FIREBIRD, has become my favourite Susanna Kearsley novel to date..

When a carving called the Firebird, leads Nicola Marter, a young women with psychic abilities, on an exciting adventure across Europe from England, Scotland, Belgium to Russia she is aided by Rob McMorran, her friend from Scotland, who's psychic abilities are even greater than Nicola's, suddenly, the Past meets the Present...
Firebird, is a beautifully written novel, where the story just flows from the pages and is captivating from the first page to the last. It is clear that Susanna Kearsley was passionate about her characters and her story when she wrote this novel. You can tell that the historical information in this novel, had been very well researched and it is quite interesting.
The novel has an engaging story plot and dialogue which transfers between contemporary and historical characters with ease. I also found this novel to be extremely visual. I felt my senses come alive while reading this wonderful story. I was travelling with the characters from England to Scotland to Belgium and on to Russia and what a wonderful journey it was! I found myself completely engrossed by the lives of the characters and the excellent plot. The journey involved an exciting adventure, that I did not want to see come to an end and the protagonists in this story, were so endearing, that I found myself emotionally attached to them.... Simply put, "It was a Damn Good Read!"

I've purchased this book because I have enjoyed Susanna Kearsley previous books. Still being my favorites Mariana and The Winter Sea, to my surprise this is a new book that also follow up with the beloved characters of The Winter Sea!! One of the main characters is also a dear one (all grown up now) from The Shadowy Horses.
Nicola works for a respectable art dealer in London who specializes in Russian art. She also posses the gift (a curse in her opinion) of psychometry. Thanks to her abilities she decides to help a woman who is in great need to sell an old wooden crave figure of a Firebird. She told Nicola that the Firebird has been in her family for generations and was given to her ancestor by Catherine I of Russia. Since its impossible to prove the real value of the crave figure, Nicola starts a quest to find the true story of the Firebird with the hope to prove the value of the piece. She doubts her abilities and is afraid to use them, therefore she decided to ask for the help of Rob (an ex boyfriend), who is highly gifted in the paranormal.
During their quest we met Anna, a lovely girl from the past that grown up as a very likeable and strong woman. She is one of the leading characters of the book and is the daughter of Sophia and John Moray. By a leap of faith she became the ward of Vice Admiral Gordon who was commissioned in Russia by Peter the Great.Read more ›

I have read many of Susanna Kearsley's books and loved every single one of them. I could not wait to get my hands on this one and had already pre-ordered it. I did not realize that it was 'kind of' a sequel to Winter Sea - in my mind anyway. Whether it was supposed to be or not I don't know. It could absolutely be read as a stand-alone but I love the fact that I had read Winter Sea three times (the third right before I got this book) and there were parts of Winter Sea that carried on after many many years so smoothly into a transition of their own in this new book, Firebird. I will be re-reading this one again. The entire plot and the characters and her intelligent writing truly captured my heart from start to finish.

Susanna Kearsley, in her latest novel, revisits her Jacobite landscape with a sure hand that is certain to captivate her fans, but unfortunately with not the same degree of fascination as her previous novels with a paranormal flare.
Although "the FIrebird" is not billed as a sequel to "The Winter Sea" (also entitled "Sophia's Secret," it is just that. Indeed, the story line can stand alone, but in order to thoroughly enjoy this novel in the fullest manner, guessing along, jumping to conclusions and being interactive, it is recommended that "Sea" be read first. Nonetheless, "The Firebird" is not as compelling a read as its predecessor. The present day framing technique that worked so well for author Susanna Kearsley in "Sea" snags a bit when main character Rob McMorran of The Shadowy Horses, The fame, partners up with first person narrator Nicola Marter in order to discover the history of an item--a wooden firebird object d'art said to be once in the possession of the Czarina Catherine of Russia.
Its not that the chemistry between the two is bad; it isn't. In fact, Kearsley, as always, does a marvelous job of creating male characters that complement her women heroines quite well. Rob, all grown up from his cameo role in a previous novel, could make a grown girl cry: not only is he dazzlingly handsome, but underspoken, kind, dependable and patient.Read more ›
