"Crouching Tiger, Forbidden Vampire" is the final (sniff, sniff) installment in the Love At Stake series by Kerrelyn Sparks. (At least for the foreseeable future). I think I actually was in shock when I read this would be the final book. However, I received the wonderful opportunity to read this book ahead of its December release date and I was thrilled to do so. This book is exactly what you expect when reading one of the books in this series. Yes, they follow a bit of a formula like any paranormal romance book does. You expect the girl to meet the guy (who is most likely a different paranormal creature than said girl) and they will bicker a little bit and flirt a lot and finally get married in the end. In the next book or two down the line you will probably hear about babies being expected or even born.
What makes this book and previous books in the series stand out from other paranormal romance novels is the wonderfully created characters. They are charming and fun. Each book guarantees a few good chuckles at the least. It is always nice to read updates about characters who starred in a previous novel. The world is so well devised that I dare any reader new to the series to not get hooked. When introducing a new tv show to a friend I always say "Give it three episodes to see if it hooks you". With the Love at Stake series I give you the first two books, but you will likely be hooked after book number one.
This story was every bit as engaging as the earlier fifteen installments. I have imagined vampire Russell starring in his own book for quite some time and he doesn't disappoint. I liked him very much. His love interest is the weretiger princess Jia, who was also quite engaging. It was fun to root for the two to get together.Read more ›

Russell, a vampire held in a coma for 39 years by the evil Master Han, and Jia, a weretiger whose family was slaughtered by Master Han, are both seeking the ultimate revenge. Russell is a loner, trying to come to grips with why he was targeted, and all of the loss he has incurred. Jia is desperate to break free from her well meaning but confining family so she can get retribution. These unlikely aliies team up, with some sexy times along the way.
I have loved this series over the years, but I think it is wise to bring it to a conclusion. For whatever reason, even though it was light and witty, with some serious moments, CT,FV just didn't grab my attention in the way past books in the series have. I liked it, don't get me wrong. All good things must, and should, come to an end, and this book provides appropriate closure to a fan-favorite series.
Looking forward to what Ms. Sparks has in store for us!

I chose this book based upon the plot blurb. I had not read any of the prior books in the series so I accept that puts me at a disadvantage. I was able to pick up enough that i feel like I could follow fairly easily. I do not recommend this as a stand alone book.
The author has a florid, pulp style that reminds me of Robert E. Howard's work. The fantasy/magic is written in a grand, colorful style that is cartoonish and unsophisticated. If you had told me that this was written in the 1930's I'd have believed it. There is a naive, juvenile quality to the action and the dialogue that has a throw back quality. In spite of that, I was fond of Jia and Russell and liked their story. Had I read the series I'd have found this a satisfying ending.
I think fans of the series will be pleased with how this all wraps up. Style wise, this book was not for me but I can see how it would appeal to others.
