Editorial Reviews

Review

“Filled with wit, humor, and scintillating sex scenes. Readers will be drawn in to the story by the hint of love that is hidden in the depths of Alexander’s jaded heart.” —Publishers Weekly

“Stuart’s first-rate conclusion to the Scandal at the House of Russell trilogy pairs a darkly passionate hero with a beautiful heroine, and they plumb emotional depths beyond their physical exteriors.” —RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars

About the Author

Anne Stuart has proven herself a master of the romance genre. With forty years of experience sweeping readers off their feet, she’s topped multiple bestseller lists, including those of the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly. She’s touched on almost every subgenre, from gothic to historical to romantic suspense to contemporary and beyond. Her recent award-winning series include the historical romances of the House of Rohan and her ever-suspenseful Ice titles. With multiple RITA awards and a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Romance Writers of America, she’s continuing to give her readers more of the stories that they love to fall in love with.

When not spinning yarns of romance, Anne enjoys quilting, listening to rock ’n’ roll, and spending time with her devoted and darling husband in their Northern Vermont home.

More About the Author

I've been writing since the dawn of time. A child prodigy, I made my first professional sale to Jack and Jill Magazine at the age of 7, for which I received $25 (admittedly my father worked for the publisher). Since then I've written gothics, regencies, romantic suspense, historical romance, series romance -- anything with sex and violence, love and redemption. I misbehave frequently, but somehow have managed to amass lots of glittering prizes, like NYT, PW and USA Today bestseller status, Lifetime Achievement Award from the Romance Writers of America, and a decent smattering of Romantic times and RITA awards.
I live on a lake in Northern Vermont with my incredibly fabulous husband. My two children have flown the coop, but the three cats do their best to keep us from being lonely.
In my spare time I quilt and play around with wearable art, and the rest of the time I write write write. Apparently women of a certain age get a rush of creativity, and I'm currently enjoying it. Too many stories to write, not enough hours in the day.

The secondary characters are also fun and endearing.

This story reads remarkably well as a stand alone novel even though I am sure that the conclusion of this book ties up a few loose ends from the first two books.

This book made me feel happy and at a page count around 250 it is a light and easy kind of read.

This is a fluff filled, cotton candy, rainy day with a cup of hot chocolate read AND marshmallows kind of read. The hero is dark, misunderstood and guarded. The heroine is likable, flirtatious and somewhat silly at times. I loved the play on words used and laughed more than once at the different scenarios that happened. This book made me feel happy and at a page count around 250 it is a light and easy kind of read. Note: This is the third book of a series but I hadn’t read the first two and didn’t have any issues. This can be read as a stand-alone.

Sophie Russell and her sisters have been cast out of society since the death of their father and the embezzlement that he was accused of losing everything they had. Convinced that the true culprit is one of her father’s associates Sophie’s sisters have left her to investigate two of the men they think most suspect of the crime. Sophie has been left on the family estate living in the cottage of her former nanny and spying on the last suspect Viscount Alexander Griffiths from afar. The best part of her day is watching the swim he takes every day.

"The linen of his underdrawers clung to him, outlining that part that a proper young lady was supposed to pretend didn’t exist until it got slammed into her on her wedding night."

With his new Viscount Title and inheritance Alexander has women falling all over him in hopes of marriage. Since his first marriage didn’t go so well he is determined to stay a bachelor, but a man has needs. To solve this problem he has ordered an escort from London to come be his mistress. Through a misunderstanding when Sophie takes on the position as cook for the estate he believes her to be the mistress he has ordered and the double entendre fun begins.

This was definitely a very original story. Stuart took me on a wild ride that I couldn`t (and didn`t want to) escape from. I will admit, I was a little worried for the first half dozen chapters, wondering where the story was going, but when the story took off Stuart and her characters had my complete attention. This world was brought to life in a vividly realistic manner, taking readers back in time. Lust, suspense, and romance all vie for a place in this remarkable tale.

This is one of those remarkable stories that is taken to another level by the characters. Stuart develops a remarkable couple for us to fall in love with. Their antics are endearing and make them very human. The misconceptions that they have about one another are heightened by the fact that only the reader knows it. It’s a heady mix when brought together.

As a whole, this was an endearing tale that I could barely get enough of. I’ll definitely be re-reading it & looking into more works by this author.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Sophie's family becomes destitute when her father, a wealthy shipping magnate dies in a suspicious accident & his wealth from his successful business mysteriously disappears. Her 2 older sisters try to discover who was responsible for destroying their father (coincidentally they have 3 suspects) & Sophie decides to go back to their previous home & live in a cottage on the ground estates with their former nanny.

When Sophie's nanny has an accident & is taken to a nursing home, in desperation Sophie goes to the Main House with a vague idea of seeking employment. She is met by the butler who immediately takes her for the new cook that they have been expecting which Sophie happily falls in with (being an excellent cook & loving it). The comedy of mistaken identity goes even further with the Viscount who takes her for the courtesan/mistress that he had contracted for from London.

I loved the book! Wonderful writing & storytelling. The author's style of writing is lovely. Fluid & totally carries you along with characters that you immediately feel connected with. Sophie is by no means perfect. She's rather vain. She's beautiful & knows it. She plans to marry a rich, titled gentleman. She still comes across as someone totally likable. Her relationship with Alexander is so amusing! She's quite innocent in a lot of ways & their conversations are full of double entendres which Sophie doesn't realize at all. She's talking about cooking while he takes everything she says in a sexual context (delicious, satisfying his appetite - you get the drift!).

Alexander is totally swoonworthy. The brooding, sardonic hero who, when he falls for Sophie falls hard.

There's a lovely cast of secondary characters - Alexander's butler/valet Dickens is particularly lovable.

This historical series is lighter in tone than Stuart’s more recent contemporaries. The heroes are not as dark as the prototypical Stuart hero and the story overall has more humorous elements. NEVER MARRY A VISCOUNT is a concluding story that seeks to wrap up the murder mystery that the three Russell sisters have been attempting to solve. After her two older sisters have gone off and married the prior two suspects, it is left to the youngest sister to seek out the last suspect that the sisters have.

THE STORY: Sophia Russell is the youngest Russell sister and the one her older sisters believe is the most helpless. Having been left by her two older sisters with their old nanny, Sophia has been spending her time watching the local Viscount, Alexander Griffiths swimming in the pool at his house. Viscount Griffiths is the final suspect that the sisters have as to who stole from the family company and murdered their father. The sisters having been left penniless, they devised a scheme to enter the households of their suspects as servants and discover their secrets. Sophia already knows something about Viscount Griffiths. He is believed to have killed his wife. Sophia decides to become a cook in his household. Unfortunately for Sophia, Alexander believes that Sophia has been sent to occupy a different position – that of his new mistress.

OPINION: I enjoyed this book. It nicely wrapped up the story that spanned the three books in the series. This book also had the best relationship in the series. Sophia is intrigued by Alexander from the first time that she sees him. Her voyeuristic sessions watching Alexander create an intimacy between the characters even before they have met.
