and, if you are willing to work hard, both mentally and physically, contains guidelines for developing your own fitness regime at home, using only a room and the odd prop such as a chair, pillow, 2 saucepans, etc. After 52 days of following this book, my shoulders, upper arms and chest are definitely showing some signs of getting bigger and more defined. Again, if you really set your mind to it, you could, using this book, conceivably develop your own fitness programme without travelling to and from a gym and paying membership fees. And now the negative elements of this book. NEGATIVE: The book is appallingly written and appallingly edited. There is no coherent structure or programme contained therein, no real step-by-step approach. The only way you can make it work is by buying a separate exercise book or note pad and rewriting everything in "Solitary Fitness" to make it structured and comprehensible. The pictures are not always clear and neither are all the explanations. Some of the exercises are just plain weird (the weirdest of which are several exercises aimed at your "anal muscles" - I'm not kidding). After 52 days there has been no impact or progress in my stomache area. If anything, I think my love handles have grown. Another disadvantage is that the programme is extremely time-consuming. It takes easily more than an hour a day (my own day 29 took up most of the day) and you are expected to do it six days a week. I understand that a prisoner has all the time in the world, but people with jobs and families don't.Read more ›

When I first found out about Charles Bronson, I was blown away. He single-handedly shut down a prison after taking a news reporter 'hostage' just to mess with everyone and show how bad of a dude he was. He punched through a sheet of bulletproof glass. He held numerous records for push ups and sit ups. He has the title of 'most dangerous criminal in England', and here the guy's never killed anyone! But it's easy to see why the guy's so dangerous- he's more fit than most professional body builders, and he doesn't even have regular access to a gym or healthy foods. And yet, the guy went and wrote this book, and is letting us in on his secrets on how he did it. As far as I'm concerned, he's the man for that alone. I got this book to see what it is he all does, and to try it out for myself. Keep in mind that I'm not some kind of exercise maniac, though I do try and do 300 push ups, sit ups and leg lifts a night at the very least. But after doing just -one- of the Solitary rounds, I was sweating and my muscles felt hard for a good hour or two after I was done!
Solitary Fitness has tons of great information before and after the actual Solitary Fitness program. Bronson (who sometimes refers to himself as Bronco) tells you what stretches are important, how many of them to do and for how long. I know that stretching is important before working out, and I spend at least 20 minutes doing stretches before I lift weights or go over my martial arts move set, but some people don't get it, and Bronson drills it in your head how important they are. He then goes over how to work on specific muscles and single them out, which you'll be able to do quickly thanks to his instructions.
