Review

"Ashley delivers a deeply emotional second installment of the Chaos contemporary romance series (after Own the Wind)... Punctuated by blistering-hot sex scenes and fascinating glimpses into the tough world of motorcycle clubs, this romance also delivers true heart and emotion, and a story that will stay with the reader long after the final page is turned."—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review, on Fire Inside

"I felt all of the rushes, the adrenaline surges, the anger spikes... my heart pumping in fury. My eyes tearing up when her my heart (I mean... her heart) would break."—Maryse's Book Blog on Motorcycle Man

About the Author

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake.

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

More About the Author

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing's changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Here it is... a book I have LONG had on my list of books to watch for. I always pre-order all Kristen's books because I can hardly stand the anticipation but this one just didn't do it for me... I didn't feel the depth of the characters like usual. The book was shorter and I felt like it just ended. I mean there was an end but things didn't feel tied up in a nice pretty bow like normal with this author's books. Colorado Mountain series has been MY FAVORITE out of all the series but wow Cookie and Ham...I just didn't buy it. I didn't feel the drama or angst like is standard. I didn't cry. I didn't break out in goose bumps. I didn't feel anything for either of these characters. I wanted MORE. More background from the both of them. The part thrown in about "Rachel" was just that...a part thrown in. It didn't add anything and it left me feeling like WHAT? and HUH? The scenes with Cookie's parents...ridiculous. She never lets her mom get out any FULL sentences so it's like Why did this conversation happen. And Nina and Max are 2 of my favorites but Nina is starting to look more like a shrew in all the books following hers.... And the names... This is standard in all of her books but I want to state that it GETS ON MY NERVES! One name for each character should do it! Graham, Ham, Reese...geez, really just UGH!... The only time I felt like crying was once the book was over and I had not experienced ANYTHING. A big no for me... After the series with Knight and the following books from the Knight series I am starting to wonder...is this the same author??? Are we pressuring these authors to put books out faster and in the process losing something valuable within the pages? I'm just sad..Read more ›

It pains me deeply to only give any thing KA 3 stars. Pains. Me. Alas, what in the world KA?? Please please please...get away from your publisher. Run. Don't walk. Save us all. I have always loved KA books. She was my #1 favorite author. I would one click away without even reading the synopsis. I would pre order without batting an eye. I wouldn't even look to see how much her books were. Now...I'm sad. So sad my heart hurts. Ever since her books were taken over by her publisher I have felt a let down deep in my soul. Her books that were always always always descriptive enough that you could imagine yourself in the scene. Her books that the sex scenes were so carefully woven you could almost feel them. Her books that the back story was so carefully laid out you knew exactly why the characters were the way they were. Her books that were meaty and long and you knew you were getting your money's worth plus some...then came the publisher. And now the sex scenes are flat, the stories are short, the insight into the characters heads is gone. All of a sudden her books are 2 days later, 3 weeks later, 2 months later...it saddens me. It breaks me heart. I want to scream and throw my kindle across the room. Then I want to ask "why KA why?" Why did you do this? I understand that with a publisher you can gain a wider audience. But with today's social media an author can be shared far and wide. Is it worth the publisher getting your name out there if you are loosing the fans that you already had? The fans that have been supporting you for YEARS devouring your stories and telling any one who would listen to go get these books?? And even the ones I've already read (Motorcycle Man being my all time fav book) they aren't the same since the publisher got ahold of them. I'm torn.Read more ›

Kristen Ashley is my favourite author and I've read the other books in this series no less than 3 times each.

This one was not in the same league as the others. I'm not sure what was missing for me, maybe I've just read her stories too many times. I liked Ham and Zara but something was missing, spark maybe? For lovers of KA there are no surprises in this book whatsoever and it was very predicable. Still I love her work and it was a fun read. I loved visiting with characters from Gnaw Bone again after The Gamble but Ham and Zara didn't feel very well developed and there was nothing to make them stand out, they were not original.

Also I hated him calling her cookie but maybe I've just read Beautiful Disaster too many times.

Worth reading but not as good as her other work.

I was really looking forward to this release, but other than getting to revisit Max and Nina's story, I didn't find much to love. The plot didn't hang together like some of her other books-it was almost like she was trying too hard to come up with obstacles (I mean really-it is a small town. Secrets are basically impossible to keep, and it isn't just one secret it is several). And, the death knell for me were the speeches. I enjoy some of the "laying it out" but this book reflects Ashley's trend of doing it way too much. I actually found myself starting to glaze over and skip pages! I'm now re-reading The Gamble just to remind myself of how Ashley became a favorite author. This book just didn't cut it for me. I really hope the next round rejuvenates the writing.
