Swan Point is the newest novel in the Sweet Magnolias series by Sherryl Woods. I have read a few of her books, but this is my first taste of the Sweet Magnolias series.

The story centers about Adelia who is newly divorced and the mother of four children. She left her cheating husband and is starting over again in a house of her own. Gabe is back in town to help out his cousin with his construction business. He left Serenity years ago after he was dubbed a troublemaker. He was tired of being part of the town’s gossip chain and having to defend his mother who was known for all the men she “entertained.” Adelia and Gabe see each other in Serenity’s pizza shop and it seems like love at first sight. Gabe’s boss and cousin, puts him in charge of Adelia fixing up her newly acquired house and the attraction between the two is apparent. Gabe is kind and loving to her children (something her ex-husband was not) and the two begin to believe that this relationship could lead to something bigger. Gabe, however, is scared because he hates how small and gossipy Serenity is and he likes to move around a lot and not grow roots anywhere. He is upfront with Adelia about who he is and what he does and she is very hesitate to let him into her life and her children’s life if he is planning on moving away from Serenity. In the end, Adelia and Gabe come to their senses and realize what they both want.

In case this is on your “To Be Read” list, I don’t want to ruin the ending. It took me a while to get through this book, to the point that I put it down and read and finished another book. The story I felt was drawn out more than it had to be.

Swan Point is a Sweet Magnolia novel by Sheryl Woods. It is set in Serenity, South Carolina. Adelia Hernandez bought a home in the Swan Point neighborhood. It is an older home and needs a lot of fixing up.
Adelia Hernandez moves herself and her four children into the home in Swan Point. She knows it needs some fixing up and she may need to get into her savings to get all of it finished. However, she feels this home is where she and her four children can make a new start after her divorce from her cheating husband. The children are subdued after the divorce and she hopes this move will help them start anew. The three little ones don’t know all the details of the divorce so it is hard for them to understand. The eldest daughter, Selena, knows all about her father’s cheating as he introduced her to his mistress one day. She is quite angry at everyone. She does understand why her Mom left but not why her Mom didn’t leave him earlier. Luckily, school is still in session and Adelia has a good job at a boutique in town, Chic, and has her mother for backup babysitting.
Greg Franklin has returned to Serenity. He left years ago under the title of “troublemaker” and after his Mom died. His Mom was the town slut and he heard about it a lot through gossip. His answer was to avenge her by fighting. Luckily his anger didn’t get him into very serious trouble before he left. Now he has returned after much counseling to make up for his youthful mistakes. He works in construction with his cousin Mitch. He plans to stay for a while and then leave.
Serenity is known for its accurate gossip which can hurt people but it is intended to assuage curiosity and maybe help others. To Greg, it is distasteful and he has already been the victim of the gossip.

I always enjoy visiting Serenity, South Carolina, and hanging out with the Sweet Magnolias. They make a mean margarita, but that's not what attracts me. What I really love is how these women look out for each other -- and their husbands do the same. And they're always willing to widen the circle to encompass one more friend.

"Wait," you're saying, "I thought this was a romance!" You're right, it is. And the focus is certainly on Adelia and Gabe and the attraction slowly simmering between them. But Sherryl Woods's romances almost never take place in a vacuum. When things get tough, within the relationship or from outside it, the heroine and hero don't have to struggle with it on their own. If you're in a new romance in Serenity, the Sweet Magnolias will have your back. They'll gather you up for a margarita night, and before you know it, you're spilling out your fears or pain to a circle of women who know how to listen - and when to ask the right questions. If the relationship is falling apart, they'll hold you up. If you're letting your fears get in the way, they'll make sure you know it, and push you to decide what you really want.

It was fun to watch Adelia and Gabe's relationship grow in the midst of this combination of support and well-intentioned meddling. The gossip that springs up in the town about their relationship poses some problems for both of them. For Gabe it brings up bad memories of his growing-up years in Serenity. For Adelia, it complicates her relationship with her sisters and her vindictive ex-husband. She's also afraid of letting her kids get attached to someone who, by his own admission, isn't a long-term kind of guy -- though Gabe is terrific with her children, to his own surprise.
