I have long been a Dee Henderson fan, her romantic suspense novels surpass most any other author I have read. So I always jump at the chance to read her new releases in hopes of discovering a new favorite. Unspoken, something of a sequel to Full Disclosure, was released on Oct. 1.
Bryce Bishop is a successful rare coin dealer, but he’s bored…at least until Charlotte steps into his life with an offer he can’t refuse. As he helps Charlotte sell a collection of coins she inherited, Bryce begins to realize there is much more to this mysterious woman than he understands.
For most of her life, Charlotte has refused to speak about the one event that shaped her — four long years of captivity after her kidnapping. But her carefully constructed world begins to change as Bryce works his way into her heart. But there are still unanswered questions about the kidnappers — questions that could put her loved ones at risk.
Unspoken is an interesting tale of a woman’s deep hurts finally being overcome by a loving God and a godly man. As always, Henderson includes interesting details about little known subjects — like rare coins. Her writing itself is intelligent and each sentence well constructed. But the plot of Unspoken often lagged, and while I liked the characters, there wasn’t enough action to keep the novel moving forward, and instead it regularly lost my interest.
I was disappointed that I was never really given the chance to get to know Charlotte. Not only was she portrayed as guarded in the novel, her character was also guarded from the reader. While I understand how this could happen, Henderson dealt with a similar character in Danger in the Shadows, but there she still managed to allow the reader into Sara’s heart and mind.Read more ›

Unspoken was to me, in a word, painful. To go from the top of her genre in Christian lit, to "painful" tells me we've perhaps seen the best of what Dee Henderson has to offer, and that's depressingly sad. Considering how much I loved Dee's first two series (especially the O'Malley series, which should have been turned into a TV series), it's painful for me to write this about her recent book. Actually, her last 2 books.
Unspoken left me with all kinds of questions: What happened to Henderson's passion? We know her to be a highly intelligent writer, which I love, yet each book written since the O'Malley series has contained less and less passion...from the author. Considering her "smarts," what was with the 200+ pages of coin details - surely she knew 90% of her reader's would skip, skim or loose interest. Asking that question leads to, Why have her editor and publisher chosen to turn a blind eye? And why am I sensing an overall sadness and heaviness from Henderson's last two books that I didn't feel in the earlier series, even given their subject matter? I respectfully ask: Will the real Dee Henderson please stand up?

I have to respectfully disagree with most of the other reviewers. Dee Henderson is one of my favorite authors and I own all of her books. This is the first time that I haven't been able to force myself to finish one of her books. Part One (almost two hundred pages) was all about a coin collection and selling it for millions. Plus lectures on giving to charity. When I got to Part Two and it started discussing a requirement to marry in order to inherit, I had to stop reading. Such a provision in a will is unenforceable and therefore doesn't create any kind of tension in the story as intended. Sorry, but there was no chemistry between the main characters and this read more like a treatise than a novel. I didn't even care enough about what happened to the characters to skim to the end.
