Editorial Reviews

Review

“A fine addition to the Truly, Idaho series, Gibson’s latest features lots of humor, steamy encounters and cute kids, as well as grown-ups dealing with tough, real-life issues. An excellent, fun read that stands alone.” (RT Book Reviews (4 1/2 Stars))

“An entertaining read, full of witty repartee, sexual tension and a romantic tango between two attracted but conflicted main characters.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“This story is romantic and deeply emotional - the descriptions of Blake’s battle with alcohol are particularly moving - all while displaying Gibson’s trademark sexy humor.” (Sarah MacLean, Washington Post)

“If you are looking for a smart, funny, sexy contemporary, then you don’t want to miss What I Love about You.” (Heroes & Heartbreakers)

About the Author

Rachel Gibson lives in Idaho with her husband, three kids, two cats, and a dog of mysterious origin. She began her fiction career at age sixteen, when she ran her car into the side of a hill, retrieved the bumper, and drove to a parking lot, where she strategically scattered the car's broken glass all about. She told her parents she'd been the victim of a hit-and-run and they believed her. She's been making up stories ever since, although she gets paid better for them nowadays.

More About the Author

With the publication of New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Gibson's first book, readers discovered one of contemporary romance's freshest voices. Four of her novels were named among the Top Ten Favorite Books of the Year by Romance Writers of America.

Rachel's storytelling career began at the age of sixteen when she ran her Chevy Vega into the side of a hill, retrieved the bumper and broken glass from the ground, and drove to her high school parking lot. With the help of her friend, she strategically scattered the broken pieces and told her parents she'd been the victim of a hit and run. They believed her, and she's been telling stories ever since.

When not writing, Rachel can be found boating on Payette Lake with Mr. Gibson, shopping for shoes, or forcing her love on an ungrateful cat.

I don't think this book was her best but it was miles better than the last one.

***Spoilers*** Rachel Gibson had me with the first couple of pages. Blake's struggle with the bottle of Johnnie Walker captured my interest. Then the cute little neighbor girl, Charlotte, came to visit (she was the best part of the book, by the way). I really could not reconcile the man who is supposed to be the hero of the book with the man who spoke so crudely to a 5 year old child. Sorry, but I didn't like Blake nor did I like his on again, off again treatment of Natalie. She also had her problems. Spending 5 years without a relationship so she could protect her child from heartbreak, she completely reversed her standards with Blake. They had unprotected sex in the living room with her daughter (hopefully) asleep in the adjoining bedroom. So much for discretion! As the book progressed, there were hints that Natalie might be pregnant but that was left hanging at the end of the book. There was an exhusband who showed up but his relationship with Natalie and Charlotte was left hanging. We did not find out if he was reformed or still a jerk. Blake had a twin brother who showed up but that relationship was left hanging, also. Suddenly with not much explanation, Blake finally decided he was in love with Natalie and she fell into his arms with no qualms about his being an alcoholic and suffering from PTSD and anger issues.

There were editing problems everywhere. Blake went to the grocery store and put a bag of oranges in his cart. Two pages later, he put a bag of oranges in his cart. Reference was made repeatedly about Blake's "cold gray eyes". The language used is very rough. And last but not least, my own personal dislike: Several books earlier, Ms. Gibson started referring to her heroes' private parts as their "package".

Ms. Gibson is revisiting the same themes, storyline and sometime sentences from her previous books. It would be nice to read something original from her instead of having scenes be virtually rewritten from years gone by. When you read a sentence with dialogue and can remember the exact scene from another of the author's book where it played out before, you're either too familiar with the author or they've hit the creativity wall. I've read everything except the last book Ms. Gibson has written and this book was another in a line of unfortunate disappointments of the past couple of years.

Rachel Gibson used to write clever, funny books with well developed characters whose antics made you laugh out loud. Unfortunately, she, too, has followed the trend of filling pages and pages of a novel with graphic sexual descriptions. I love her earlier books. This one has poorly developed, improbable characters, doing really impossible things. What a disappointment. No more Rachel Gibson books for me. Her creative well is dry.

Just an okay read- as others have said the ending was rushed and left too open. Why not include an epilogue? Will need to go back to re-reading Gibson's earlier works which were hilarious and much better developed.

2.5 Stars!

I'm going to keep this review brief because the other 2 and 3 star reviewers encompass most of my feelings about this book. As a dedicated Rachel Gibson fan (who pre-ordered this book, mind you) I would say this book is OK. Certainly not Ms. Gibson's best work and as the other reviewers mentioned, she copied scenes/sentences/vibes from her other books and if you've read her stuff well then you'll notice that.

Things that I liked:

1) Is it me or in every book where there is a single parent the other parent is a) dead or b) deadbeat/vanished. It's really easy for authors to make a love story happen without the other parent getting in the way. Well Rachel Gibson did NOT take the easy way out here. I LOVED that Charlotte's father was involved in the book and had some sort of presence in Charlotte's life (albeit after he got out of jail but still). That made the story more believable (although other parts of the premise were super unrealistic). In real life, most of the time the other parent is involved in some way (either them or their family) - how many women are *lucky* enough to not have to deal with a crappy baby daddy/ex. So it's good that he's in the story and that we hear about them finding a way to co-parent while she finds love because that's the way it goes in real life.

2) I liked that there wasn't some big angst in the story because alot of time it is really cringe worthy. Although the heroine fell in love with the hero way too fast and it didn't ring true in the slightest (well maybe it does because she's a naive small-town woman).

I'm hoping Rachel Gibson finds her creative juices and gives us original stories we can enjoy again! I will not return this book - although I contemplated it...

I debated whether or not to read this after reading some negative reviews on it. I was a fan of this authors earlier books but in the last few years her stories have disappointed. I decided to give this one a try after reading and enjoying the sample.

Blake amused me! He's a typical bachelor. He's not into kids or marriage. When he meets the 5 year old girl Charlotte from next door he's a little rude to her but I found it funny. When he then meets her mother Natalie, he's attracted to her. Blake is an ex Navy SEAL and a recovering alcoholic. He hasn't been clean that long and alcohol is still a temptation for him but then he starts to be tempted by Natalie.

Natalie's ex husband embezzled money and after years of them trying for a baby when she finally conceived he left and was later caught and put in prison for the embezzlement. He had also told Natalie she was 'boring'. Natalie hasn't dated much in the last five years but she is attracted to Blake but she knows he's a commitment phobe and if she does sleep with him, she knows she will just be a booty call.

Natalie's ex is due out of prison but I felt that part of the storyline was a bit weak. Natalie was a bit too forgiving and the story between the two seemed to be resolved too easily and even left me wondering if Ms Gibson has a novel planned for Michael the ex considering she made him such a reformed character.

It's a very predictable storyline and nothing new from the pen of Ms Gibson but I will say it's a vast improvement on her previous novels. I loved Blake's witty interactions with Charlotte and Natalie. However, I wasn't completely convinced that Natalie and Blake fell in love, the romance part of their story was too rushed to get that feeling.
