This was a great, well paced Sci Fi novel, with a perfect splash of romance. It's told through Rory, the main character's POV. Having survived a tragic event a few years prior, Rory is a strong, sarcastically independent character with one heck of a mind of her own. She has put up a wall though to avoid getting close to people, in fear that one day she'll lose them. The only person that she is close to is her professor, Dr. Zorba, an old family friend, who has helped her through some tough times. She is also his research assistant at the college she attends. The new fall semester at KIT has started and Rory finds herself reunited with the only friend she has, Benji. Benji is funny, smart, sweet, good looking, patient, and definitely swoon worthy. In fact, he is my favorite character in the novel. He has been following Rory since freshman orientation, and even though she doesn't put off the most friendliest of vibes, he never gives up on being friends with her. With extra study time, gym time, and eating out together, Rory begins to see that there is more to Benji than just his persistence at their friendship. She may even have feelings for him. However, could he have an ulterior motive to being her friend? Rory also notices Cy, tall, handsome, intelligent, and a bit odd, he's a new student from Egypt. Rory finds herself drawn to him. She also finds herself not liking him because he has gotten himself a position as Dr. Zorba's second research assistant. With the long work hours, Rory and Cy strike up a friendship. However, some strange things begin to happen; Dr. Zorba is overly obsessed with the specimen they are working on, Cy avoids answering any questions about himself, and Benji acts weird at times. It seems as if something out of this world is about to happen.Read more ›

There are so many things to love about this book, I wouldn’t even know where to begin. Rory has suffered through so much and believes that she is messed up and is unworthy of love. She her struggle to find understanding for her reason for surviving has made her somewhat reckless. And it is her search for her purpose meaning that has made her strong and independent.
In contrast to her, there is Benjie Reynolds. Benji has hunted Rory “like a bluetick coonhound” since her freshman orientation. He is hopeful, and actually a very sunny character, the exact opposite of Rory. Rory has always known that Benjie has crush on her and she refuses to give in. But Benjie is patient and understanding and he would take whatever Rory can give him. You can’t help but root for the guy. No matter what face Rory puts up, Benjie sees the beauty in her. Like a small ray of sunlight finding its way to the darkness through a small crack.
Finally, there is Cyrus or Cy. A handsome and mysterious young man who joins Rory as Dr. Zorba’s second research assistant. For some strange reason, Rory is drawn to him and she tries to make sense of her growing feelings for him and for Benjie.
When a group named the Majestic Twelve suddenly kidnaps Cyrus and takes the rock, Rory finds herself in the middle of a conspiracy without knowing who to trust. As Rory races to save Cyrus, she discovers the truth about her past and how the people around her are connected.
From here, you’d have to read on. Apolonia is such a well written piece of work, it would not do to ruin somebody’s first read of it. And even after that, I guarantee a re-read would still be a great adventure.Read more ›

I've never been a fan of paranormal or sci-fi novels. I have to be honest and say I went into this book with several reservations because it's not a genre I usually enjoy. Jamie McGuire wrote it so I had to read it because I figured if anyone could change my viewpoint on sci-fi it would be her. I was not disappointed! Matter of fact I was overwhelmingly surprised by how intrigued I was throughout the story and how invested I became in each of the characters. Yes, the sci-fi was there but beneath the surface there was so much more. The heroine was such a strong girl and her strength was portrayed so well yet Ms. McGuire still allowed us to feel Rory's pain and fear without weakening her. I loved that she was such a strong willed female character. I absolutely fell head over heels for Cy and Benji and OH MY GOODNESS there are some very steamy and sexy scenes woven into this action packed book as well.
I commend Ms. McGuire for stepping outside the box of the everyday NA story and writing something so very unique. It's refreshing to read something different and I am happy to say I was proved wrong in my initial thoughts about reading sci-fi. It was so much more than a story that fit nicely into a genre box. It was a love story that transcended the genre box and I am so glad I took a chance on it.
