One of the very first math books I started with for my self-study was Schaum's Outlines: Intermediate Algebra. Make sure to work on Schaum's Outline of Review of Elementary Mathematics, 2nd Edition (Schaum's Outline Series) and Schaum's Outline of Elementary Algebra, 3ed (Schaum's Outline Series) in that order first before taking on this book. Pedagogically, it is a very good book that effortlessly guides the reader throughout the basics of mathematics. It simply explains and explains as much of details as possible how and why one does the procedure for a certain type of problems. Schaum's Outlines: Intermediate Algebra will address the terminology from ground up. For every problem there is in the book, the solutions are provided, and half of them are fully worked out before the supplementary problems. All in all, I highly recommend Schaum's Outlines: Intermediate Algebra as the very third mathematics book and follow it up with Schaum's Outline of Trigonometry, 5th Edition (Schaum's Outline Series) before embarking on the journey of Calculus.

I'm using this to help my 10th grade daughter with Algebra.
It provides a nice additional source of extra problems and worked examples.

The paper is very flimsy so be careful.

I wish they had an electronic edition!

I ordered this for my out of town grandson who was struggling with intermediate algebra. I used to use this book for tutoring a long time ago. He said it was a big help. I don't know what there is about the way problems are explained, but it seems to connect to certain students who struggle with a live teacher no matter how patient. If Larry Gonick would write a cartoon guide to algebra, it would probably be better than this book, but for now this is the best you can do.

This a book that I would recommend to those who need additional practice with their algebra or who would like to review various subjects of algebra. This also an outstanding book for those who have a reasonably good arithmetic background who would like to teach themselves algebra. I have worked as a mathematics teacher for more than a decade and even I found some interesting presentations in this book
