I guess my life as a writer started when I was five; I'd sit under the kitchen table with my box of multi-colored wax crayons (I miss those) and create picture books. Creative writing was always my favorite subject and I used any free time I had to sit down with a notepad.

Not much has changed, except that now I have developed vampirish habits: my writing "day" typically starts at 1am.

I'm an avid reader and a big fan of cookie ice cream. When working I have to disconnect the internet for fear of being endlessly distracted by websites such as www.icanhas.cheezburger.com.

I normally ignore any recommendations on Facebook, but the cover of the book intrigued me. The way I would describe the whole series is a mature, possible realism, laughter, sadness, dramatic and most importantly a strong female character!
Sofia Claremont is no Bella Swan from Twilight, she is a strong 17 year old, who has unanswered questions from her parents, who left her at a friends house a decade ago. Yet she does not let that get in her way.
Without giving too much away Derek Novak is the Prince of The Shade, which is an island hidden from humans, and its inhabitants are Vampires and their slaves. Sofia gets captured on her 18th birthday and taken to The Shade, because of a prophecy that was made when Derek was put into an enchanted sleep 400 years ago! Are the Vampires at The Shade pure monsters or can Sofia tame them?

Each chapter is written by a different characters perspective, and not one bit confusing!
Each chapter is as gripping as the last.

I will end this saying I read book 1 to book 5 in 4 days, I could not put them down and cannot wait for book 6!! If you liked The Twilight series, Sookie Stackhouse novels (True blood) and The Vampire Diaries then read these!!

I admit that I went into this story thinking that it would be an exact replica of Twilight. However, shortly into the story I found that it was not. The beginning was a little odd to me because everything happened so quickly to Sofia. However, I do appreciate that her capture and where she ends up was not drawn out, like in other novels.

I totally loved this read. I finished it in two nights, and could have finished it in one if I didn't have a four year old to look after (LOL). The story was very compelling and well told. I liked how the author gave contrasting views of the characters as well as how she was able to "pick up" where the other character left off. Others would probably find this confusing, but I thought it was used appropriately. I also loved how the characters "fell" for one another. I guess I am a hopeless romantic, and love the thought of being in love. But, I could actually feel the desire that the characters had for one another. I also loved how the vampires in this novel appeared to have more "human" emotions and characteristics, unlike other stories I have read. It was also a very interesting twist to have humans as slaves/pets. I totally understood the direction, and it was creative genius.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone considering reading it. You will not be disappointed. I will also be reading more in the series. Keep up the good work!

To the skeptics out there, please read the book first before making assumptions. Do not compare it to the novel Twilight or other books out there. It is quite different, and well written.

I was apprehensive when I saw the title of this book; instantly picturing a victimized Annastasia Steel cuffed to a medieval vampire torture device with a fanged Christian Grey hovering over her with who-knows-what in mind. What a wonderful surprise for me then when I started reading and found A Shade of Vampire an utterly enthralling, highly exciting and beautifully sensitive story. Sofia Claremont, the main character, who is captured and taken to the Blood Shade, home of the Novak vampire family and their coven, is not at all a victim. She has this to say about Victimhood:
"I know an excuse when I hear one. Don't you dare deceive yourself into believing that you're the victim."

She is also not stupidly rebellious, brave or tough, and knows when to stand down for her own good when the odds are stacked against her. As the story unfolds we get to meet Lucas the not so nice brother, Ben - Sofia's more than best friend, Corrine the witch, and several very interesting, well crafted characters; and, yes, vampires also have some delicious intrigue in their society!

This story gets started and just never gives the reader a chance to get bored. Although fast paced, I still understood the plot and characters with the greatest ease. The author works information about the vampire world and society into conversations thus sparing the reader lengthy descriptions of the who, what, why, where and how.

I had thought that I was utterly immune to the handsome, romantic vampire male but, Derek Novak, the hero of this book, made me reconsider this attitude. The romantic relationship that develops during the story is so tender, caring and bittersweet that it often brought tears to my eyes while smiling at the same time. Talk about fate sealed with a kiss ...

So honestly I thought this book was going to be nothing more than a short book about a girl who was kidnapped by one vampire and falls for another, and while that was what happened it was so much more than that. Sofia was a girl who didn't let something that happened to her rule her life. She was smart, feisty, and brave. She doesn't let her fear keep her from anything. Though she is scared and knows that giving in would be the easier thing to do she still tries to get away. What I really loved about Sofia was that once the prince showed interest in her she never felt consumed by everything. Not once did she think "oh everything is great and I never want to leave." There was some kind of conflict within herself, even though at some points her life seemed better than before.

Then there was Derek himself, the vampire prince who I instantly took a liking to. He was great. He woke up after 400 years and his first thought wasn't "I'm vampire and the prince, how great is this?" He actually wasn't all that happy about and he felt compassion for others. What I really loved about him was his fight to hold on to every little bit of humanity he had left.

The two of them were great together and I loved despite everything that was stacked against them the two found someone they could truly be themselves with. Together they had to face so many things but none more dangerous than Derek's own brother Lucas, who was two cards shorts of a full deck.
This book was fast paced, action packed and generally a good read. So check it out. And ending with that epilogue told from Vivienne's point of view you better believe I'm waiting for the next book.
