"I think everyone has secrets, sir, and a right to their own thoughts. It is human nature, I think." .. . . .. . . "Some secrets are like a noose. The more you resist, the more they strangle you." Secrets. Cecily Faire and Nathaniel Stanton both have them; the question is, will exposure become a gateway to freedom or a dark, dank prison of regret?

Beautiful Cecily Faire has been subject to cruel treatment from her father, banishment from her home and beloved sister, separation from her heart's young love, and now stands on the brink of a new life as a lady's companion after graduating from a reputable finishing school. Her arrival at Willowgrove Hall in the midst of a torrential storm places her directly in the path of Willowgrove's young steward, Nathaniel Stanton, when he stumbles upon Cecily valiantly struggling to walk to Willowgrove amidst the pouring rain. An overnight stay at the Stanton cottage forges a welcome friendship for Cecily between Mrs. Stanton and her three daughters. But when Cecily arrives at the grand Willowgrove estate on the following day, she is shocked to discover that her secret is still alive and well in the person of Mrs. Trent's(her new employer) nephew, Andrew Moreton.

Nathaniel Stanton's legacy was dramatically altered the day his father died. Now as his aging employer's health steadily declines, he cannot help but wonder what will happen when others begin to suspect what he already knows to be true. Nathaniel has no plans to become a family man until his inheritance is revealed, but he cannot help but be drawn to the sweet spirit of Cecily Faire and determines to help her find her sister in any way that he can, knowing that Mrs. Trent's bitterness towards him might very well taint Cecily's impression of him in the process.

This is a beautifully written story, the characters are easy to love, and Sarah Ladd fans might even declare this story to be their favorite!

Cecily Faire comes to Willowgrove Hall as a lady's companion, she has a troubled past, and secrets of her own to bring to Willowgrove Hall.
Nathaniel Stanton is the steward of Willowgrove Hall, and its surrounding grounds. He too has his secrets, and because of them, he has held back from forming romantic relationships.
As the secrets of Willowgrove Hall come to light will Cecily and Nathaniel be able to hold to the friendship that they have formed, as well as the promise of something more?

A wonderful book, with a great setting and characters. I loved Nathaniel's whole family, and how all three of his sisters were so welcoming to Cecily. I was surprised by how kind Mrs. Trent was to Cecily, and how accepting in general she was to everyone even her nephew who is just hanging about waiting to inherit the estate. Oddly enough, the only people Mrs. Trent doesn't like are the Stanton's, Nathaniel most especially.

Nathaniel was a great hero, honorable and responsible. I love how Cecily and Nathaniel's relationship developed naturally, and it was realistic for the time and setting. Another character that I liked was Clarkson, Mrs. Trent's Lady's Maid, she didn't say much, but she was observant, and made sure that Cecily had a safe place to go.

Overall, a great read, that was filled with drama, mystery, and romance. Definitely one I'd recommend!

Cecily Faire was sent to school at Rosemere College in disgrace by a furious father, for a reason she tries hard to keep to herself. Now that she's been offered the position of companion to an elderly gentlewoman, Mrs Tryst, she feels she has to guard her background more closely than ever before.

Nathaniel Stanton is the young, hardworking steward/bailiff of Willowgrove Hall. He's attracted to the new companion, although he knows it's no use because Mrs Tryst always turns her companions against him, for a reason he has no control over.

I love visiting the British Regency era in novels such as this, when social classes were so marked that a wealthy woman could afford to hire a companion just to have some company. Despite her formidable reputation, I found myself feeling a bit sorry for Mrs Tryst even before meeting her, as it seemed she was surrounded by young men just waiting for her to die so they could inherit their future estates. As for her gripe against Nathaniel..., well, although not fair, it's easy enough to understand.

This novel is written with such nice, detailed descriptions of buildings, rooms, gardens and landscapes, that I wouldn't be surprised if the author had some photos and other research to base them on. I enjoyed how she put us right in the picture, and I was a bit concerned about the future of beautiful Willowgrove Hall itself, at the finish.

Cecily is an exemplary heroine, except for one pivotal lack of judgment toward the end, which I suppose every heroine is entitled to. Basically, she decides not to give Nathaniel a chance to react however he might, fearing what he might say. Of course, her behaviour gives him another chance to shine, and heroes like Nathaniel are the reason why we ladies like to read these Regency romances after all.

Thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for my review copy.
