"A heartbreaking, yet heartwarming ending to a series that captivated me from start to finish." - Colleen Hoover, New York Times bestselling author of Hopeless
Review
“I loved being in Emma’s world, even when things were so dark that I found myself worried for her. The journey of her life through the past three books has literally left me out of breath. I have been recommending this book to my friends and family left and right.” –Night Owl Reviews (Top Pick selection)
Rebecca Donovan is the USA Today Bestselling Author of the highly-acclaimed New Adult trilogy, The Breathing Series, with novels: Reason to Breathe, Barely Breathing, and Out of Breath. Her latest release -the standalone New Adult novel What If -released in ebook in September 2014 and the paperback is slated for January 2015.
She is currently writing The Burning Series, a spin-off trilogy from The Breathing Series, focused on the life of character Jonathan Reese.
Rebecca is a graduate of the University of Missouri -Columbia and lives in a quiet town in Massachusetts with her son. Excited by all that makes life possible, she is a music enthusiast and is willing to try just about anything once.
Let me just start with saying that I have been a fan of the Breathing series books, especially the first book, and I awaited anxiously for this last part of the series to be released, having high hopes for it. I'm sad to say that I was pretty disappointed.
I don't think that Out of Breath is a good book. I didn't hate it, but it didn't come close to being the great books that the first two of the series were. There were several things I had problems with regarding the writing style and the characters' development. There was definitely something missing from this book, and I know part of it has to do with the fact that the empathy I had for Emma in the first two books was now gone.
In Out of Breath, apparently two years have gone by, and Emma, who has thrown herself into her college studies, stays away from dating, and continues to keep all her feelings to herself, all of a sudden changes into a promiscuous party girl when she is reminded of her past.
One of the things about this story that I kind of found odd, is that although it's known that Emma doesn't like parties, she's not comfortable being around a lot of people, tends to be socially awkward, and doesn't like to drink alcohol, she is constantly going to parties in this book. She lets her friends talk her into going to these parties, but not before they constantly ridicule her about her wardrobe and complain that she should be wearing dresses. These things are repetitive throughout the book, which got quite annoying.
Also, Emma's so-called friends are overly protective of her to the point that they think they have to watch her every minute.Read more ›

Have you ever read a series that triggered every emotion that you hold? Ever read a series that not only broke your heart into a million pieces but also slowly put those pieces back together like a puzzle? Have you ever wanted to do physical harm to a character and you honestly didn't care what happened to them as long as it was slow and painful? Have you ever read a series that made you hold your breath waiting to read what will happen next knowing that it would probably either warm your soul or my your heart ache? Has your heart every exploded with so much joy when in the end everything falls into place and you can finally breath again? This is that series for me, a series that left me panting for breathe but in the end had me breathing clear beautiful air that filled my lungs and warmed my soul.
So the story of Evan and Emma finally comes to its conclusion. My heart is heavy and joyful as I sit and write this review because I know this gut wrenching, heartwarming, consuming series is over. Sadly I was not reviewing books when I read Barely Breathing and Reason to Breath but this review alone will let you know exactly how I felt about the series as a whole. It would be a mistake to not experience the story of Emma and Evan. It's a story of learning how to fight back, to let go, to live, to learn, to love, to forgive, and to learn how to breathe again.
--I chose to live. I chose to love. I chose to breathe. - Out of Breath

There are moments in life you'll never forget. Moments that brand your heart. Moments that shatter your soul. Moments that are infinite.
New emotions are created in these moments.
Time stops in these moments.
We lose ourselves in these moments...
We all shared this moment at the end of Reason to Breathe. Our happily ever after was ripped away only to be replaced by emotions we didn't even know existed. Emotions created by a moment that caused us to stop breathing. A fearless ending that shocked the world.
After that, we grieved.
We grieved for the unknown.
That grief however, was replaced by anger.
After being physically assaulted by emotions and a cliffhanger heard round the world, Rebecca Donovan turned right around and emotionally raped us with Barely Breathing. However, we insanely and greedily kept coming back for more (I also wanted to judo chop her right in the f---fagina....repeatedly).
Regardless, we just wanted more! In Out Of Breath, Rebecca Donovan gives us more.
At first, I was selfishly disappointed. I wanted instant resolution. I wanted to open the book and fall right into Emma and Evan. It's been so long, too long. I didn't want to know the new characters. I didn't want to know Cole. This is Emma and Evan's story dammit! Give me what I want!!
Rebecca Donovan changed what I wanted!
Without me even being aware of it, she gave me something I didn't even know I wanted. Instead of constantly looking ahead for my resolution. She made it okay for me to be in the present. I stopped looking for something else and found something new, being able to focus on the now. Enjoying the now. Enjoying Cole. Give yourself some time, you'll get there.Read more ›
