Editorial Reviews

Review

“Heather Burch has proven herself to have such an exceptional storytelling range that one might be tempted to call her ‘the Mariah Carey of romance fiction.’ One Lavender Ribbon blew my expectations out of the water and then swept me away on a wave of sweet romance. Don't miss this one.” —Serena Chase, contributor to USA Today's Happy Ever After blog and author of The Seahorse Legacy

“Burch’s latest combines a sweet, nostalgic, poignant tale of a true love of the past with the discovery of true love in the present...Burch’s lyrical, contemporary storytelling, down-to-earth characters, and intricate plot make this one story that will delight the heart.” —RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars

This was far, far better than I expected it to be. It was a free Kindle First book, and generally I haven't had much luck with Kindle Firsts being very good quality literature. And usually I hate modern romance because it's all about sex.

This book is an outstanding modern romance which is both good literature and good romance.

First off: There's no swearing or vulgarity in this book, which I found hugely refreshing. Second: the characters are actually believable. They're flawed and not perfect. They make mistakes, but they're not train wrecks who get on my nerves because they repeatedly make stupid decisions. Third: the guy and the girl are REAL PEOPLE. Yes, the girl is pretty, but the author doesn't repeatedly throw it in our faces how godlike and chiseled the man is, or how the girl is drop-dead gorgeous and has perfect hair, lips, smile, laugh, etc. The author gives a good, basic description of the characters and then leaves the rest up to your imagination. Fourth: the guy and the girl are attracted to each other, but there are no sex scenes or risqué passages. This book is really very clean, and I would let my teenagers read it.

And the main point in favor of this book: IT HAS A PLOT. And a very good plot at that. The author mixes up some likable characters, some history, some romance, some hurt and heartache which is very relatable, and spins a very, very good tale. I actually teared up towards the end, which I rarely do.

This is the first book which I got as a free Kindle First which will not be erased from my Kindle, and which I read all the way through because it was worth it!

This book is incredible and that is not something I say often in a review I write. It shows us that true love never dies even when apart for decades. There is the reminders of paying it forward and even going beyond that. Then there is taking chances because while the odds might seem insurmountable, it can be a great reward in the end beyond what money can buy.

Will was a by-the-book, organized man who cringed when things were not going a certain way, especially if it is outside the black & white box he has around him. This means he hates surprises and thought that if he controlled the environment around his grandfather then he would be there forever and ever, especially since he felt his parents had just abandoned him years earlier. But then Adrienne arrived in town when she bought a house with the money from her divorce settlement. While remodeling that house, she came across not just a box full of letters but a diary as well and decided that the man who wrote them while serving in Europe during WW2 needed to have them back. In her quest to find the author and give him back the gift that inspired her to anything she wanted, she met his grandson Will and there was a chance of finding love again.

But would it work at all because they were so opposite? Would love overcome not only the odds but time and secrets? Or would it remain lost not just in one generation but several?

This is an incredible, page turning book that I will read time and time again always with a tissue box close by because by the time the books ends you will be bawling your eyes out.

I downloaded this and read it all the same day. It's a charming story with some strong characters and a bit of history woven in. The love that endures for years is a wonderful thing. Family crisis and conflict and communication and forgiveness are all wrapped up here. I enjoyed the book very much.

I found this book very hard to finish, I was bored while reading the story. The writing seemed vague and rushed, with the characters falling flat (Pops is the exception). Poor Will was written as an angry idiot who was constantly messing up & asking for forgiveness, and Adrienne rubbed me the wrong way. She was almost too perfect, in looks and personality. The author wrote her as being the 'right' party in every argument. It got to the point that every time Will got mad at her, I was hoping they would stay apart. Not wanting the main characters to find a happy ending with each other tells me Ms. Burch should have put as much effort into drawing more lovable characters as she did in her WWII research.

One Lavender Ribbon is an incredible story and a true modern romance. It was like reading two stories in one where you have the letters between two people in love back in WWII and the present where Adrienne was falling for Will. The amount of raw emotions in this book was so intense, I had tried even after I finished the book. Especially after I finished the book.

Story begins when Adrienne moves to a new house in Florida. She just got divorced and wanted to do something that will make her feel powerful and free. Her new house is a Victorian style fixer-upper but she loves it. Then one day when she goes in the basement, she discovers old letters from WWII veteran that he wrote to Grace, a woman who used to live in that same house years ago. When Adrienne decides to find the veteran, she becomes close with them which changes herself and her whole life.

I wasn't prepared for this story to change me. I wasn't prepared at all to feel like there's more out there than what I should feel like and understand that some of my silly problems were nothing compared to losing the one you love over and over and then finding them back again. I loved everything about this book and even though it was very sweet (which I'm not used to), all the characters were sincere and made me love them. Absolutely recommended!
