A disappointing outcome for an highly anticipated new book for this beloved series. I have loved the Wherlockes saga since it began and was quite excited for this next installment. It is a major disappointment. (Spoiler alert!) The plot is trite; the damsel loses her young son to the evil brother-in-law, a chase ensues, hero and heroine meet, some twists and turns (all of which are boring, uninspired and pretty nondescript) and then "finally" love conquers all. There is no richness to this book. The characters are just that ....not real people. We rarely meet the villain and he gets no true comeuppance. In her previous books, Hannah Howell is able to make her protagonists and evil-doers come alive with distinct personalities, Wherlocke/Vaughn "powers", as well as rich plots that are enhanced by the people who inhabit this special world of pre-Regency London. This book just fell very, very short. For example - the opening has the carriage of Sir Orion Wherlocke stolen yet once (Third or is it the fourth time?) It should be a great opportunity to introduce our hero, his quirks, his temperament, his charm -- it is a ridiculous and potential rollicking occurrence). But nothing develops. A major flaw seems to be that Orion and Catryn rarely inhabit the same space. I don't see why they fell in love. One telling note -- the plot is so slow and is such an internal monologue. HH seems to have to explain everything in a ponderous manner. Orion has to explain his actions to himself and the reader. Then Cate has to do the same thing. Again and again. And as to the clouded parentage of Cat's son -- all I will say is YUCK!! Poorly handled and almost a "throw-away", unsatisfying conclusion. HH needed to set up a better storyline -- why didn't she use Orion's powers of Tracking as a major plot device?Read more ›

This is a lively, different and satisfying read, with a touch of the supernatural.
Definitely not your normal Stuart period historical romance.
Fate kindly takes a hand when Lady Catryn Gryffin de Warrene, displaying the termagite tendencies only a mother fearing for her child's safety employs, takes unusual steps to pursue her son's kidnapper
Sir Orion Wherlocke was kind enough to leave his carriage ready for the purpose of pursuit. Though to be fair, he was inside his mansion at the time contemplating another sort of pursuit, of the charming widow variety.
Unfortunately Catryn did not know that Orion's son Giles was inside the carriage when she hijacked it.
So a long list of people all pursing each other begins this rather startling adventure.
There is something otherworldly about Catryn and her son Alwyn. Catryn has strong premonitions. Alwyn sees dead spirits.
Howell's well placed humour blends gratifying characters and a rollicking, adventurous storyline. Her sly sense of the comic adds immensely to the various situations our heroes find themselves in.
Catryn is strong, determined and ready to brave all for her son.
Orion is capable, slightly detached and ruthless when necessary, especially where his family is involved.
Two such strong forces are bound to ignite strong passions when they meet, like colliding stars they are incandescent.
As the story progresses deeper darker mysteries are unravelled, involving sibling rivalries and a renegade Wherlocke cousin.
Catryn discovers answers to many questions she has occasionally puzzled about.
The Wherlocke children are delightfully entertaining with their quaint mix of squabbling and the serious discussions.
I enjoyed Howell's writing immensely and have put her on my 'must read more of' watch list.

Sorry to have finished my last story of the Wherlocke & Vaughn families. All six books were very enjoyable, good love stories with little female "mishishness". Intrigues and the stories and the characters were all a delight. Villains were villainous; the good people were good, kind, sexy, and heroic. Hope for more. The hermit Duke would be a good character to bring out.

Howell is vividly in your face from the first page of this novel. You can’t escape her upbeat writing or her captivating storytelling. Readers are drawn into the intricate world that she has crafted. Reality and fantasy merge in this one of a kind story. Howell captured my imagination and my heart throughout, making the story easy to follow and to picture.

The main characters in this novel are very easy to get to know and like. I thoroughly enjoyed Howell’s gradual character development throughout. It was also nice to see the characters getting to know more of themselves and what they are capable of throughout their adventures. The fact that much of the supporting cast in this novel was children added another unique element to the story. The full cast was remarkable, filling out the story perfectly.

This is definitely one of those series that you should read in sequence for context, otherwise you start the story in the middle of an ongoing conflict. At the same time, this story could be read on its own and still be very enjoyable in and of itself.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.
