As Charles Haddon Spurgeon preached he often looked into the eyes of hurting and bewildered parishioner and responded with words of comfort. Spurgeon's words are the words of this book. These pasages are characterized by Spurgeon's rare ability to put deep truths into simple language with rich. warm, spiritual tones. Spurgeon's words reach across the years and speak to today's hurting, struggling, bewildered, and depressed people. His answers are still valid.
If you are facing difficulties, this book is for you.

We were given this book during one of the lowest points of our life. Both my wife and I have been encouraged and comforted by this resource. In turn we have given this book to more than a dozen friends as they have encountered difficulties. All who read it seem to be strengthened and encouraged.

I was near death with a very crippling type of a rare pneumonia. I was in the hospital 23 days and 3 weeks in rehab.---on oxygen.
My step daughter gave me this book. Each day I read two pages with prayer for healing. And.......I left the rehab center with having to be connected to oxygen tubes. I truly believe that prayer and this book helped me in a healing that was no way expected by doctors.
I continue to read each passages from this book with prayer. I have shared copies of this Beside Still Waters with several individuals that are in need of comfort. And the feedback from these people in distress has been so positive. It is important to read the Preface of the book first to get a better understanding of how it came to be edited. JES

So lovely, so wonderful and so wise are the contemplations and words of the late 19th century preacher, C.H. Spurgeon. "Beside Still Waters," a brilliantly compiled devotional, is certainly no exception to this. I have to say this has helped me so much that I'm amazed. I will include a few excerpts, but they are not going to do justice to the amount of healing passages that are in this book. If you or a believer you know is going through hard times or a period of depression in their lives, then this is like a medicine.

Here are a few excerpts:
"Recently, I sat in the garden with my friend and secretary. We were in perfect health, rejoicing in the Lord's goodness. We were happy as we sat there reading the Word of God and meditating. Dare we think of being so happy? Within five days I was stricken with disabling pain, and worse, far worse, he was called upon to lose his wife. Here is our comfort: the Lord has done it. The best rose in the garden is gone. Who has taken it? The Gardener. He planted it and watched over it, and now He has taken it. Does anyone weep because of that? No! Everyone knows it is best that He should come and gather the garden's finest."

"The more He loves you, the more He will test you. I remember Samuel Rutherford writing to a lady who had lost five children and her husband, 'Oh, how Christ must love you! He would take every bit of your heart to Himself. He would not allow you to reserve any of your soul for any earthly thing.'"

"Fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ is the joy of the Lord. The habit of fellowship is the life of happiness."

"Do not trust what is seen and heard. Respect the spiritual agencies that escape the senses and are only known to faith.

This is a very encouraging book for whatever you face in life. I keep it at my bedside and have ordered many extra copies to give as gifts. You really cant go wrong with Spurgeon. This book is a blessing and conveys basic tenets of the Christian faith arranged in biblical order with lots of wisdom and insight. Rest for the weary. An uplifting and soothing balm for the soul. Thanks be to God for Spurgeon and the writings he left us! We are truly "more than conquerors" as "all things work to the good according to His purpose." Romans 8

For several years I have given this book to those who were experiencing various trials--mourning the loss of a loved one mostly, but I now have occasion to use it myself as I mourn the loss of my own dear loved one.
Charles Spurgeon is able to speak to my heart and point me 'outward and upward' instead of allowing me to linger 'inward and downward'.
It is a wonderful resource to provide hope and encouragement as we walk through our lives and dark times attempting to give glory to God.
