In The Hero (Thunder Point #3) by Robyn Carr: We find Rawley Goode giving a stranger and her three year old daughter a ride after finding them walking on the side of the road. He offers to take them wherever she would like to go, but a slow plan enters Rawley's head and it includes getting Devon and her little girl Mercy to Thunder Point.
Devon McAllister has left the compound with her daughter Mercy with nothing more than a backpack and forty dollars. Anything will be better than what she has been living through the last few years. She accepts a ride from a stranger and when he takes her to Thunder Point everything just feels right. Devon cannot believe how kind and generous everyone is. She soon finds work and eventually a small home for her and Mercy, but fear is always at the back of her mind.
Spencer Lawson finds himself instantly drawn to Devon. He doesn't let her know at first that he overheard her conversation with Rawley. Being a recent widow he isn't sure he is ready for anything more than friendship. He starts settling in as the new high school football coach. But he cannot deny the growing attraction he feels for Devon.
We also learn more about Rawley, while he was in the first two books we never really knew to much about him. I have to admit I was impressed where his back history went. Also enjoyed a few laughs regarding his finances. We also learned what a true friend he can be and defiantly someone you would want in your corner. I loved the direction his character went in this book.
Another thing I love about Robyn Carr books is how the community comes together almost like a big family. We see this again in this book, along with a handful of friends helping to make Devon feel welcomed.Read more ›

The Thunder Point novels do not begin to rival the Virgin River series but they are a good afternoon's entertainment. The first book entitled THE WANDERER is excellent and introduces Ben Cooper, Rawley, Sarah and Langston. Without these individuals and the continued story of their lives, THE HERO would have lacked real substance with the exception of the expansion of the character of Rawley whom we had some to see a just a weird, non-communicative man. Obviously, the previous stories gave the wrong impression and skills he demonstrated in the effort to save the child from the cult were heartwarming and surprising. The story of Devon and Spencer was sweet but it lacked the intensity you have with Ben and Sarah. Because I am a Robyn Carr fan, I expected more. This was just a short story in novel form. Interesting but not spectacular!!

I liked this book much better than the last. I was able to buy three days ago at my local grocery store (they don't pay attention to release dates). I still found the first half of this book very slow moving. I loved the characters Devon and Spencer and more if the doctor Scott, old vet Rawley and the rest of the past characters. I think the reason I keep buying this full price series is the characters just come alive off the page and I feel like I am in this beautiful seaside town. This book started to pick up with Devon and Spencer's romance and was interesting with Devon coming from a cult like commune. The first half of this book was just slow reading. It had a good ending and thank goodness none of the teenage drama from the last book. It sounded like at the end there will be more to the series and I hope so. I do recommend reading this book for the scenery and the town alone.

Devon escapes, on foot, the `religious' commune where she has been living for the past couple of years with her young daughter, Mercy. With very little money and food she has no real idea where she is headed and she finds an unlikely hero in the curmudgeonly Rawley from previous Thunder Point books. He picks the two up and takes them back to Thunder Point and under the guise of them being his long lost relatives he helps Devon get on her feet.
Spencer, the newly transplanted Thunder Point resident, is immediately drawn to the feminine newcomer. And even though his wife just died 3 months ago and he knows both he and Devon have a lot of baggage they are carrying around, he can't stay away from her.
I love Robyn Carr and I love both her Virgin River and Thunder Point Series. But this book just wasn't my favorite. It's not bad, not at all. It just had some characteristics that rub me the wrong way. I love the generosity and sense of community she creates with the way they all look out for one another and lend a hand - even to strangers. However, in this book that do-gooder attitude turned corny and cheesy one too many times for me.
The other turn off for me was the ending. Everything comes to a head in the last 60 pages...Both Devon's past and present implode and the resolution was unbelievable and, frankly, ridiculous. I read fiction because I like living in the land of make believe, but this ending had me rolling my eyes at the absurdity.
It may sound like I hated it, but truly, I didn't. I really liked Spencer and Devon and their kids. I liked all the updates and side stories going on with the characters I have come to know and love in the previous books. She kept me entertained and has me looking forward to the next story and wondering who it is going to star. No, this wasn't my favorite book by her, but it was still well worth the read.
