Editorial Reviews

Review

“Details of smalltown New England life round out this powerfully successful homage.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“realistically quirky yet all too relatable characters, polished writing, tart humor, and an abundance of potent sexual chemistry. [...] another romance to treasure from one of the genre’s superstars, and proof positive that good things come to those readers who wait.” (Booklist (starred review))

“Heart-wrenching and uplifting, with witty dialogue, emotional depth, and details that give substance and texture to an already entertaining, engrossing story.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“In a stunning change of pace, Phillips reveals a brilliant flair for the gothic as she channels the Brontës, Daphne du Maurier, Victoria Holt, and Phyllis Whitney [...] An unforgettable, deliciously spicy romance that readers won’t want to put down.” (Library Journal (starred review))

About the Author

Susan Elizabeth Phillips has found fans all over the world with her warm and wonderful contemporary love stories that manage to touch both hearts and funny bones. She's the only four-time recipient of the Romance Writers of America's prestigious Favorite Book of the Year and was also honored with their Lifetime Achievement Award. A resident of the Chicago suburbs, she is a wife, the mother of two grown sons, an avid hiker, and—unlike some of her characters—notoriously inept at any sport requiring a ball.

I discovered SEP about a year ago and haven't stopped reading and/or listening to her books ever since. Her books are humorous, heartwarming and Oh SO fun. One can not listen to a Susan Elizabeth Phillips book without laughing out loud (always odd when your driving alone), shedding a few tears and rooting for the hero/heroine from beginning to end. Needless to say the narration of SEP's books by Anna Fields only adds to the overall experience and joy.
I look forward to reading SEP postings on Facebook and her website. I love that she shares her everyday joys, angst and life with Mr. Bill. When SEP announced her release of "Heroes are My Weakness" I pre-ordered my copy immediately on audible.com Last night I counted the minutes until midnight and as the clock struck 12 I had my download. Yippe, Yippe,Yea, Yea.
With high hopes and even higher expectations I began to listen; this is where it went south. The storyline is dark and humorless. Annie's fascination and her constant inner chatter with her "puppets" is kind of creepy. Between the puppets, the bunko club and the non endearing cast of characters I was distracted and lost interested quickly. With that said I am not ready to give up on this book…yet.
If you are new to SEP, the Chicago Stars series, Natural Born Charmer, First Lady and Fancy pants is the way to go. SEP I will always be a fan, this one just didn't do it for me.

I can't even finish this book. Really. SEP is one of my favorite authors. I look forward to her books like I look forward to hot fudge sundaes. But this story was melted low-fat frozen yogurt. Blech, no sweetness, no zip, mildly off-putting. Where are the likable/lovable characters? Where's the chemistry? Where's the HUMOR?? SEP seems to have lost her voice entirely. I can't believe it took her two years to write this draggy plot. An island off the coast of Maine in the dead of winter? Seriously? I've been to Maine in the winter and, believe me, there is no landscape less apt to inspire romantic fantasies; no slam against Maine, it's lovely, but not particularly the hotbed of romance. And ventriloquist's dummies? Ewww! Again, I've had some experience working around the national convention of ventriloquists and let's just say neither they nor their "puppets" inspire fantasies of romantic heroes and heroines. Annie's weird conversations with her puppets were mild compared to the people I've met, but creepy all the same. All I have to say is: Susan, what on God's green earth were you thinking?

Um...I can't believe I'm going to write an unflattering review for The Goddess SEP. But "Heroes Are My Weakness" just doesn't come close to making the cut.
Remember "Breathing Room?" That heroine was broke, too, and came looking - not for her "legacy" but for solace and restoration of spirit. She found both in a wonderfully wicked, sarcastic, BEAUTIFUL hero named Ren.
And "Ain't She Sweet?" There was something between Colin and Sugar Beth that is missing between Annie and Theo. Maybe because she kept on so long about his youthful misdeeds.
But in "Heroes," Theo doesn't have a sarcastic thing to say, and although he's sexy, he doesn't appear to be as sexy as either Ren or Colin; and Annie is, well, weird. Who can identify with her? Let me tell you, I LOVE puppets, but Annie's alter egos seem to make her less appealing, not more.
The grandmothers were another strange twist. They're cruel and hateful! What's that about? Even when they admitted their wrongdoing, it didn't endear them to me.
To say I'm disappointed is putting it mildly. I mean, as soon as a new book is announced, I order it and mark my calendar with reminders that it's coming six months in advance. But The Great Escape and Heroes were pretty much duds. So sad!!
Going back to The Stars doesn't seem like such a bad idea to me. Or - what's happening with Daisy and Alex? Or Ren and Isabel?

I just can't get past the puppets, and, so far, there's nothing particularly likeable about anyone at all. I'm not even halfway through and I'm finding it harder and harder to pick up again each evening. Usually I race through an SEP book all in one night, but I keep finding excuses not to go back to it.

Is it just me, or does that whole creepy puppet schtick come off as a bit too Chuckie for anyone else? Or Sybil? All the names and personalities, weird...creepy weird...just no.

Susan Elizabeth Phillips is a pillar of the romance genre. Her quirky, funny characters that often begin in a hate-hate relationship with one are unique. What I like best about Phillips books is the way that she brings two people together who have no business being in a relationship and then reveals how these two people are in fact perfect for one another. HEROES ARE MY WEAKNESS is my favorite book of Phillips’ since her Chicago Stars series with a quirky heroine, a brooding dangerous hero, gothic suspense tone, and puppets.

THE STORY: Annie, a thirty-three year old ventriloquist returns to Peregrine Island in Maine, the scene of the most frightening moment in her teens. She was tormented, attracted to, and almost killed by Theo Harp. Annie has returned to the island down on her luck after the death of her mother in order to find her promised inheritance. Annie has run out of options. She intends to spend two months on the island and decide what she is going to do for the rest of her life. When she arrives on the island she is “physically weak, emotionally empty, and more than a little terrified.” While Annie expects to have to confront the memories of her past, she doesn’t expect to confront the demon himself – Theo Harp.

Theo Harp is a dark, broody, mysterious and maybe deadly man. He is the author of a slasher/frightening novel (think Stephen King). He was the tormentor and almost lover of Annie when she was fifteen and she almost died as a result. Both his twin sister and his wife have died under mysterious circumstances. Annie believes Theo to be psychotic. Theo keeps his secrets and just wants to be left alone. He both attracts and repels but Annie sees him primarily through her experiences with him as a teenager.
