Overall, Lara Adrian did a fine job with Marked by Midnight. The story made for a quick, fun read. Rowan had been in several previous Breed stories, so his character had already been established and he stayed true to it in this story. It was nice seeing him find his happily ever after. Nova made an great, tortured heroine, who was running away from her past, as his potential mate. The mystery about her abusive childhood was interesting. The mystery surrounding the floating corpses was intriguing. While the romance developed quickly, it was no more than expected in this short format. My only complaint was that after going to the trouble of creating two mysteries, Adrian decided to end the story once Rowan and Nova reached their accord and we never found out why the other men had been murdered or who was responsible for Nova's early years. I still want to know why the men were killed not just who did the deed and what exactly did Nova endure as a child ? Another chapter or an epilogue would have made a good novella perfect.

Set in London, Lara Adrian's novella Marked by Midnight is a pre-cursor to her next book release, Crave the Night.
Mathias Rowan has been introduced in previous Midnight Breed books. Nova is the latest introduction as a breed mate.
Rowan and his team of Order warriors are investigating a string of dead bodies that turn up in the Thames River. His investigation leads him to a grungy tattoo shop where he crosses paths with the reticent tattoo artist, Nova.
Nova is standoffish and pretends to have no knowledge of the latest river victim but Mathias suspects otherwise.
In an attempt to bait her, Mathias comes back for a tattoo and gets more than he bargains for. Nova and Mathias are drawn to one another despite their initial reluctance.
Of all the love interests in the Midnight Breed Series, Mathias and Nova's story is the most intriguing of all. A tattoo artist with a dark past who has a connection to a group of dead men found in the Thames River and is a breed mate is stuff of good books.
Meeting Mathias is a reminder of a life she has worked hard to escape but their instant attraction is hard to ignore for either the upstanding Mathias or the ultra-secretive Nova.
I am a huge fan of The Midnight Breed Series. The style of writing, the multi-dimensional characters who aren't the typical broken alpha-males with horrid pasts, intriguing storylines with a wealth of bad guys and heroines with heart make for books that I can never put down and look forward to for months as I wait for the next installment to be released.
Marked by Midnight has all those elements but I was disappointed Mathias and Nova didn't get a full-length novel thereby leaving a large number of unanswered questions.Read more ›

Great addition. Love this story. Attention to detail was spot-on. Two unlikely people falling in love. Good pacing in the beginning. Resolution to capturing the bad guy and punishing him seemed rushed. Ending was nice. Love the depth of emotions the protagonist has. She seemed very real. Would recommend this book to anyone. Although you can read this story alone, it is good if you read the series. You get more enjoyment from knowing things from the star. The backstory really helps.

When I started reading paranormal books again, after veering away from them for years, the series that was recommended to me to read was Black Dagger Brotherhood. And then I found the Midnight Breed books for myself. To me, while I still love the BDB books, the Midnight Breed books are superior to them. So when I found this novella a couple of days ago, I was super excited to read it. The story didn’t disappoint, but something else did.
Mathias is the head of the Order in London. The Order is a group of highly trained vampire warriors. They police other vampires(known as Breed) and generally keep the peace among the Breed. Someone is killing humans with a tattoo of a scarab on their hands, and then dumping them into the river. When Mathias gets involved in the case, he investigates a tattoo parlor where a young woman named Nova works. Even though she denies knowing anything about the deaths, Mathias knows better due to his psychic ability to feel when violence has taken place somewhere. It’s not long before he realizes that Nova has more then one secret.
Since this is a novella that takes place after eleven previous books, the reader that hasn’t read the previous books might be a bit lost as far as the world building, however, Adrian does explain enough so this could be a stand alone. This series is rich in world building and actually is one of the reasons that makes it better to me, then BDB. My stance is, if this is the only Midnight Breed book(novella)you read, then by all means read it. True, it is but a sample of the Midnight Breed world, but it does give the reader a feel for what they will get if you read this series.Read more ›

I'm a huge fan of Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series, it was the first paranormal romance series I discovered and I've even got a Breedmate mark tattoo so you could say I'm a little obsessed with these books. It's felt like a very long wait between the last two books but I was able to dive straight back into this world without any problem. Fans of the series will already be familiar with Mathias and remember him working alongside the Order in Boston and I was really pleased we were going to finally get to see him find his happily ever after.
Mathias is now living and working in London where he runs the local branch of the Order, he still reports directly to Lucan but he also works alongside JUSTIS (the Joint Urban Security Taskforce Inititaive Squad) a human and Breed law enforcement group. JUSTIS are investigating the murders of several gang members and Mathias has offered to help them discover who is behind the killings. His investigation leads him to a tattoo shop where he finds Breedmate Nova working as a tattoo artist. He knows immediately that Nova isn't telling him the whole truth but what he isn't sure of is whether she is innocent and just scared or whether she is guilty and trying to hide it from him. He is determined to get to the bottom of her secrets and the closer he gets the more he starts to realise how special she is.
I enjoyed Marked by Midnight but it is a fairly short novella so you have to be prepared for Mathias and Nova's relationship to progress at quite a rapid pace. This doesn't usually bother me as much in paranormal romance, especially not in novellas, but I have to admit that even I found the declarations of love came a bit too quickly and that made them slightly less believable.Read more ›
