The dutiful husband, I have watched the Jane Austin movies and, without admitting as much, have enjoyed them. I am not sure why, but I took a break from my space operas, and Sci-Fi thrillers and combat special ops novels and decided to try out the real Jane Austin from the source.
Tedious at times, but a real joy. The mastery of the language, the wit, the biting cultural commentary, the depth of the characters, respect for her readers - I thoroughly enjoyed it. The showdown between Elizabeth and Mrs. Catherine De Bourg is a masterpiece of understated contempt.
I won't pick up Sense and Sensibility tomorrow, but it is on my list and I am pleased that I took some time to read this fine novel.

I know I read this years ago and have seen movie versions of it but it has been awhile. It was great to read it again, the pictures are fun - though black and white in my paperwhite Kindle. If you've never read it you'll be charmed by her characters, who bring the era to life. The story is interesting and the dialog and characters are sometimes very amusing. It's easy to see why it's a classic.

This is my favorite novel of Jane Austen's, and one of my favorite novels. I asked my literature-writing instructor why I might be preferring this novel to Austen's SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, for example. He explained it in terms of classic story structure. When you have a strong male protagonist (Mr. Darcy), you need a strong heroine for counterbalance. If Elizabeth Bennett were mealy-mouthed, it just wouldn't do. There would be little dramatic tension. And we can't image Darcy falling for someone without spirit. Classic story structure requires an individual overcome a series of obstacles to reach their goal said my instructor. There are four primary outcomes to any story: they reach the goal and are happy, reach the goal and are unhappy, don't reach the goal and are unhappy or don't reach the goal and are happy anyway.
In this case, Elizabeth Bennett is in need of a husband, a good one to match her intellect and character. When she meets Mr. Darcy, although there is some initial attraction, there are the obvious obstacles: difference in social class, his remote aloofness, her annoying mother and obnoxious sisters, another suitor, lack of opportunity to meet, Elizabeth's pride etc. How they overcome these obstacles provides the dramatic tension.
When Darcy acts arrogant and superior, Elizabeth reacts strongly and lets him know of her disinterest. The dramatic tension increases as we sense underneath they are both attracted to one another and might make ideal mates if these superfluous obstacles wouldn't keep getting in the way.
Someone wisely said each story is either a David & Goliath tale (lone individual with limited resources overcomes a giant problem) or a Romeo & Juliet tale (two star-crossed lovers try to overcome obstacles to getting together.Read more ›

An honestly fantastic read. I can't wait to teach it to my upcoming class of eleventh-graders this year. Beautiful language and a set of universal themes from which any reader will surely benefit.

This is on my kindle. I had wrote a paper on the different movie version of this book for a college class. The ability to listen to it on Kindle is wonderful since I have a few learning disabilities and it helps me to be more successful in my classes. I am so grateful you have this books for kindle.
