About the Author
Eileen Wilks is a USA Today bestselling author, a three-time RITA Award finalist, and the recipient of a Career Achievement Award from Romantic Times. One of the previous Novels of the Lupi, Blood Challenge, was a New York Times extended list bestseller.
Eileen Wilks was born in the dusty little town of Monahans, Texas to the usual number of parents. She's done a lot of wandering since then, having lived in Canada and Venezuela as well as twelve U.S. cities in five states. She wandered a lot professionally, too, before finding her home in writing. A three-time finalist (update: now a four-time finalist!) in RWA's prestigious RITA contest, she is the recipient of a Career Achievement Award from Romantic Times.
Lily and Rule are away on their honeymoon. This time, Kai's in the driver's seat. We get to learn a lot about the nature of magic and Faerie in this book. We also see intensely personal moments of the Queen of Winter. We see hard work and Kai takes us all the way through. I don't know if the ending is a happy one, but it's a fitting one. I love Nathan so much, and I was happy to see him at Clanhome. This book is full of the kind of storytelling that Eileen Wilks excels at. If you like the Lupi, you may enjoy seeing the Lupi from an outsider's perspective.

Blurb: In the newest Novel of the Lupi, the human and elven worlds are both about to come under attack…After questing through the sidhe realms with her ex-hellhound lover, Nathan, Kai Tallman Michalski has finally returned home. But she knows Nathan will eventually be called back to serve his queen—and Kai will have to decide whether to enter her majesty’s service as well. Sure, the job comes with great bennies, but there’s one big downside: she would have to swear absolute fealty to the Queen of Winter. For now, though, Kai is glad to be home, and glad that Nathan completed his mission for his queen with surprising ease. But what seemed to be a quick conclusion turns out to be anything but. The two of them helped thwart the sidhe god of chaos—and he is not happy about that. He’s got plans for them. Plans, too, for the sidhe who killed him some three millennia ago. Nor has he abandoned his plans for Earth, as they learn when chaos begins bursting out all over...
Thoughts: Unbinding is like a breath of fresh air to this floundering series....rather than relying solely Lily and Rule (who I have to say no longer really resemble the characters I feel in love with at the start of this series) and instead focus on new characters Kai and Nathan. This one is purported to be a "stand alone" title, and I do agree with that to a certain extent. Unbinding almost seems completely separate from the World of the Lupi series - it has a different feel to it and definitely shoves this series in a much needed change of direction.Read more ›

I love this series. Bear with me while I explain why. The first book was billed as a PNR about Lily and Rule. And I ALMOST didn't read it. Why? Because I was tired of the trend in PNR to replace real process of love, the type of love that takes time and empathy and friendship to develop, with 'mate bonds' that try to be a short cut. It never rings true to me and feels like ashes instead of joy. But the book didn't do that. Instead Eileen Wilks made sure to impress that the mate bond in this series was not love. It was a commitment and a bond, but not love. And I appreciated that, so I kept reading. And with each book the world and the bonds between the characters gets more sophisticated and the relationships between the characters get more complex. And the series has evolved into something else. Not PNR, but a complex urban fantasy, but not one that is always driven by the same characters, Lily and Rule, or even the same villain. Though they do drive the plot most of the time. This series is about the characters and the challenges they face. Internal and external.
And I'd forgotten that. And I'd also forgotten, despite having recently re-read the whole series in anticipation of this release, what a skillful storyteller Ms. Wilks is and that she succeeds where other authors do not even attempt.
When I first opened the book and the Prologue was from Kai's perspective I was unruffled. But when I got to the first chapter and realized the entire BOOK was going to be from Kai's perspective, I was honestly disappointed. And so while I read the book, I did so slowly and somewhat sullenly, wanting my normal narrator, Lily... or if not Lily then Cynna or Arjiene, both of whom have narrated in the past.Read more ›

The plot behind UNBINDING was a bit different, and didn't have quite the same feel to it as the rest of the books in the series, at least to me. But that could easily be explained away by my preference for the werewolf focused books. Sure, a lot of this takes place with wolves playing a large part in things, but they weren't the full focus. Even so, once I got over missing the wolf focus, I enjoyed the plot of this one. The chaos god sure made things interesting, and the intensity of everything kept me sucked in. At one point in the book where something major happens that's a game changer, well let's just say by that point I couldn't have put the book down even if I had wanted to. I just had to know how things were going to work out, and to me, that's a sign of a really great read.
I enjoyed seeing Kai grow in Unbinding. At the start she was stubborn, petulant, and more than a bit biased against the Elves. Frankly she did get on my nerves a bit at the start as she was just blindly negative against the Elves, and in turn the things they offered her. I guess I just found it a bit hypocritical as her lover, while not an Elf, was sworn to them, and hypocrisy is one of my pet peeves. Luckily that didn't hold me up too much as it didn't talk up too much of the page time, and she did grow over the course of the book, as her perceptions started to change. Another aspect she made large growth in was her self confidence. She started out the book not feeling like she was important nor was her magic really powerful or useful, but then as time went on, she started to see and understand her value. I just really enjoy seeing a character progress and grow as it makes it very easy to attach to them, which in turn makes for an even better read.Read more ›
