Praise for Her Last Whisper “[Karen] Robards’s adept worldbuilding and the clock-ticking rescue arc aided by paranormal witnesses create a compelling read, while the cliffhanger ending will bring readers back for more. A tightly written ghostly romantic suspense novel with intriguing supernatural elements and sizzling sexual tension.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Robards does an outstanding job providing a mystery/thriller that is truly creepy and dangerous. Additionally, the unconventional romance between Charlie and sexy bad-boy Michael continues evolving—despite the living/dead gulf between them. Robards is truly a master storyteller who makes this atypical romantic suspense series really work!”—RT Book Reviews
Praise for Karen Robards “One of the most popular voices in women’s fiction.”—Newsweek “Draw a line between two extremely popular genres, mysteries and romance novels, and in the middle you will find the bestselling Robards. She merges the two worlds like no one else, deftly interlacing plot and passion.”—Albany Times Union
About the Author
Karen Robards is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of forty-three books and one novella. The mother of three boys, she lives in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.
I keep waffling between a 4 and 5 for this one. My gut and my infatuation for Garland keeps screaming 5, yet certain aspects of the book keep saying 4. We'll call it a draw and go with a 4.5, rounded up.
I've adored this series from the beginning; seemingly sound-of-mind Dr. Charlotte Stone finds herself romantically entangled with a ghost. Not just any ghost, mind you. The ghost of one Michael Allen Garland, inmate of Wallens Ridge State Prison until his untimely death inside the prison walls. Charlie is a psychiatrist who works inside the prison in order to gain a fuller understanding of serial killers and what makes them tick. Michael Garland was her patient inside the prison and yes, he was in prison because he was charged as being a serial killer. Fortunately (or unfortuately, depends on how you see it), she is also able to see him after his death, where he becomes her new, invisible sidekick.
What I've loved about this series from the start is the attraction Charlie and Michael have for one another, and the fact that the pairing is between two people who exist on different planes. That's quite a unique spin and despite the seemingly odd pairing, it works for me. Regardless of Garland's past and his conviction as being a murderer, Charlie knows deep inside it wasn't him. Garland is not a forthcoming fellow; he doesn't reveal much, if anything, about his conviction. She is still hell-bent on getting the truth of the his past revealed, yet Garland being Garland only offers tidbits of useless information. Both of these elements really add so much to this series, yet the latter is rather frustrating at times.Read more ›

Having never read this author before, I was unsure what to expect...especially since the story involved a ghost. While I do read some paranormal fiction, I usually avoid ghost stories. I won't be avoiding ghost stories any longer. Even though this book is the third in this series, and I haven't read the other two, I was totally sucked in from the very first page! I didn't feel lost and was easily able to get up to speed on the storyline and characters.
About that ghost, Michael was unbelievably sexy and one of the most appealing heroes I've read in a long time. He had that alpha personality but with a great sarcastic sense of humor. I loved the passion and connection between Michael and Charlie. Charlie was totally in love with him, but she fought it throughout the book until the end. Tony was also a great leading man. He was in charge but always kind and dependable. He would not be a bad choice for Charlie if she weren't so in love with a ghost.
This story had plenty of suspense and creepy occurrences as the team races to save their teammate's sister. The secondary characters were interesting and likable. The plot was very believable in a paranormal sort of way. I totally loved it and stayed up late to finish it the same day I started it. I will absolutely be reading more of this series, especially after that sneaky ending which left me dying for another.
You should absolutely check out this series. I received an advance copy of this book from Net Galley and loved it!

This is the third book in the Dr. Charlotte Stone series, and I have to say that the initial surprise at what a unique series this is, has yet to wear off. Combining equal parts of paranormal, mystery, thriller, humor, romance and passion, the Dr. Charlotte Stone is one of the most well rounded series, I have ever read! Moreover, Her Last Whisper is sure to keep you constantly entertained with its two mysteries and two love stories.
Although it is possible to read this book as a standalone, as the immediate mystery, the identification and tracking down of the "Cinderella" serial killer is resolved, I would recommend that you read it in order. Not only does the love life of the heroine evolve over the series, but there is also an underlying mystery over whether Michael Garland, a convicted serial killer and now Dr. Charlotte Stone's ghost lover, actually committed the horrendous crimes he was convicted of which also is slowly solved over the entire series. Her Last Whisper ends in one big cliffhanger, so there will definitely be at least one other book. As of the time of this review, however, I could not find any information on when it is expected to be released, so now I'm sitting on pins and needles! This series is that good!
Dr. Charlotte Stone, once targeted by the depraved "Boardwalk" serial killer who killed Charlie's best friend and her family, is no longer a victim. Instead, she became a psychiatrist who researches serial killers and now she is the hunter who hunts down these madmen. The fact that she has a gift, which allows her to communicate with the newly dead, particularly those who have experienced violent deaths, only makes her even more suited to help protect society from their deviant behavior.Read more ›
