Well.
I thought that KGI couldn't get any worse after After the Storm. I was mistaken.
This book is extremely repetitive and boring. It's actually horrible.
Let's start with the cons first, shall we?
Cons:
I understand that the author wants to catch up readers on characters of other books in the series, but it would be nice if she spent half as much time on developing the plot of /this/ book as she did on rehashing old ones. To make it worse, she repeats the same phrases over and over to describe events. It's seriously like phrases are copied and pasted into the next book. That's not good writing. It's laziness.
Ms. Banks also repeated several phrases about the characters that I made me want to throw my book, and it was a gift. If I had to read about Eden's beauty or inspiring sunshine in others again I would want to hurl. I got it. She's beautiful, she's a bottle of sunshine, all warmth and rainbows. No need to repeat that over and over, and if you need to do so, use a thesaurus to at least say it differently.
The characters were pretty bad too. I'm sorry, but as much as I wanted to like Swanny, I found that I couldn't. His insecurities about his scars are grounded in reality but his shame about his face and self-consciousness didn't mesh well with his pride for them. At one point, he said they serve as a reminder that he survived something terrible and one would think that this would allow him to be able to cope better. But no, it doesn't. And I was very confused because he said he wasn't vain enough to consider plastic surgery, but was ashamed of the scars the entire book. It was like a never-ending circle of him not believing someone as "beautiful" as Eden should be with him because he's "hideous.Read more ›

Here are the rules:
Every time Swanny has angst about his scars - take a drink.
Every time Swanny tells Eden he is not good enough for her - take a drink.
Every time Eden apologises for being too forward - take a drink.
Every time Eden calls Swanny beautiful - take a drink.
Guaranteed drunkenness by the time you are half way through the book.
So, these aspects made the book feel repetitive and a bit like some pages had just been recycled. Another not so good aspect was the first 7 or 8 chapters. They dragged on a bit and were basically a rehash of previous books and about how great KGI is. It wasn't until the 7th or 8th chapter that the characters even met.
In saying all this the book wasn't BAD it just wasn't GREAT. I liked the plot (I always like Maya Bank's plots), I liked Eden as a character and I even liked Swanny even though I wanted to tell him to man up and have some confidence. I LOVED the fact that Skylar was featured more than in previous books and fleshed out as a character and I loved that Guy Hancock showed a human side that was kind of sweet. Just putting it out into the universe - I think Skylar and Hancock would make an awesome couple and should have a book ;)
So, while the book did drag a bit and felt repetitive, the relationship between Swanny and Eden was really sweet, which is why I am giving it three stars.

Maya Banks' work has started to hurt my head, my love for an alpha male and my pocketbook. I'm not sure how many more books I can purchase looking for the Maya Banks of yore. Her new mass market appeal has been at the sacrifice of well plotted storylines and engaging characters. Maya, if you're reading this, please return my $4.46.
When Day Breaks can be summed up in two words: vaginal soreness. An author actually wrote this outside of a health pamphlet context and a big, bad, kick ass man uttered the words. My mind literally shut down after that line. This is the only romance where I didn't want the H/h to touch in any way after their first night together. Almost as bad as the post-coital care instructions was the pre-devirginizing birth control discussion. It's 2014, you can be on birth control without being a slut. There's no need to go into talks about irregular periods. It's also 2014 and there are deadly diseases out there, yet the virgin takes Swanny's word for it that he's devoid of disease. If I wanted fantasy, I'd read about unicorns.
Eden was beautiful but vague. I actually read more than once how her breasts were too large for conventional runway work. She is so good natured and down to earth except when she has a personal shopper at her whim and when she's not purchasing VIP dinner cruise tickets with early boarding. And seriously, I'm suppose to believe that someone who earned the nickname of "Big Eddie" would not avenge his wife's murder immediately. Do you just get the "Big Eddie" tag willy-nilly? Onto the siblings, Ryker and Raid.....Did we run out of normal "R" names. One is named for a prison and the other pest repellent. Were these boys not loved and wanted? I had to rename them Bobby and Rick just to get through the book.Read more ›

Can't believe this came from Maya Banks. Truely the worst book ever I skipped pages and pages of dribble. You make Swanny into a chick and go on and on adnosium. I am a huge fan but this book I would return if I could :(
