Review

“Tucker deftly steers the damsel-in-(serious, nearly fatal, possibly mob-related)-distress-rescued-by-a-knight-in-shining armor storyline, making these star-crossed lovers compelling. A sexy romantic, gangster-tinged page-turner.” (Kirkus Reviews)

"Unique, engrossing, and heartbreaking. Burying Water is a mesmerizing read that will keep you captivated until the very last page." (Rachel Van Dyken #1 New York Times bestselling author)

"Dark, ominous, and sexy...compelling from beginning to end." (Laura Kaye New York Times bestselling author)

"Emotionally haunting. Richly evocative. Dangerously sexy. A stirring story of resilience, courage and the healing power of love." (Vilma's Book Blog)

"Lush, atmospheric, and addictive, with a romance that sizzles. Guard your heart." (Amber Hart author of Before You on Five Ways to Fall)

"You'll only need one reason to fall in love with K.A.Tucker." (Jennifer L. Armentrout #1 New York Times bestselling author on Five Ways to Fall)

"This is a fun, flirty, super sexy love story that offers all of the best of opposites attracting. K.A. Tucker's writing is engaging, witty, and endearing just like her characters." (Jay Crownover New York Times bestselling author on Five Ways to Fall)

I’ve been staring at a blank screen for an undetermined amount of time, not sure where to start with my review on Burying Water. And the reason for this is - there are no words left. K.A. Tucker has created such a brilliant piece of work, that I’m almost afraid to talk about it for fear of not being worthy to discuss such a simply amazing book. This wasn’t just another romantic read for me, this book has become a part of me, an extension of myself - it has latched onto my soul. Its taken pieces of my heart that I’ll never get back, and given me a feeling of warmth that I never want to let go. The laughter, the love, the suspense, and the ugly crying - all of it, I completely loved every second. Yes, the ugly crying is included in that. And I’m not talking about a few little tears either, I mean the painful, gasping ugly cry that hurts - but hurts in such a good way. It will happen, it does happpen - and through the tears the love behind the message will find you and help wipe away the sadness. KA Tucker’s writing is just that powerful and compelling.

I am lost and somehow found. I am afraid and yet somehow comforted. I am drifting and yet somehow….home.

Jesse Welles wasn’t looking for love. He wasn’t looking for any complications . 6 months ago, he landed the job of his dreams as a mechanic at a popular garage in Portland and he’s more than content spending his days doing what he loves - working on cars. He definitely wasn’t looking to meet a mysterious girl on the side of the road on a dark and stormy night. A girl who’s haunting eyes, cryptic words and seductive, soft lips have left him longing for more. When the same girl shows up weeks later, the wife of a very controlling, high powered man - the message is obvious.

Tucker is fantastic at plotting out her stories and fleshing out characters. Even secondary characters have a unique voice and enhance the story. The tale is broken into “then” and “now” chapters that allowed us to experience our Jane Doe and important characters before her accident and after. Each chapter is powerful and reveals clues. I never felt pulled between the two timelines, and each ended in such a way that kept me as the reader flipping the pages.

Our characters are flawed, sweet, and vulnerable. Jane Doe has lost her memory, and her only clues consist of the clothes she was wearing the night of the accident. Through her, we learn of her past, present, and experience her regaining her memories even as she creates new ones. I enjoyed getting to know Jane and her inner thoughts as she struggles to decide who she is. Jessie Welles is her new next-door neighbor, a sexy mechanic who is always willing to lend a helping hand. Jessie has made a few mistakes, and he is genuinely a good guy, who loves hard. Ginny is the ornery old woman who weaves quilts and befriends Jane. I adored this woman, and her backstory was fascinating. She made me laugh aloud and had me hugging myself tight as I thought about her past.

The romance threaded between the two timelines is a beautiful one, and yet tainted. I worried Tucker would not be able to make me see past some concerns and issues that I first experienced, but I was safe in her care. Both relationships felt genuine, and I loved how they entwined. This is mild on sexual content and high on sweet moments.

Jane’s memory loss created a little mystery, suspense and tension as the reader slowly pieces things together and begins to worry how it will unfold. Will we get our HEA?

A clever twist in which a young woman with amnesia works to discover just how she got there. Readers know her present, and we have some idea of the cause of her amnesia, but Tucker uses alternating points of view, one past and one present as we see the story from both Water and Jesse’s points of view.

Jesse’s story is one of falling in love with a woman who is married to a volatile and influential man. He leads us through their story, and we see just how their relationship developed. Yet his part is not all past, we do get a chance for these two to reunite and develop all over again.

For Water’s story, she wakes after a brutal and devastating attack, and has determined that she will follow the trail to regain who she was, and discover just what was done. Tucker’s imagery and imagination are used to good effect, infusing the words and voice of Water with emotion and a sense of desperation: completely understandable and logical. Readers will empathize with Water easily, even come to feel her struggle and confusion.

Jesse’s story is so solidly emotional and wrenching, as we watch him pine for the woman he lost, and struggle with his own emotions around what has happened to her, and her long struggle to recover and heal from the trauma. Secondary characters that are true ‘supporting’ cast are well drawn and interact well within the story, they are gentle, compassionate and take little to no nonsense from Water, even as they are teaching her to function in this new reality.

Far darker than a traditional romance, there are no hearts and flowers here, and there really isn’t the feel of the usual NA romance.
