At the end of each of her books I feel I have been informed about a different topic and her characters are always well-rounded.

Jojo Moyes has produced a superb piece of modern fiction in Silver Bay. Set mostly in Australia, with some action taking place in London, UK, the story deals with the effects of threatened development on the tranquil eponymous location of the title. But it is the relationships and interactions of the protagonists that drive this story of tragedy, romance, coming of age and redemption.

Presented in 3 parts, with a short prologue and epilogue, Jojo uses first person narration by five of the major characters, four female and one male, to explore emotional, motivational, mental and spiritual aspects of her protagonists. Her research has clearly been thorough and the novel displays the author's deep knowledge of the subjects she uses for theme and background. The book starts slowly but builds relentlessly until the denouement is reached in a way unflagged and unexpected.

This was a book I would have read at one sitting, had I been able. As it is, my life being a little hectic at present, I was obliged to fit in reading between many other commitments. It's testament to the quality of the writing and storytelling that I found myself looking forward to my occasional bus journeys, as they are opportunities to read. Normally I dislike this necessary part of my working day, but I was eager to get on that bus and have the chance to read. In fact, had I not finished the book shortly before the end of my journey, I suspect I'd have missed my stop.

Jojo has drawn her characters with skill, care, and love. This is appropriate, since the love stories that run through the narrative form a major thread of the tale. Each passage is in the voice of the chosen character and the author manages to make each unique and totally credible.

Another absolute must read by Jojo Moyes, author of ME BEFORE YOU and many other excellent novels.

From the moment you begin this novel, the multiple characters narrating SILVER BAY will pull you into their story and keep you guessing. They'll fill your mind with images of Silver Bay, they'll teach you that people can be transformed, and they'll make you long for an Australian vacation to watch the magnificent whales and dolphins in the secluded bay with a rundown hotel. You may even be able to get a taste of an ice-cold beer and smell the salty air.

This is so much more than a love story. There are multi-dementions and angles to the story. There are multi-generations that give their perspectives, each one adding their pieces to the whole for a richer, more interesting tale.

I can't even begin to sing the praises of Jojo Moyes and her incredible storytelling talent. It's bloody brilliant. Prepare to have a few kleenexes on hand. Prepare to fall in love with Mike and Liza, and Aunt Kathleen and Nino, and even the dog Milly. Most of all, eleven-year-old Hannah will grab ahold of your heart and keep you wondering about her life, not as it is now, but what it will be ten years from now. If you're like me, you'll want to think about her and her family and friends and Silver Bay and the future.

There is NOTHING Jojo Moyes writes that I can't or won't rave about to anyone who'll listen. You might as well put all her books on your to-read list, that is, if you haven't done so already!

For me Silver Bay was a book I needed to read in long sittings. I started reading at the tail end of last week and was only able to enjoy a chapter here and there. I was not immediately drawn in. I knew something was up with Liza and I needed to know what that something was but it was talking too long to get there. It wasn’t until Sunday when I had a real chance to sit and read without interruption. I got about half way through and knew I had to finish reading that night. Which I did!

I thought Liza’s daughter Hannah was adorable, and I was rooting for her to be given the freedom she deserved. But then I found out why Liza needed to protect her and I was just in awe at how this little girl seemed relatively unaffected by what happened, at least on the outside. I felt little empathy for Mike Dormer, I mean he catapulted himself right into the middle of what was right and what was wrong. He needed to fix his mistakes and keep this family safe.

I thought Silver Bay was a beautiful location for the story. Although a fictional place I am told that there are many places just like that in Australia. I really enjoyed reading about the whale migration and how the local residents would do anything to protect them and to keep them coming back after hundreds of years.

I shed a few tears at the end when all the loose ends in the story were tied up.

I would’ve liked to read more about some of the secondary characters, specifically some of the other whale watchers. Like how they ended up in Silver Bay, and their thoughts about the potential resort being built. This stuff didn’t just affect Liza and her family, but also the community.

I received a copy of this book free of charge from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

I normally like Jo Jo's books, but this didn't cover my expectations. The end was very foreseable, the story was good, but it jumped around from character to character too often and there was no real engagement with any of them.
