I'm a big fan of Carolyn Brown - and this book is another example of why I love her work. A bit of gossip overheard in the ladies' room during a funeral sparks Trudy into leaving her cheating husband. After twenty years of spoiling and pampering her husband and daughter, Trudy finally gets to think about herself for a change. As she spreads her wings and begins to fly she finds treasures in the house full of "junk" her great aunt left her and in the man next door. Billy Lee Tucker is just what Trudy needs, even if it takes her a while to realize it. Trudy's revenge on the cheating husband is priceless, and I'll remember it every time I see a can of sardines. Her struggles to maintain a relationship with her mother as Alzheimer's steals more memories are both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Trudy's interactions with her daughter, her gossipy cousins and everyone in town who feels free to offer unwanted advice on how to save her marriage were spot on. If you are not a Carolyn Brown fan when you pick this book up, you will be when you finish it.

Poor Trudy takes a stand and gives herself a good swift kick in the back-side, and I love that she gives up on being "nice" in favor of being honest. It would be crushing to find out your husband has been cheating on you since day one, and your daughter treats you like dirt, but it is amazing to see how Trudy thrives instead of folds. Billy Lee is the truest of true best friends, and never once does he allow Trudy to belittle or doubt herself. Anyone with a friend like Billy Lee should count themselves very lucky, so maybe we should all take a page out of this book and live our passion.

This book was pretty ridiculous (in my scope of reading.) I'm in my later 40s and this book has its lead character turning 40. She acts and speaks as though she is sixty-five or seventy (or how a 65-70 year old thinks a 40 year old should act or speak.) I scrolled to the front to see if this book had been written in the 1950s, but no. Occasionally a modern device will pop up, such as a cell phone or a laptop. She's 40 and lives in a house for months without a computer? Has to pick up a Go-Phone because she chucked hers into a ditch? I'm older than she is, and I have devices for days.
Really, what 40 year old woman in the sweaty/humid South squeezes herself into stockings and a silk black (or other respectable color) suit on a daily basis, outside of a funeral (where the story starts) or investment banking firm? Her "breakout" clothes are something my mother (65) wouldn't even wear- everyone in her town is so shocked that she would wear a red garment with a PARROT on the skirt to church. Red kitten heels? The horror! She eschews Versace and Liz Claiborne (how can those two very disparate designers be mentioned in the same sentence) at the Dallas Neiman Marcus where she shops in paint spattered capris and a raggedy t-shirt with a man who wears bib overalls and a pressed chambray shirt (really, how many times does she have to mention this.) Gad, I'm super casual, but I know not to go to a top flight department store in raggedy old jeans and a hole-y t-shirt.
Anyhow, if you are an older (60+) romantic Christian-leaning woman, this book might interest you.
The story is sweetly written, but the characters seem 20 years too old as they are written. It's all nicely tied up in a bow.Read more ›

This book was pure all-American goodness with heart and sass! I laughed, teared up, got mad and even sentimental. The characters in this story make you want to know them, love them and a few you may want to kick them. Carolyn Brown wrote another true winner with this book and I happily and encouragingly recommend this book to everyone ;)

This was a fantastic book that truly flowed. I loved the main characters in Trudy and Billy Lee, and even the spirit and conviction in dear Aunt Gert. The story was so vibrant that I could feel and see the house that Trudy inherited and the work they put into it. I loved the story, enough said.

I really did. I've read a couple others like this, the first few chapters start an interesting plot then devolve into a pitch for Christianity. It just seems insidious. Many people would be happy to read a Christian based romance but it would be nice if it would say so up front, so folks like me who find such things boring could bypass it. Authors that come to mind who say so up front are Francine Rivers and Bodie Thoene, fine authors.
Even if it had said so the story dragged on for quite awhile and the author described every little thing. It was like voyerism, a fly on the wall of someone's mundane life.

The Ladies' Room by Carolyn Brown is one of the most delightful Romance novels I have read in ages. Trudy has to start her life all over after she finally faces up to the truth: that her husband is a lying cheat and she has spent twenty years attempting to function in her marriage in spite of it. Great-Aunt Gert's funeral-day is that day, and that evening she walks out of her marriage house with the clothing on her back and contents of her purse, knowing that she wants nothing - NOTHING! - from that rat or from her former life...except a relationship with her daughter.
Trudy's internal fire burns away all pretense she has learned to build her life on as she remodels the house Great-Aunt Gert left her, with the help of Billy Lee, who was a childhood friend. None of her former "friends" attempt to make contact with Trudy to give her love, emotional support, or assistance...Only Billy Lee. Her former husband has even made conscious efforts to turn her daughter against her. But the fire burns hot, refining her spirit into her true self, so Trudy's triumph in the end is that when she finds her daughter again, it is with a fullness of mother-love and kindness; and when she finds her love for Billy Lee, it is with the fullness of the love in both their hearts after a year of not courting but working together to build a life for themselves.
