Nora Roberts (and her alter ego J.D. Robb) are auto-buys for me, but she isn't always on top of her game, and here she bobbles the ball. From the very first pages, I was disappointed. First - though this would probably be the least of the problems for the average reader - there wasn't enough editing. I've noticed this over the past couple of years, and it may be due to churning out too many books on schedule. Ms. Roberts claims to write all her own books. Now consider that she produces two mysteries, one romantic suspense, and at least one novella each year. That's a pretty tight schedule and doesn't leave much room for the edits and rewrites that books are subject to. In this book, it's noticeable that "filler" words are used multiple times in a paragraph, and descriptive passages seem retreads from previous books. Second, the setting and some plot points are definitely reruns. Old family house on a hill/bluff/cliff overlooking the water? Try her MacGregor series, Calhoun series, Three Sisters Island series. Old family house with a secret treasure? Yup, back to the Calhoun series. Third, how about the characters? Abra is one of the author's stock types, an all-competent, nurturing free spirit. She's a yoga instructor, a housekeeper, a good cook, a shoulder to lean on. The wounded hero? Eli is rather weaker than most, and the interaction between him and Abra is more therapeutic than romantic. The ending is strangely flat and some of it is frankly unbelievable. There is little real suspense. I love romantic suspense, but I need at least one strong ingredient. Since the suspense is watered down and the romance is lacking, I found this an unsatisfying book. Her previous book, "The Witness", had some similar problems but was more engaging overall. "Whiskey Beach" is a disappointment. I hope this isn't a trend. I would rather have one wonderful book by Ms. Roberts in a year than several mediocre novels.

I'm a huge Nora Roberts fan, but I just stopped reading after 50 pages. It was boring - Eli moping, Eli shoveling snow, Eli making breakfast, I think you get the picture. And Abra - just annoying. Small wonder there was no chemistry! And where did that name come from? But I'll still read her books, hope this is a fluke.

I never write reviews. And, I love Nora Roberts (one of my favorite authors). Yet, I have to say this book - in one word is - Disappointing. Was the problem with the writing or editing? It was honestly like reading someone trying to write 'like' the author, yet not quite getting it. And parts that needed cutting just go on for pages. Her normal great scene setting is evident at the start. And then? It doesn't stop - for pages! The whole thing is choppy...a nice read interrupted by excesses, dry spells and redundancy.
I enjoyed the main characters and the premise of the story, up to a point. [Spoiler Alert] The "what other 10 jobs can she do" for the female lead started getting into farce (searching around for the fantasy job the reader would like, instead of conveying her actually over-coming past tragedy with a positive outlook). In addition, most of the secondary characters were not developed well and were a little flat. It would have been nice to have them actually `do something'. In saying that, others were great and should have had more room to breath.
I skimmed a couple other reviews and wondered...is it just me?! Character motivations and "Who Done It" were obvious really early (and a little torturous getting to the reveals - I kept hoping for more interesting turns). I will say it again, "Whisky Beach" is a novel that somehow feels like it was ghost written for Nora Roberts (it's not quite her voice).

I'm a big fan of Nora Roberts. And usually, even if the story line falls short of the mark, she redeems herself in vivid descriptions that can transport you to the world of the book. Not so this time. The characters were depressing - and straight out of the NR vault. I found it hard to get into because the hero was weak, self-absorbed and emotionally closed off - issues that were never sufficiently resolved. The heroine was downplayed, and her role seemed to focus solely on taking care of and catering to the hero, self-sacrificing to the point of turning herself into a total door mat. If you are looking for 'love's redeeming power,' don't pick this one up.

As many of the other reviewers pointed out, this book feels overly familiar... the writing and rhythms of the main characters kept reminding me of her previous characters like Roz in Black Rose and Mac in Vision in White. It's also as if she thought using superfluous descriptions would cover up the fact there there was no substance to the story or the characters. Eli and Abra were both so boring and had no spark or chemistry, wither separately or together. For a romantic suspense, there was very little of either.
It seems like Nora Roberts hasn't evolved her writing style and it feels stale to me - especially in comparison with all of the new up-and-coming romance authors. Or maybe she's just out of fresh ideas. And her prices are too expensive for repetitive story lines and books I can't finish.

i was surprised that so many people liked this book. there were no sparks or friction between the main characters. abra was SO nice and almost too good to be true. i usually love nora robert's books and read them several times but i was a little bored by this story and wont read this book again.
