This is book 8 in the Chesapeake Diaries. It was another “just OK” book in the series for me because like book 7, I found it not as interesting as the earlier entries. My issue was there seemed to be tangents of information that were boring and not necessary to the story. At times it felt like I met up with a former coworker that drones on and on about every detail of what they have been doing. I had to force my attention to get back into the story. With so many volumes, there are a lot of characters. If the author needed to meet a page count, I would have preferred a refresher of some of the prior characters stories and bringing us up to speed on their status. Some the author just mentioned and I recognized their names but couldn't for the life of me remember their story. Instead I was given details of all the galleries that Carly owned, and places that Ford kayaked well beyond what their character development needed.
Conclusions
I still recommend people read the books from this series in order, especially if the story continues as more as observing life in the community style book and just casually throwing out names of people we've met in other books.
I still do not understand why the author has gone to pensive observations. She had created the perfect device for catching us up with the diary entries and I wish it were used more if she is going to barely mention prior main characters.
I will read the next in the series because I like the town and prior characters we've met, but I am still hoping for more substance, also because I tend to not want to miss anything. The biggest reason I will continue is because I borrow the books and do not PAY for them.

Having read all the Chesapeake Diaries Series by Mariah Stewart, always look forward to catching up with Grace (who knows all there is to know about everyone in town), other favorites, and the charming quaint town of St. Dennis, for #8, “On Sunset Beach.”
Grace starts out her diary entry, excited about her son Ford making his way back to Virginia to meet with someone, after being away with his military career in Africa, who is still having issues with his haunted experience and needless to say, he is looking for a hideaway to escape, not to be charming.
Of course, there is always so many people which come from the big city to this small quaint town (wow, they attract some talent here). The main character, being Carly (a friend of Ellie-from “The Long Way Home”) who owns an art gallery in New York, and will be displaying previously unknown works by a prominent 21st century painter. However, she is not thrilled when she has to move the premier of her new exhibition from Manhattan to St. Dennis.
Of course, Ford is helping out with the newspaper and has to interview Carly and the two definitely do not hit it off in the beginning. Ford sees her charm and outgoing nature, and of course he has no personality, yet Carly finds a way to dig beyond the rough exterior to warm his heart.
A light heartwarming beach read - I would recommend to fans of Debbie Macomber, Sherryl Woods, and Susan Mallery. Each book can be a standalone within the Chesapeake Diaries’ series; however, nice to read them all and catch up with a few of the longtime residents such as the famous Dallas, Clay/Lucy, Dan, etc.
As usual, Grace always ends with her famous diary entry, recapping the town’s progress, and the gossip of family and friends, as well as future plans, hopes and dreams --until next time.

Review: Will an urbanite gallerist and a cynical soldier find love in Mariah Stewart's On Sunset Beach?
Combine the story of an art historian / gallerist who's discovered a priceless cache of heretofore unknown paintings by an early-20th-century female artist, with the return of a disillusioned soldier, a hometown boy who's served for too many years it seems as a support for UN Peacekeepers in a Central African country and you will have a bit of magic to read. Yes, you guessed right, I'm describing On Sunset Beach, the newest book in Mariah Stewart's The Chesapeake Diaries series and one that I couldn't wait to read.
I so enjoyed Stewart's depiction of Carly Summit. It was all spot on and made me ever so wistful about not "using" my advanced degree in art history . . . but all the more appreciative of the realistic and sometimes hilarious descriptions of Carly's life as a very well regarded gallerist, her research, and her curatorial work.
Another reason I adored the character of Carly was that she's so unabashedly positive. She happily creates the finest lemonade from a serving of life's lemons that might have other people tearing out their hair. In all probability, it is this positive energy that is the major draw for Ford's troubled soul. A good life lesson for all of us to send out positive vibes, rather than dwelling in negativity - and some magic may occur. Yes, a bit of the "Law of Attraction" right here on the Chesapeake.
But what is urbanite Carly doing in St. Dennis to begin with? In book seven, At the River's Edge, Carly and her BFF Ellie Ryder discovered a cache of Caroline Ellis' paintings, that will be the focal point of the exhibition, in Ellie's attic.
