From the Back Cover

Beloved Author Lauraine Snelling Returns Again to Her Popular Red River Valley Setting

Trygve Knutson is devoted to his family and his community. With his job on the construction crew, he is helping to build a future for the North Dakota town of Blessing. Though he loves his home, he sometimes dreams of other horizons--especially since meeting Miriam Hastings.

Miriam is in Blessing to get practical training to become an accredited nurse. She's been promised a position in the Chicago women's hospital that will enable her to support her siblings and her ailing mother. Although eager to return to her family, Miriam is surprised to find how much she enjoys the small town of Blessing. And her growing attachment to Trygve soon has her questioning a future she always considered set in stone.

When a family emergency calls Miriam home sooner than planned, will she find a way to return? If not, will it mean losing Trygve--and her chance at love--for good?

"Snelling writes with her trademark richness, and her upright characters, intriguing stories, and vivid settings create a blissfully immersive reading experience. . . . This symphony of
immigrant farm-town life in upper Midwest is so masterfully directed by Snelling, readers will be eager for the next novel about the good people of Blessing." -Booklist

"Fans of the author will enjoy getting to know the secondary characters who are as well developed as the protagonists. A sweet story for fans of Kim Vogel Sawyer and Tracie Peterson." --Library Journal

I waited so long for the latest in the Bjorkland family saga and I was not disappointed. Ms. Snelling weaves past and present seamlessly. You can catch up easily with all of your favorite characters and you know who has married, who has had children, what they are working at etc. The only part of the book I didn't like was her having Elizabeth become pregnant again. I just don't feel another long agonizing pregnancy and loss of a baby for Elizabeth and Thorliff will serve any real storyline purpose. One character died and even that was beautifully done. I at least really love the characters and can't wait until the next book in March. I'm sure Miriam and Trygve will marry but how it will come about will be interesting to see.

What a gorgeous cover. :}

Lauraine Snelling has a much slower style of writing than I prefer and it was hard for me to enjoy the moment by moment descriptions of the characters daily lives- I'm sure that it's refreshing and calming to some readers, but I got pretty bored. It was kind of strange to me that the hero wasn't even mentioned until chapter 5, and the heroine not until chapter 16...Haha
To Everything a Season was super clean, and there were parts that made me smile, but overall it just wasn't my style.

The only truly negative thing here (besides my writing preferences) would be that the author seems to be introducing a multi-religion mindset, and characters that are lukewarm and negatively neutral. Again- that's just not what I like in my books.

I've heard good things about some of this authors earlier works, so perhaps sometime when I need a low key read I'll give one of those a try. :)

Lauraine Snelling was one of my favorite authors, but this book has changed my mind. There was once a tv show with a Christian feel to it, called Seventh Heaven. It was basically a soap opera, revolving around one family and the daily dramas. Lauraine has written a number of series of books that all revolve around the Bjorkland family. The Red River of the North Series, Red River Valley Series, and Home to Blessing series. I've read a number of Lauraine's books and thoroughly enjoyed them, and that's not to say I didn't like this one, but I feel mislead.

I think is the second book I have read by Lauraine so I really wasn't sure what to expect. I was excited because this is the first book in a new series so I figured it would be a good place to start. Sadly, I was very disappointed. This book reads like the middle of a series, I knew none of the characters and there was a ton of backstory that seemed important that I didn't know.

Also, the entire plot on the back of the book says this story is about Miriam, this is not the case. She doesn't even enter the picture until half way through the book. The first part of the book jumps from previous series characters until the middle when Miriam makes an entrance. At that point I was really not into the story. It's very slow and I really couldn't connect with the characters. I think this book could have been way better organized and should be part of another series, not promoted as the start of a new one.

If you are a fan of Lauraine already, I'm sure you will enjoy this book.

I wish I could give a better review but I was disappointed and I'm being honest.

Two and a half stars.

I really want to give it a 3.5 stars. I do like it but there are some quirks. Lets start with the good. I've never read a book by Lauraine Snelling and she's a great writer. She brings out each of the characters' personality perfectly. I can imagine how each character will react and for some, (at least in this book), the imagery of what the person looks like also if well written for a visual person like myself. The plot was smooth. I did not find the urge to skim through boring parts, because I find each part well written and vital to the story. This is a faith based book, and as long as the author demonstrated what that means (without just throwing in bible verses straight out of the Bible), then I think it was a success. Ms. Snelling gave us, readers a capture of life and what that entails. I believe if you're interested in these types of books, you will enjoy the journey with the characters of this book.

Now the quirks: This is Book 1 of the Song of Blessings series, however, it reads like anything BUT a book 1 of any series. It felt like a random selection of a part of a book without giving care to where it began and where it ends. There's more to the series, at least more background, and you'll have to read Ms. Snelling's previous books to get the answers. And to me, that doesn't help with the current book. A book is a book. It needs closure and an informative start. This book is a good story, but it lacks a clean start or finish. Also, if you purchase or thinking of purchasing this book solely from the synopsis of Trygve and Miriam, well, their story doesn't really start until the latter half of the book. And I surmise it will be another book, book 2 or 3 perhaps that will finish their story.
