I always enjoy returning to Thea Harrison’s world of the Elder Races. It’s true that I haven’t loved every installment equally, but that’s because Harrison makes each of her stories and all of her characters and species so unique. You never get the same book twice, which keeps things interesting, but also means some books will resonate better with certain readers than others. This is a return to the world of the Vampyres. This didn’t excite me, considering the only other Vampyre centered book was one of my least favorite in the series. I ended up liking this book much, much more than that one, and it left me excited for the next installment.
Our hero is Xavier, right hand man to Vampyre King Julian. He meets the heroine, Tess, at an auction where vampires collect human attendants. I got the impression that he wasn’t there to find someone, but her blunt honesty intrigued him and he ended up selecting her for his flock. Tess doesn’t really want to be a blood source to a vamp, but she is in deep trouble with a Djinn and she is hoping that joining Xavier’s household will grant her some protection.
The story follows Tess as she faces her fears about Vampyres and Xavier, himself. Yes, there are some scenes from Xavier’s POV, but for me this book was definitely Tess-centric. She is the much more developed of the two characters, which is interesting since the hero is centuries old and she’s 24, but no matter. I found her very easy to relate to. She is unable to keep her mouth shut when she should. She follows her moral compass, even when it’s inconvenient. She is honest and blunt, stubborn and determined. This novel of the Elder Races may be a bit different from many of the others in that it is primarily a slow developing romance and much less of an action novel as many of the others have been.
This story of Tess who is running from a previous employer who wants her back or dead and through a bit of luck ends up at the estate of Xavier one of the most powerful men in the Nighttime demesne. The story is one of self discovery and romance catching these two completely by surprise.
This is a slow burn romance that was done exceptionally well so as not to bore the reader, much of the novel is devoted to Tess becoming a much stronger person physically and mentally while Xavier tries to figure out what it is about this woman that seems to attract him so much.
The novel has a bit of humor, a bit of the feel of "My Fair Lady" and mix it together and it makes for a wonderful reading experience. It should be noted that this novel has almost no connection with the rest of the Elder Races novels and can be read pretty much as a stand alone.
Bottom Line: Highly recommended, immensely entertaining, 4.5 Stars rounded to 5

Night’s Honor by Thea Harrison is the 7th full length novel of her Elder Races series. I am a big fan of this series, and this book took me by surprise. Thea goes out of her normal range, with a hero we never thought would get his own story. We do not get to see any of Dragos and his team. Night’s Honor belongs to Xavier del Torro, who is a Vampyre, and the Nightkind King Julian’s right hand. When we met Xavier in Serpent’s Kiss, he and Julian were not our favorites, as they gave our heroes Rune and Carling a hard time.
We meet our heroine, Tess at the start. She is on the run, and decides to audition to become an attendant for a powerful vampire. In disgust, she leaves the audition, as no one paid attention to her. Except one…… Xavier, one of the most feared and powerful of the Vampyres.
There is something about Tess that makes Xavier hire her for a one year trial. He senses her fear of him, but honors his deal to give her chance to learn. Tess meets many of the people working for Xavier, as she is trained how to fight and handle weapons. Each day she is pushed to the max by those training her, but she seems somewhat happy & safe living in this mansion. Xavier personally trains her how to dance the Waltz, and slowly she becomes more comfortable with him. One of the prerequisite for her to get past the one year trial is to be able to offer blood to him, something she cannot bring herself to do.
Xavier finds himself becoming obsessed with Tess, and knows she is running from something. When she reads something in the paper, she decides to run again. Only this time, Xavier stops her and gets the truth out of her. Tess is running from a very powerful Dijinn, and not even Xavier can stop him.Read more ›
