About the Author
J.R. Ward is the author of over twenty previous novels, including those in her #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Black Dagger Brotherhood. There are more than 15 million copies of Wards novels in print worldwide and they have been published in 25 different countries around the world. She lives in the South with her family.
J.R. Ward is the number one New York Times bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series of vampire books. She is a winner of the prestigious Romance Writers of America RITA award for Best Paranormal Romance and is a multiple RITA nominee. A graduate of Smith College, she was a double major in History and Art History with a medieval concentration in both and she still longs at times for a return to those days sitting in dark lecture halls, looking at slides of old triptychs and reliquaries. Prior to becoming a full time writer, she was a corporate attorney, serving for many years as the Chief of Staff of one of Harvard Medical Schools premier teaching sites. Her idea of absolute heaven is a day filled with nothing but her computer, her dog and her coffee pot and the Brothers, of course.
Well…..as always, I wanted to love it as much as I did the first 5 books. Since John Matthews book, I grow more and more disappointed that the main characters are short changed. I had hoped Blay and Qhuinn’s story would be as strong as Z’s – alas, they were left with angry sex and a few paragraphs epiphany at a bar then bam HEA. No introspective into the family life that defined him. We didn’t even get to hear Qhuinn talking things out with his brother – what is that for another book? Now it is just too late.
The King was my last book of JR Ward. The writing has changed to a younger audience – no longer the smart sarcastic gangsta with a touch of animal. No V and Butch talking Red Sox, no Rhage playing great pranks. Beth in her needing and what happened in the house? When Bella was in her needing – every male had issues, but not one little mention here at all? No visit from her friends during her pregnancy? No Mary, Marissa, Layla? Not one ice cream moment? Sola and Assail? WE DON’T CARE! I skipped those chapters. Why introduce a book within a book? Rather than “fill” the page count with these newbies, why not expand on the stories of Wrath meeting his common peeps? Why not have an apple festival in the spring to celebrate what Wellsie started so long ago and have us see the connection forming between Wrath and his people? How about Wrath helping them by connecting single Mom’s and children to Marissa’s home for women? How about Saxon going on a first date? Why do V and Payne not even asked about their Mother? So much potential – so little achieved.
Where is the Scribe Virgin? Where is Muhrder? We suffered with his side story in Payne’s book to never hear from him again?Read more ›

I've never written a book review before and I felt I had to write one for The King, albeit with a heavy heart. I was so looking forward to this book, that I couldn't wait for my pre-order to arrive so I bought an extra copy as it was released earlier here in Australia. I should have saved my money. I was really hoping that the Warden would redeem herself with this one. With such a great opportunity to write about much loved characters this book could have been fantastic. The parts with Beth an Wrath were fantastic! After all it was supposed to be their book. The Shadows. I'm personally not interested in them, but they live in the mansion so I guess they fit. Xcor and Layla's bits were ok as they related with what was going on in the plotline. Assail and Sola. A total distraction. Irrelevant to the story and seemed to be used as a page filler, in order to bulk up the book to it's massive 570+ pages. I would have liked to see more drama and intrigue as the Glymera put it's plan into action and unfortunately, the scene where Rehv hands over the divorce documents didn't have the type of punch it should have. I thought Marissa's scene during a council meeting in Butch's book was much better. Hardly a peep from the Brothers.. I really miss the smart a$$ dialog. The Shellans it seems, hardly even warranted a mention. References to pop culture were also annoying. I mean really, Miley Cyrus and twerking?! What audience age is that targeting? Then there's product placement worthy of an infomercial.
To be perfectly honest I think the book nicely rounds out the series as a full circle conclusion to the Brothers' stories. It has a happy, neat ending. All ends well and Wrath is king for life.Read more ›

Review: 3.5 stars General: For those of you that know me you know I have a lot/hate relationship with this series. I either love the book from the biggest down to the smallest details or I find faults everywhere. For me the King was a good link book but I found myself completely and utterly annoyed at one of the main characters the entire time and found myself disconnected while reading those parts in the book. I know I'll receive a ton of hate on this one and I apologize but the goal is to be honest and share my opinion and I truly enjoyed the book, but it wasn't her strongest in my personal opinion.
This book does what most of her recent works do -- give 11+ people the chance to narrate. For me this is far to many. I understand setting up the next book in the series and I love seeing some of the side stories. But in this one there was : Beth and Wrath, Layla and Xcor, Sola and Assail, Qhuinn and B (a tiny bit), Selena and Trez as well as flashbacks to his parents. All in all it was too many stories and not enough attention went to the main story. That being said if it weren't for the Layla/Xcor and many of the Selena/Trez sections I wouldn't have finished this book because I wanted to slap Beth for the majority of it. The side stories were all extremely engaging don't get me wrong, but in a 534 page book when you're spending over 50% on other characters it seems to me the main characters weren't the right "set" to focus on.
Another issue was timeline. I've noticed a lot in the last 3 books (Payne's book, Tohr's book and Qhuinn's book) that intersecting timelines has become very popular. I love the way the books mesh up. However this one seemed to have some consistency issues.Read more ›
