“A Matter of Heart” by Tracie Peterson takes us back to Texas for Jessica’s story. Jessica Atherton is the spoiled daughter of a wealthy rancher. She was heartbroken when the man she thought she would marry fell in love with someone else. When she overhears several people talking about her she decides it is time to change from her selfish ways. She sets out to make amends with those she hurt and hopes to find true love. She meets two men and they quickly catch her attention. Harrison Gable is a successful smooth talking lawyer. He decides that Jessica is the woman he will marry and he will not let anything stand in his way. The other man is Texas Ranger Austin Todd. Austin is a cattle inspector and spends a lot of time with Jessica’s family. Austin has lost all of his family and feels like it is his fault. He does not believe that he is worthy of Jessica’s love but the more time he is with her the more he falls for her. Jessica turns to God to help her become a better person and to guide her to the right man He has in mind for her.

This is another wonderful book by Tracie Peterson. She has a way with writing a story that will draw the reader in and make them feel like they are a part of the story. When we first met Jessica in “A Moment in Time” I did not like her but in this book we see how she grows from the selfish spoiled girl she was to a godly Christian woman. We also see how Austin changes from a bitter man to one filled with hope after he turns to God to help him forgive himself. This is the third book in the Lone Star Brides trilogy and I highly recommend reading “A Sensible Arrangement” and “A Moment in Time” first in order to know what is going on throughout this book. I also recommend reading the Land of the Lone Star trilogy since that’s where most of the characters in this trilogy were first introduced. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Bethany House Publishers.

The third book in Peterson’s Lone Star Brides series focuses on two characters we’ve previously met. Jessica is the spoiled heiress who wanted to marry well. Her original choice of husband didn’t share her big city dreams and married someone who would share his love of ranching. Jessica couldn’t understand his decision, especially since she considered his bride beneath her in so many ways. Now, however, she’s beginning to rethink her attitudes, especially since many of her friends are married with children. Austin, meanwhile, is the somewhat reclusive cattle inspector. He knows the local families, but rarely socializes with them. He still hurts from events several years previously. Both have issues with self-esteem which they learn to overcome during the course of the book.

Early on, I realized I recognized Jessica’s parents. Tyler and Carissa Atherton featured in Turning the Wind, from the Land of the Lonestar Series. Lone Star Brides covers the next generation of families included in that earlier post-war series, which is a nice touch. I like generational sagas – the characters start to feel like old friends – and I’d be interested to read about the generation after this, but I doubt Peterson will continue into the 20th century as she rarely ventures into that era of history.

I don’t need to tell you how A Matter of Heart ends. We always get the happy ending. What interested me was the counterfeiting thread which began in A Sensible Arrangement. The case comes to a head when Austin takes it on, and there’s a twist to it I hadn’t expected. Peterson’s main focus is the romance, but I think the mystery would’ve made a great standalone historical thriller.

The next Tracie Peterson series will begin in early 2014. Look for Steadfast Heart in January.

Thank you to Bethany House for my complimentary copy of A Matter of Heart, which I received in exchange for an honest review.

Jessica hasn't been a very nice person. It's something she's determined to change, but everyone seems to delight in reminding her what she was. Even though she's trying, it feels like no one understands. Until she talks to Austin. He seems to understand her in a way no one else can.

Austin has a tragic past and has vowed to never let anyone get close to him again. It hurts too much. His heart is drawn to Jessica and soon overrides his head. With another suitor in the picture, does he even stand a chance?

This was a really good book. I really liked Austin's character. It was hard NOT to sympathize with the man once you realize all he's gone through. Jessica earns some of my pity as well. She honestly tries to prove she's changed, but most people are determined to think the worst of her.

This series has a continuous story line in it that is resolved in this book. It involves the counterfeiting mystery. Since I haven't had the chance to read the first book, I can't say for certain that it starts in that one, but I'd guess it does.

Technically, you can read this book by itself, but you're going to get a more complete story (and a more satisfactory one) reading them all and reading them in order. The first book, A Sensible Arrangement, seems to be the story of Jake and Marty. The second book, A Moment in Time, is more of Jake and Marty's story but mainly Alice and Robert's. This final book is mainly about Jessica and Austin, but the mystery involving the counterfeiting is a pretty major theme. I'd recommend reading them in order.
