As I said, I just couldn't get into this book and none of the characters were that interesting to me.

Reading this book was a foregone conclusion for me because, well, it's Jeaniene Frost, and that pretty much says it all in my opinion. I even skimmed the blurb which I NEVER do because New Adult isn't really my genre, and I wanted to make sure that I knew what I was getting in to. Unfortunately the synopsis is rather vague, and I didn't realize that this story was actually about Heaven & Hell until I had reached the point of no return. Angels are by far my least favourite supe, so THE BEAUTIFUL ASHES' saving grace was the fact that it revolved mostly around demons, and again... it's Jeaniene Frost. I'd even go so far as to say that it's a NA version of SUPERNATURAL--the protagonists are driving around in a black car ('68 Challenger) with an arsenal of weapons in the trunk searching for a special (Colt) slingshot. Now, I'm not claiming that Adrian is hotter than Dean Winchester because that would be a bold faced lie, but the world, characters, and writing were excellent, as always because, yup--Jeaniene Frost.

The very foundation of the BROKEN DESTINY universe is in itself somewhat of a spoiler, and although I'm sure that there will be plenty of reviewers who'll spill the beans, I won't be one of them. So, please excuse my vagueness, but I loved how the author selected a specific religious story, and built her mythology around it. One of my main problems with `angel books' is the whole Heaven vs. Hell plot line; it doesn't matter if it's vampires, werewolves, or witches because in the end it always comes down to good fighting evil. And, don't get me wrong, that is ultimately what THE BEAUTIFUL ASHES is about, but the story is also more personal because Frost has upped the stakes. Meet Adrian, a reformed Demon prince who's destined to screw up (anti-hero fan girls, REJOICE!!).

****Review copy received for an honest review.****

The Beautiful Ashes (Broken Destiny, book 1) by Jeaniene Frost

Part of me likes to believe that if I hadn't read The Dark World by Cara Lynn Shultz, or any of the other-world-with-demon books, I would have loved The Beautiful Ashes more. The reality is, it's just boring and quite honestly it does not bring more then two new things to the angel/demon genre. First was Frost's signature wit. The second thing is the mythology, while it's not 100% unique the bloodlines part is fun and I enjoyed Frost's interpretation and alternate view on all that biblical mythology. (And you'll want to have a certain Lady Gaga song handy.)

While I was excited that Ivy would be a different kind of lead for Frost, I soon realized that if Ivy was put in a line up with many other YA/NA characters out there I couldn't pick her out. Maybe if she cracked a joke, but other then that she doesn't stand out. Even with things I love such as bravery, loyalty, and perseverance to put her on my good side. Ivy isn't a bad character, and if anything it's nice to have a smart and strong lead. The genre needs them! What hurt my connection to Ivy is that there isn't much development and then at page 11 the male lead enters. He just happens to have broken in to her hotel and is waiting for Ivy, who just got attacked. She isn't worried, nope she instead thinks this:

"I knew I should turn around, open the door and run, preferably while screaming. That was the only logical response, but I stood there, somehow unafraid of my intruder. Great. My survival instincts must've secretly made a suicide pact."

No Ivy dear. What you're survival instincts are suffering from is what I like to call the plague of storytelling: Instalove.

Frost has done it again and created yet another world that I can easily get lost in! This new world is complex, dark, and full of action. I admit that I absolutely loved the Night Huntress series and was sad to see it end, but Frost has delivered a completely new world to enjoy. The Beautiful Ashes has a much different feel than the Night Huntress books. There's no sex in this book, it is pure world building and laying the foundation for the series. The story starts off with a bang and action ensues right away.

In The Beautiful Ashes we are introduced to Ivy, a 20 year old college student, who should be enjoying her life as a carefree student. However, fate has stepped in and her whole world is turned upside down. While trying to process the horrific loss of both parents in a car accident, Ivy is now investigating the disappearance of her only sister as well. Ivy is determined to find and rescue her sister from whatever misfortune has found her, however she quickly discovers that there is much more happening than she could have ever imagined. Ivy has a heritage and legacy that will shape the future of mankind and could possibly reshape the world as we know it.

Adrian steps in to save Ivy and soon discovers that their two destinies may be irrevocably intertwined whether they want it or not. Adrian is more than he seems, has a dark and disturbing past, as well as his own agenda. Adrian knows who and what he is, as well as what being around Ivy will mean to both of them. He is determined to fight the legacy that his bloodline has cursed him with. He also believes that in order to escape his destiny has must help Ivy and then get away from her as quickly as possible despite his growing feelings for her.
