Book Description

Even in the fathomless depths of the underworld and the bleak chambers of a damaged heart, the bonds of love can heal…or destroy.

He holds the ability to annihilate souls in the palm of his hand. He commands the respect of the most dangerous of demons and the most powerful of angels. He can seduce and dominate any female he wants with a mere look. But for all Azagoth’s power, he’s bound by shackles of his own making, and only an angel with a secret holds the key to his release.

She’s an angel with the extraordinary ability to travel through time and space. An angel with a tormented past she can’t escape. And when Lilliana is sent to Azagoth’s underworld realm, she finds that her past isn’t all she can’t escape. For the irresistibly sexy fallen angel known as Azagoth is also known as the Grim Reaper, and when he claims a soul, it’s forever…

Let me preface this review by saying I'm not typically a fan of novellas. At all. I don't think there's enough room to really build a solid story. Plus, when it's Larissa Ione? I'm greedy. So, so greedy. I want a 500 page book so I can live in her world longer. Knowing this was a novella, I was hesitant. Let it be said I'm an idiot.

Azagoth was wicked hot. He was broody, snarky, snarly and downright domineering, just like we've seen him before. But the release of emotions he experienced away from Sheoul was pretty awesome. To see him have that mantle of darkness lifted and see a little of who he was before he became the Grim Reaper? I loved him before. Now? I'd totally thumb wrestle Lilliana for him. And I'd cheat. Bad.

Lilliana showed great character growth through the novella which thrilled me. Such a great thing to see a strong character grow stronger, and Larissa Ione is the master at writing female leads with a backbone and a hard right hook. I love her for it and always will.

The chemistry between the two was off the chain. From the kisses to the down and dirty, it was all perfect. It reflected the right level of emotional investment for me at each stage so it never felt gratuitous or novel. Frankly? It left me needing a cigarette...and I don't smoke.

One final thought. The way Lilliana loved Azagoth in his altered form? You'll know the scene on the beach when you get to it. Total melt moment.

Thank you, Larissa, for giving me the first novella I've ever read where I didn't feel cheated out of the rest of the story. You're the master, love. Wear the title with pride.

Very Brief Synopsis - Azagoth has had his fill of being baby-daddy to all of the Memitim, for several different reasons. He demands a Mate from the Heaven Realm, instead. Lilliana is given a choice, if you can call it that. Submit to being Azagoth's mate or be subjected to a menial job in heaven for all eternity. Of course, Rafael gives her an out, being as the angels in this world always have an agenda. Lilliana takes the mate route with an eye on the out clause Rafael is dangling.

What worked for me - Well, it's Larissa Ione, so you know the writing is ever so sharp and engaging. The dialogue is smart and funny. I adored Azagoth. He isn't what I was expecting. His sense of aloneness was so haunting, and his joy when Lilliana took him away from Sheoul -gra was breathtaking. His despair when things go...badly...brought tears to my eyes. Loved, loved, loved Azagoth. So much.

Lilliana isn't what you might expect from a Heavenly Host. She's pretty snarky and not exactly passive. Our girl can hold her own. She is trying to work the angle Rafael wanted her to, but quickly starts to rethink that position. Something about Azagoth touches her. She sees what Azagoth tries so hard to hide. Lilliana breaks something precious to him in a fit of anger, then works doggedly to fix her mistake, regardless of whether Azagoth will forgive her or not. I admired her determination to set things right. Great shero, period!

These two found, in each other, acceptance and peace. And some smoking hawt smexy times!!

What didn't work as well - Can't think of one thing. I loved this novella! (Really long novella, thank you, Ms. Ione!)

Bottom line - If you are a Demonica fan, this is a must-read-right-now. So good! And can we please get a Hades story?!? Maybe with Cat?

I'm generally always hesitant to read novella's because of the fact that authors tend to have such a short amount of time to make the romance between the male read and female lead believable. While I enjoyed this novella. I didn't think it was spectacular.

Now, before you click the thumbs down button you haters, just know that I am a HUGE Larissa Ione fan. I've loved every single book she has released (except for her Moonbound Clan series, that... not so much). Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed this novella. And it gave me the fix that I was wanting, because I love the Demonica and Lords of Deliverance series. Novella's are just harder to pull off because you have to build your world, build a believable love story and factor in emotions and drama at the same time.

Anyway. Like I said. I DID enjoy the story. It was just a few things that fell flat for me. The romance between Azagoth and Lilliana was amazingly rushed. Love after a few days doesn't really do it for me. And that's what we got here. I loved the attraction between the two leads. But love? Meh. Not so much. So that was a hard pill for me to swallow. Although, the chemistry and connection between them was believable and off the charts!

Azagoth. Dear sweet lord. I have been waiting for his story for SO SO long. I was really excited when Larissa announced that he would be getting his own story. But his character in this novella was not what I was expecting. He was very... soft. And while it was nice to see this side of him, in the other books, the Azagoth that we know and love is a dark, sexy, powerful, brooding alpha male hottie mc'hot pants and in this book he just seemed so different from how Larissa had originally portrayed him. I dunno.
