I love Heather Graham but this is one of my least favorite in this series. I didn't think the two main characters had any spark and I thought the side story with the gang members was really cheesy. I like Graham's books because you always know three things: the two main characters are going to sleep together halfway through the book, at least one of the people you've been introduced to is somehow involved in the mystery and the characters usually have combustible chemistry. Only one of those three things (the sex) happened in this book. I was just bored. I'm not going to give up on Graham. This is not a book I'll be reading again, though.

Hannah O’Brien grew up in this fabulous house in Key West, FL. When her uncle suddenly passed away he left it to Hannah who turned it into a bed and breakfast…Siren of the Sea. It came complete with its own resident ghosts, Melody Chandler and her lover Hagen Dundee. Not only did Hannah run the B&B but also was the local historian and did nightly tours of the ghosts of Key West. The night begins as usual, nothing special with the tour and as usual at the end of the tour Hannah leaves her group at the local haunted Hard Rock Café where they end with drinks and a meal before returning back to the B&B. When Shelly and Stuart return to the B&B Shelly can’t sleep, so they go to the pool to unwind. Suddenly there is a man standing over her with his throat cut and a knife in his hand.....Is this person real or a ghost.

This book opens with a couple pages of history of the house and area and then bam…it takes off running with suspense and intrigue. I was completely hooked from page one. The twists and turns of this book will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat. It is not your typical paranormal book. Each ghost plays a vital role in helping to solve the mystery. I have never been a fan of the paranormal, but I have loved these books by MS. Graham. I think in part because the characters and the plot are so believable. In MS. Graham’s previous book we met the FBI’s Krewe of Hunters, who specialize in solving mysteries of the paranormal, so when they arrived on the scene in this book it was a pleasant surprise. This is a stand-alone book so you do not have to read any of the previous works. This book is a must read for those of us who like a little romance and a lot of suspense, mystery and intrigue.

A haunted house in Key West, a notorious smuggling ring, long-lost treasure, and paranormal investigating federal agents make for an intriguing thriller in author Heather Graham’s THE CURSED.

Luke Daniels does a superb job narrating this suspenseful mystery. His cadence and mannerisms give each character their own unique voice to the point it seems there’s more than one reader. His interruption adds depth to the drama of this fascinating story.

Hannah O’Brien owns and operates a B&B in Key West and has the unique ability to not only see the two resident ghosts, but communicate with them as well. After a man is murdered in the alley behind her B&B, he comes to Hannah as a ghost asking for help.

Meanwhile, FBI Agent Dallas Samson makes Hannah’s life difficult when he begins questioning how she knows the things she knows. Dallas knows the dead man was an uncover agent trying to get inside information on a smuggling ring known as Los Lobos, the wolves.

It turns out Hannah has a connection to Los Lobos, since their leader believes there’s a long-lost treasure hidden in her B&B and he will stop at nothing to get it. Things really heat up when Hannah’s cousin Kelsey and her partner arrive in town. They are members of the FBI’s Krewe of Hunters, an elite unit of paranormal investigators. It seems Dallas has been on their radar for some time and there may be more to him than he’s telling.

While this is a paranormal mystery featuring ghosts, the author presents it in such a manner it will quickly seem plausible. The characters are well-developed and likable. The story flows at a steady pace and smoothly.

THE CURSED is a good mix of suspense, Key West legends, humor, murder, and romance blended together for a captivating story.

I love Heather Graham’s books, so of course I requested a review copy of “The Cursed“. While I did like the book, I felt like it was missing something, some of the originality I found in the other, previous books in the Krewe of Hunters series.

Hannah O’Brien, one of the main characters, owns and runs a Bed and Breakfast in Key West. The B&B is situated in a Victorian mansion she inherited from her great uncle. The mansion is haunted by a variety of ghosts, all of them friendly. Hannah sees the ghosts and communicates with them. But when a man is murdered in the B&B, and his spirit shows up on her doorstep, asking her to help him find out who murdered him, she learns there’s more to seeing spirits than she hoped for. When she finds herself in danger, FBI agent Dallas Samson must come to her rescue. Mix mystery, suspense, a smuggling ring, romance and ghosts in one package, and you’ve got the plot for this book.

It’s interesting, sure, and the combo smuggling ring, FBI, and ghosts, is still intriguing, but I felt like something was missing. Maybe the plot just didn’t sound intriguing enough. What was interesting, however, was the setting for the book, and the rich history of Key West. Heather Graham never ceases to amaze me with how much she knows about history, and how adequately she pours this knowledge into her books.

The writing, as usual, was great, and the characters… I certainly found Dallas entertaining, but Hannah came across as a little bland.

Either way, The Cursed is a solid paranormal mystery read with a large dose of romance. It’s a good book if you’re a fan of Heather Graham’s writing, and you don’t need to read the other books in the series to enjoy this one, as it can be read as a stand-alone. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
