Review

"In this thrilling follow-up to SLEEP WITH THE LIGHTS ON, Shayne amps up both the creep factor and the suspense. She continues to build on the sexual tension between the main characters, fostering a humming anticipation that builds as the story unfolds. She pairs this with an intriguing plot that will have readers guessing till the last page." -RT Book Reviews on WAKE TO DARKNESS

Psychic murder mysteries are one of my favorite types of reads. This is the third book(plus a novella)in this series, and I have read, and enjoyed them all. I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest and fair review.

Rachel de Luca is an author of best selling, self help books, and up until a few months ago, was blind. After a corneal transplant, she can now see. Mason Brown is a homicide detective, and it’s his brother’s cornea’s that Rachel was given. Since the beginning, these two have shared an emotional connection, especially when Rachel starts dreaming about the serial killer that Mason is hunting. By this time in these books, the two have solved more then several murders, and even saved Rachel’s assistant, when she was kidnapped. The two work extremely well together in solving crimes, and are really starting to work well together in their personal lives, as well.

This time around, Mason is called to look into a judges daughter’s disappearance. Although initially hesitant, Rachel joins in the investigation. The judges daughter is newly blind, and that resonates with Rachel. It’s not long before they realize there are nine missing young girls. And then, the police start finding bodies.

I always enjoy the characters of Rachel and Mason. To me, it’s like connecting with old friends now that we’re three books in. The two are still dancing around each other about their true feelings for each other. They’ve got the friends with benefits thing, down pat. Rachel is full of snark, and usually thinks what she writes is total bull, but it’s made her rich, so she keeps on writing it. Mason pretty much loves everything about her. He’s the total package, strong, smart and honorable.

Innocent Prey is the third book in the Brown & De Luca series by Maggie Shayne.

I’m going to do something different today. I’m going to give you five reasons why you should read Innocent Prey.

1. Rachel de Luca. Rachel is one of my all time favorite heroines. She went blind when she was 12-years-old, twenty years later she recovered her sight after having a cornea transplant. Apart from seeing her sight brought many changes to her life. What changes? You need to read this series.
I love seeing the world through her eyes because it makes you realize all the things you take for granted. But that’s not the only reason I love her. I love her because she’s smart, sassy, witty and all around very real. She is one of those persons you would love to have as a friend.

2. Detective Mason Brown. Mason is the perfect hero, he’s not only handsome as hell, he is also intelligent, caring and very loyal. He is willing to go the extra mile and more to protect those he loves, he did it in previous book and he does it again in this one. He’s what I called a swoon worthy hero.

3. Mason and Rachel’s Relationship. Mason and Rachel have come a long way, they are together, but no officially. They are both afraid of scaring the other by showing too much interest, but what they can’t see is that they are both feeling the same way. It was highly entertaining to see them play around their feelings, pretending not to want what they both wanted… and the end! OMG! The end!!

4. The Mystery. The mystery is well plotted, with enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. I’m usually really good uncovering the whodunit, but I’m happy to say Mrs. Shayne really surprised me with this one. Well-done Mrs. Shayne, well done!

5. The Writing.

The trouble with reading any of the books in the Brown and de Luca series is that when you reach the end, you want more! I've been anxiously awaiting the release of this latest addition to the series since I finished the last one, and this was just as good as the others have been. The characters are engaging and the story moves at a perfect pace. There are the elements of suspense, romance, comedy, and also some very thought-provoking lessons woven throughout the story. You're left wishing you could meet these characters in person, because they would be such wonderful people to hang out with and have adventures with. I can't wait for the next book!!

INNOCENT PREY is as full of humor and suspense as each of the previous novels in this series. From the first page to the very last there is never a dull moment in this book and my only complaint is that I didn't want it to end! The characters are real and wonderfully written. Even the dog, Myrtle is a favorite character of mine. If you are trying to decide whether to read this book or not...READ IT! You won't be sorry! If you have yet to read the previous novels in the series, I highly recommend those too. Humor, romance and thrilling suspense, these books have it all!

I really like de Luca's attitude about her life and what goes on in her life and toward Brown. they are perfect together in personal life and police work. if you haven't read these books, start with the first one. I have preordered the next one.
