Editorial Reviews

Review

"Beth Wiseman has written an unforgettable book that takes the reader into the heart of darkness in the most complex society in the world, Pakistan.  The Promise has many tension-filled moments laced with wonderful imagery and detail.  Do not miss this book!"
~ Jean Sasson, New York Times bestselling author of Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia

"The story of Mallory in The Promise uncovers the harsh reality American women can experience when they follow their hearts into a very different culture.  Her story sheds light on how Islamic society is totally different from the Christian marriage covenant between one man and one woman.  This book is based on actual events, and Beth reached out to me as the heartbreaking real-life story unfolded.  I salute the author's courage, persistence, and final triumph in writing a revealing and inspiring novel."
~ Nonie Darwish, bestselling author of Now They Call Me Infidel

"The Promise is an only too realistic depiction of an American young woman motivated by the best humanitarian impulses and naive trust, facing instead betrayal, kidnapping, and life-threatening danger in Pakistan's lawless Pashtun tribal regions.  But the story offers as well a reminder just as realistic that love and sacrifice are never wasted and that the hope of a loving heavenly Father is never absent in the most hopeless of situations."
~ Jeanette Windle, best-selling and award-winning author of Veiled Freedom

"Promises.  Easy to make, far easier to break.  Beth Wiseman tells a gripping story of promises, both made and broken.  Mallory's journey, along with Tate, is one for the ages.  The Promise is on my All-Star List."
~ Lis Wiehl, New York Times bestselling author

Bestselling author Beth Wiseman (The House that Love Built) encourages readers to think through their feelings about Islam, Christianity, faith, love, and what it means to help others.  Her novel will challenge, encourage, and stimulate discussion among her loyal fans and first-time readers.

More About the Author

Beth Wiseman is the best-selling author of the Daughters of the Promise series and the Land of Canaan series. Having sold over 1.3 million books, her novels have held spots on the ECPA (Evangelical Christian Publishers Association) Bestseller List and the CBA (Christian Book Association) Bestseller List. She was the recipient of the prestigious Carol Award in 2011 and 2013. She is a three-time winner of the Inspirational Readers Choice Award, and an INSPY Award winner. In 2013 she took home the coveted Holt Medallion. Her first book in the Land of Canaan series--Seek Me With All Your Heart--was selected as the 2011 Women of Faith Book of the Year. Beth is contracted with HarperCollins Christian Publishing into the year 2018, and she has published twelve novels and nine novellas to date.

As a former newspaper reporter, Beth was honored by her peers with eleven journalism awards, including first place news writing for The Texas Press Association. She has been a humor columnist for The 1960 Sun in Houston and published articles in various publications. However, writing novels is where her heart is. She left her job as a journalist in 2008 to write novels fulltime.

Beth has a deep affection for the Amish and their simpler way of life, and while she plans to continue writing Amish love stories, she is also branching out into other areas. Her first non-Amish, contemporary--Need You Now--released in April 2012 and landed on the CBA Bestseller List. She enjoyed writing the story based in a town near where she lives, and she chose another small Texas town for her next non-Amish contemporary--The House that Love Built--which is based in Smithville, the same quaint town where movies such as Hope Floats and Tree of Life were filmed.

In a daring new novel, Beth jumps way outside the box. The Promise will take readers far away from Amish Country and small Texas towns to a dangerous place on the other side of the world. Inspired by actual events, Beth believes this is the book she's been working toward for a long time.

Beth and her husband are empty nesters enjoying the country life in Texas with three dogs, two cats, and two potbellied pigs. When she's not writing, she loves to travel, paint, and enjoy time with friends and family. A very chilling reminder to be a warning to women who may be considering the very same thing as Mallory.

I knew after reading THE HOUSE THAT LOVE BUILT that author Beth Wiseman had a way of not just telling a story but drawing the reader in to feel what her characters did and experience the world through their eyes. In THE PROMISE she took that gift to another level, reminding us that no matter where we might be in the world we are never too far from God's love and protection.

THE PROMISE centers around two characters: Mallory Hammond and Tate Webber. Both of them are individuals on a mission, but when their lives take them in different directions with seemingly impossible situations, will they be able to fulfill their individual purposes and find each other again along the way.

Beth allows us to take into account the differing opinions about God: His existence and His role in the lives of mankind. Both Mallory and Tate are able to confront these in their own way throughout the book, yet at the end of the day it becomes clear that not only does God exist but He is able to do anything but fail when it comes to His promises.

Definitely a book that examines the limitations of man and the limitless power of God, THE PROMISE is all that you have come to expect from a skilled storyteller.

Wiseman takes readers on a journey of the human heart in THE PROMISE. In it, big questions are raised: What does love look like? How well do we deserve it? How far would we go to find it?

As a reader, I fell in love with Mallory’s journey. She is a character whom I just wanted to embrace by the end of it all. Seeing her discover the world reminded me of my own discovery as an adult: my own first international trip, my past relationships, my bucket list, my dreams . . . I know this was her story, but the way Wiseman crafted THE PROMISE really allows it to become each reader’s story. What a gift that is!

Wiseman’s writing will not disappoint, and there’s something for everyone in this powerfully written, tight narrative.

The Promise
Beth Wiseman
Thomas Nelson, Sep 30 2014, $15.99
ISBN 9781401685959

Teen cousins Mallory and Kelsey were more like sisters ever since they were born three days apart. However, Kels is dying and in desperate need of a kidney transplant. Extensive tests prove Mallory is the only match and she plans to donate a kidney to save the life of her BFF.

A dozen years later to fulfill a vow she made to her late cousin, Mallory informs her parents and her boyfriend Tate that she will donate a kidney to save the life of Majida, the daughter of her Pakistani pen pal Abdul. Her three loved ones fear for Mallory’s safety in Lahore, but she stubbornly travels to Pakistan. In country, Mallory reluctantly agrees to wed Abdul so Majida can come to America for treatment.

Back in the States, music teacher Tate worries about recently orphaned Verdell, a student who steals things from the bathroom and never practices the piano. Though he wishes he could help the grieving child, he has no idea how; matters turn worse when he becomes temporary guardian.

Mallory’s altruistic willingness to travel to dangerous Pakistan and also marry there seems nearly over the top of K2 for a rational person whose late cousin would call her nuts; in spite of the Afterward informing the audience her subplot is based on a real person. The Promise is a fascinating inspirational as Tate deals with a troubled tweener and Mallory struggles to help Majida and escape her own captivity. Both turn to God to guide them through their respective crisis.
