I usually read historical romances, but am a sucker for a feel-good Christmas story. I think this may be the first book I've read by Lori Wilde; it won't be my last. While I can't compare it to others she's written, obviously, I can say that I found it engaging and exciting and found both Meredith and Hutch protagonists worth rooting for.

The historical romances I gravitate towards are generally straight-up relationship stories. I don't usually go for wider tales of intrigue. This one has that, but it's all tied in intimately to the relationship - Hutch is a combat-scarred, recently discharged veteran with a disability that may be purely psychological. Meredith is years on the run from a psychotic husband. Frankly, I wasn't sure from the description of the book how this book was going to justify bringing these two together, but it did it plausibly through the needs of two small, adorable children - Meredith's son and Hutch's niece. Without this glue, it would be hard to imagine this pair having any chance whatsoever.

The story was an exciting one, and not every development was expected. It kept me interested and flipping pages. (To be honest, some where a foregone conclusion.) Hutch and Meredith were sympathetic characters. Their behavior wasn't always precisely plausible, but romances tend to work on an accelerated timeline. When you're trying to sandwich one in to a holiday, you especially have to expect some rapid acceleration. I enjoyed the kids even though the phonetic spelling of kidspeak sometimes annoyed me; they weren't just motivation for the characters, they brought a lot of warmth. Overall, it was just a heart-warming and sometimes genuinely touching romance about two damaged people - two damaged _families_ - who genuinely need each other to heal.

Lori Wilde always write a good book but this one is great! I love both heroine and hero. Jane and Hutch are both a mess! She's running from an abusive ex-husband and he's running from his PTSD and the loss of his team of Delta Force in Afghanistan.

Jane is renting a room from Hutch's sister in this great town and Hutch comes home from Walter Reed hospital. His sister takes off on a vacation and leaves her 4 y.o. daughter, Kimmie, with Jane and she has a 4 y.o. son, Ben--they call themselves twins. Jane tries to talk to Hutch's sister over the phone when she calls to ask if she could leave Kimmie with Jane--she doesn't want her to go as she knows how charming a sociopath can be at first! Jane worries about her.

Story takes place in Twilight, TX and all the other books in the series are good books too. Lots of fun and humor with some problems that we see in a small town. Hutch is very well thought of in Twilight. It's a great time following Jane and Ben after she pepper sprays him! You can see why they will have an HEA lol

Well I've said enough and don't want to give any more spoilers!

This is my first Lori Wilde book. It will well written and pulls you in. It's a romance so of course the main characters find love, but I really enjoyed their journey. Both main characters have been damaged in different ways and have ghosts exorcise. The lead female is a strong, independent woman with a dark past. I liked her. Their story some interesting twists and turns. I especially enjoyed seeing things through the children's eyes on occasion. It adds a depth to the overall feeling of the book. The town of Twilight Texas almost becomes a character with its own personality and warm heart.
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of a blindside flashback and real time situation of violence toward the end that is a little more graphic than I expected from the overall tone of the book. The main characters experience both emotional and physical love, laughs, drama, fear and healing.
