Nicholas Sparks clearly knows how to tug at heartstrings and so he proves again with this tale of two love stories ... The fortunes of both romances are described with a noticeably old-fashioned tenderness which prizes love and devotion and which, especially in Ira's story, provides a proper, old-fashioned weepie Daily Mail (Sparks) has a canny knack of tapping into what makes us human, and before you know it, you are rooting for Ira and engrossed in his life story Irish Independent A fiercely romantic and touching tale, with the added bonus of a sexy cowboy. When it comes to tales about love, Nicholas Sparks is one of the undisputed kings Heat Will suck you in and leave you a sobbing mess Star Magazine --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Nicholas Sparks is one of the world's most beloved storytellers. All of his books have been New York Times bestsellers, with over 97 million copies sold worldwide, in more than 50 languages, including over 65 million copies in the United States alone.

Sparks wrote one of his best-known stories, The Notebook, over a period of six months at age 28. It was published in 1996 by Warner Books. He followed with the novels Message in a Bottle (1998), A Walk to Remember (1999), The Rescue (2000), A Bend in the Road (2001), Nights in Rodanthe (2002), The Guardian (2003), The Wedding (2003), True Believer (2005) and its sequel, At First Sight (2005), Dear John (2006), The Choice (2007), The Lucky One (2008), The Last Song (2009), Safe Haven (2010) and The Best of Me (2011), as well as the 2004 non-fiction memoir Three Weeks With My Brother, co-written with his brother Micah. His seventeenth novel, The Longest Ride, was published on September 17, 2013.

Safe Haven, Sparks's eighth film adaptation and on which he served as a Producer, opened February 14, 2013, taking top box office honors for Valentine's Day. The ninth film adaptation of one of his novels, The Best of Me, will open in October and the tenth, The Longest Ride, will open next spring. Along with The Lucky One, Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John and The Last Song, adaptations of Nicholas Sparks novels have a cumulative worldwide gross of over three-quarters of a billion dollars.

In 2012, Sparks and his publishing agent and creative partner Theresa Park, launched Nicholas Sparks Productions, with Park as President of Production. A film and television production company, they inked a two-year, first-look, non-writing, Executive Producer deal at Warner Horizon. Just four months later, Nicholas Sparks Productions announced the first three television series to be developed under that agreement, in collaboration with three different networks: TNT, ABC Family and Lifetime. NSP recently announced the acquisition of Gayle Sayers's life and memoir rights for a feature film to be co-produced with Michael Costigan. Nicholas Sparks Productions, in association with Senator Films, anticipate moving forward with a local language feature film for the German speaking audience in the near term.

Deliverance Creek, which marks Sparks's television producing debut, will premiere as a special two-hour movie on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014 on Lifetime. With an original script written by Melissa Carter, directed by Jon Amiel, Deliverance Creek stars Lauren Ambrose. From Nicholas Sparks Productions and Warner Horizon, Melissa Carter, Nicholas Sparks, Theresa Park and Jon Amiel are Executive Producers on the telefilm.

Sparks lives in North Carolina with his family. He contributes to a variety of local and national charities, and is a major contributor to the Creative Writing Program (MFA) at the University of Notre Dame, where he provides scholarships, internships, and a fellowship annually. Along with his wife, he founded The Epiphany School in New Bern, North Carolina. As a former full scholarship athlete (he still holds a track and field record at the University of Notre Dame) he also spent four years coaching track and field athletes at the local public high school. In 2009, the team he coached at New Bern High School set a World Junior Indoor Record in the 4 x400 meter, in New York. The record still stands.

In 2011, Nicholas and his wife launched the Nicholas Sparks Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to improving cultural and international understanding through global education experiences for students of all ages. Between the foundation, and the personal gifts of Nicholas and Catherine Sparks, more than $10 million dollars have been distributed to deserving charities, scholarship programs, and projects. Because Nicholas and Catherine Sparks cover all operational expenses of the foundation, 100% of donations are devoted to programs.

I love Nicholas Sparks. I have read all his books and I am always excited when a new one is going to be released. Even though, you sort of know what going to happen in a Nicholas Sparks book, I still love them. The Longest Ride was no exception. It intertwines a story about two couples, one old, and one young and does a really good job of connecting them together at the end. I don't want to give too many details but anyone who loves Nicholas Sparks or just wants to read a cute love story should read this, you won't be disappointed. Not to be corny, but, I think what I love most about Nicholas Sparks books is that the guy in the story always really, truly, and without reservation loves the girl and would do anything for her.

