Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The third entry in Macomber’s best-selling Rose Harbor series finds innkeeper Jo Marie repeatedly telling her friends and neighbors that Mark is merely the inn’s handyman, and she’s not interested in him outside of how quickly he can put up a new gazebo. But she ends up thinking more and more about the reclusive man and eventually starts poking around in his past. Tensions rise when Mark discovers Jo Marie’s probing and doesn’t like it one bit. Meanwhile, new guests arrive at the inn, bringing their own troubled pasts along with them. Ellie is there to meet a man she only knows via Facebook, while Maggie and Roy have booked a weekend as a last-ditch effort to save their failing marriage. Loads of secrets abound, families are brought together while others are torn apart, and, of course, love conquers all in the end. As per usual, Macomber’s fans will be lining up to see what happens in this gentle and heartwarming read, and they won’t be disappointed. --Rebecca Vnuk

Review

“[Debbie] Macomber’s mastery of women’s fiction is evident in her latest. . . . [She] breathes life into each plotline, carefully intertwining her characters’ stories to ensure that none of them overshadow the others. Yet it is her ability to capture different facets of emotion which will entrance fans and newcomers alike.”Publishers Weekly

“Romance and a little mystery abound in this third installment of Macomber’s series set at Cedar Cove’s Rose Harbor Inn. . . . Readers of Robyn Carr and Sherryl Woods will enjoy Macomber’s latest, which will have them flipping pages until the end and eagerly anticipating the next installment.”Library Journal (starred review)

“Uplifting . . . a cliffhanger ending for Jo Marie begs for a swift resolution in the next book.”Kirkus Reviews

“Mending a broken heart is not always easy to do, but Macomber succeeds at this beautifully in Love Letters. . . . Quite simply, this is a refreshing take on most love stories—there are twists and turns in the plot that keep readers on their toes—and the author shares up slices of realism, allowing her audience to feel right at home as they follow a cast of familiar characters living in the small coastal town of Cedar Cove, where life is interesting, to say the least.”Bookreporter

Love Letters is another wonderful story in the Rose Harbor series. Genuine life struggles with heartwarming endings for the three couples in this book make it special. Readers won’t be able to get enough of Macomber’s gentle storytelling. Fans already know what a charming place Rose Harbor is and new readers will love discovering it as well.”RT Book Reviews (4-1/2 stars)

It’s summertime at the Rose Harbor Inn in Cedar Cove, Washington and Jo Marie Rose is getting ready for new visitors to her Bed and Breakfast. Jo Marie prides herself on taking care of her guests and wants her inn to be not just a nice place to stay, but a place of healing. She has her work cut out for her with hew newest guests as things aren’t going as expected for visitors Ellie Reynolds or Maggie and Roy Porter. Jo Marie is also questioning things in her own life as she realizes she really doesn’t know much about her friend and handyman Mark Taylor and takes steps to change that.

This book is the third installment in the Rose Harbor in series. It is set in Cedar Cove, Washington, but is an entirely separate series from the original Cedar Cove series. It’s not necessary to have read any of the books in the original series to enjoy this one. However, those who loved the original series will appreciate the cameos by some of the characters from that series such as Corrie McAfee and Peggy Beldon. Each book in the Rose Harbor series has a new set of guests with stories that begin and end within the book, so you don’t have to have read the others to enjoy this newest installment. However, Jo Marie’s story of dealing with the loss of her husband and her tentative friendship with handyman Mark does continue from book to book and will be understood a little more if you have read the prior books.

Jo Marie is a likeable main character who is healing from the loss of her husband and wants others to find healing and love in their lives as well. Her potential friendship and maybe more with Mark is interesting, but Jo Marie is much more patient that most people would be as Mark pushes her away the closer they get.

SPOILER INCLUDED: My rating on the Rose Harbor series has stayed consistently at 3 stars, and the third offering in the series is no exception. It is a sweet and predictable Debbie Macomber novel -- it has a 1950's feel brought into the 21st century with references to current technology and the wars in which we have been participating since 9/11. I do love the premise of a bed and breakfast run by a young, attractive widow who is slowing coming to accept the death of soldier husband and perhaps to start looking again for romantic love.

The biggest problem for me with the Rose Harbor series is the cast of secondary characters -- I just don't care for them, although the ones in "Love Letters" are not nearly as annoying as the ones in the second book of the series (if you too can't stand "cute" bickering couples of any age, young or elderly, steer clear of that one!). "Love Letters" is no exception --- I found myself skimming the chapters that had to do with the woman who came to Rose Harbor to meet a man she "met" on the Internet and a couple with a troubled marriage, to concentrate on the characters of Jo Marie Rose and handyman Mark Taylor. And they too can be annoying in their own way -- I am one of those readers waiting for these two to get together and stop their dance around each other, but Jo Marie is just so clueless at times that I have had to put the book down and wonder if she really is a 21st century woman.

Some people object to Jo Marie's story being told in first person and the alternating chapters on the guests being told in third person -- I like reading Jo Marie's first person narrative, as it makes her seem more authentic than the other characters. SPOILER: if you are hoping for a resolution to the Jo Marie and Mark budding romance in this book, it isn't happening, and you may find yourself as disappointed in the ending as did I. However, this is a series...so..

With the news reports constantly full of sorrowful and frightening events and television so full of sex and violence, every so often I need to read one of Debbie Macomber's novels. I only discovered this writer when I picked up the second book in this current series titled, "The Inn at Rose Harbour," but I had noted that she is a very popular author. I chose that book for a summer read a couple of years ago and enjoyed it so much I've been following Debbie ever since.

The premise for the series is that after less than a year of marriage, Jo Marie Rose lost the love of her life in a tragic accident in Afghanistan. To try to cure her heartbreak she decides to embark on a new life, using the insurance money to buy a Bed and Breakfast. She finds the perfect spot in the small town of Cedar Cove on the Kitsap Peninsula. The town seems to be modeled to some extent after the town of Port Orchard, Washington where Macomber actually lives.

Jo Marie soon loves her new home and the welcoming residents of the town. She makes some very good friends. When most of her guests arrive with profound problems of their own, Jo Marie throws herself into providing them with a happy sojourn, and in so doing, finds solace for herself.

Her books are not generally cliffhangers but you quickly find yourself rooting for her characters. Ms. Macomber's writing is lovely and descriptive. I found it easy to imagine myself in the setting. It's a soothing sort of read and I'm sure many people would find it enjoyable.

Since I was already familiar with the town and the protagonist, Jo Marie Rose, I was happy to see her coming to terms with her new life. Her B&B is in full swing and this book deals with two romances that need the encouragement that a stay at the Rose Inn seems to offer.