This is the best of Nicholas Sparks since The Notebook - 5 stars ++++! Oh course, I have read all his books and have seen all his movies --they are all great - however, I will say The Longest Ride is at the top of the list with The Notebook. What a beautifully written poignant love story and fell in love with all the characters (especially Luke).

I had purchased the book on pre-order; however, was busy packing for a long extended stay and drive to Highlands, NC and ironically Winston-Salem, NC (from West Palm Beach) which is a 12 hour drive, so decided to purchase the audio from audible.com for my long drive on iPod for next week. However, started listening to it yesterday while packing, and had to finish it tonight as could not put it down--(so will need another book for my trip next week)! (Ironically, listened to The Best of Me by Nicholas on audio for my last trip two years ago from NC to South Florida.)

I would highly recommend the audio as Ron McLarty (whom I love as is the narrator of David Baldacci's books) and January LaVoy - made the book! They did an exceptional job with the performance of Ira/Ruth and Sophie/Luke.

Another huge plus - as a native of NC (Piedmont area) it was nice to hear Nicholas incorporating the Piedmont/Western Carolina mountain areas of NC versus the eastern coast as some of his other books. All the familiar places, I love (Winston-Salem, Old Salem, King, Grove Park Inn, Black Mountain, Asheville, Biltmore, Pinnacle, Clemmons, Yadkinville, 421, Pilot Mountain, Wake Forest, Fabien Restaurant, etc.) Kept waiting for Village Tavern Reynolda Road.

I've been a fan of Mr. Sparks since the Notebook. I never cared about the male species who made fun of him because he could write a darn good love story. Unfortunately, I don't feel the same about this book. While Ira and Ruth's story is lovely, I found myself skimming through the pages due to boredom.
The story of Sophia and Luke was more interesting to me. However, when I realized Luke's real reason for continuing to ride bulls, I became more frustrated with the story. (SPOILER) Luke's mom was often mad at him and barely speaking to him because he continued to ride. It is later revealed that Luke rides because he had previously had a serious injury as a result of a fall that resulted in major hospital and rehab bills. Because he could not get insurance as a bull rider, his mom mortgaged their ranch. All of this is well and good, but what frustrated me was that, as a mom, instead of being mad I would have sold the livestock and put the ranch up for sale before letting my stoic son continue to ride bulls (especially knowing that one bad fall could kill him). While I understand why a young man would feel he needed to earn the money to save the ranch, as a mother I would not allow it and would give up the ranch to the bank before allowing my son to ride one more bull. Of course, if this was the case, there would be no story.
I felt the ending wrapped things up too easily. I wish Ira had had more of a chance to know Sophia and Luke after the rescue as well as Sophia's love of art and her calling in life. I feel that if Ira had lived, it would have made for a better story. Instead, things were left up to chance, and I feel the ending was just a little too contrived.

In "The Longest Ride" Nicholas Sparks weaves intermingled stories of two completely different couples which you know from the start must intersect at the end.

Ira Levinson is over 90 but still driving when he crashes off the road in snow and ice. Badly injured and waiting for rescue he reflects on his life with his beloved wife Ruth who died a few years earlier. In delirium Ruth returns to encourage him and talks about their life together. Every year on a particular anniversary Ira writes a letter to Ruth about their life and love together. Even after her death he keeps writing the letters, the latest one being in the car with him. The story of Ira and Ruth parallels in some ways the story of Noah and Allie in "The Notebook".

Sophia Danko is a college student specialising in art history who is recovering from the breakdown of a relationship with Brian who has cheated her twice but still wants her back. She goes to a Cowboy style dance in a barn only to find Brian is still stalking her. She is rescued by Luke Collins, a competition bull rider who works on his mother's small ranch. On the face of it Luke and Sophia have little in common but slowly but surely a very special romance develops. The chances of their romance surviving after Sophia graduates look slim.

Nicholas Sparks is a consummate author of intelligent stories of personal relationships and romance. While I enjoyed this book at times the rides got a little too long. Warning: Sparks books are usually tearjerkers and this one is no exception.
