Kimberly has major problems! A runaway drug addicted prostitute for a mother, an alcoholic father, a cheating fiance, a crazy twin brother, miscellaneous cousins, an obsessed lover that happens to be her boss and the District Attorney put all of them together and that is just the beginning of Kimberly’s problems. When you add in a white boyfriend that is also an Irish Mafia Boss you begin to see Kimberly Kind is not an ordinary Assistant DA! This book is like Law and Order meets House Wives of Atlanta on steroids.
The worst thing about being a black lawyer is that everyone you know thinks you’re their lawyer and they can call you about anything at any time. And while I’m sure that happens to all lawyers-white, yellow, brown, and beige-because I’m black it’s almost a guarantee that whatever my people need me for at whatever time is likely so ghetto and/or hood, there’s simply no way I can tack my signature to anything have to do with the situation.
So when Kimberly’s twin baby brother calls and asks for a breakfast date she knows that he wants something. What Kent wants is yet to be discovered but it could have something to do with his trip to South America.
“Negro, please. You’re ordering mimosas when I’ve never seen you drink anything but Heineken. You asked me out to brunch in Hell’s Kitchen when you never leave Harlem. And you’re being all nice to me. You have to want something. Just say it.” I sat back and looked at little bits of skin peeling off Kent’s forehead.
When Kimberly meets up with her girls at a bar called Damaged Goods she finds herself talking with a white man named King.Read more ›

My title says it all: I really tried to finish! I really did, but honestly it was hard for me to even get half way through. The written language of this story was just too much for me. I appreciate authors who use proper language in books but the written word here is just so ridiculous that it just killed the story for me. At certain times I had no idea what the author was trying to say, such as using "Sho tan". ?? What tan???
I gave up. Please understand that this is my personal preference and another reader might just enjoy the language and really love this book.

From reading the blurb for this title, I was expecting a steamy romance: what I got was an edgier story: more urban and street than romance and sexy. You have to be aware of that before picking up this title, the story does not unfold simply or gently, and the characters are often more dressing for action and ‘name dropping’ of cultural references than developed with a clear sense of purpose.
Told in the first person point of view, Kimberly alternates between sober and out of control, sweet and hateful, and often utterly incapable or unwilling to take account for her part in anything. Giving me a reason to continue on with the story was the fact that I could dislike, roll my eyes and even want to shake her throughout the book: when the walls start to crack and the reasons behind her many issues start to come forward, her behavior becomes more understood, although still not acceptable.
“King”, is her dalliance: not quite love interest as she isn’t capable of love, but sexy enough to bring a yum to your brain as he swaggers in and provides her some escape and security. There is more to his reluctance to engage himself wholly with her: his own issues and the added element of some burned bridges that Kimberly didn’t realize she had torched kept the potential for a ‘quiet romantic plot’ completely out of reach. They had some sizzling moments – but her calculation and lack of self-awareness didn’t add to their chemistry.
Overall, the story was ambitious, although never quite hitting the mark of a romance as most readers would expect. There isn’t a true sense of love, although by the end of the story you have characters to wish well, if not necessarily seeing them on a path to a happily ever after.Read more ›

So, this is definitely a hot, steamy novel. Not a book you want your youngster or for that matter your teenager reading, but that goes for most of the books I read. I think perhaps fans of Fifty Shades (which I am NOT) are not going to love Hold Me in Contempt. For one thing, Kim (Kiki Mimi) would have flat kicked Christian's butt. And there is nothing remotely virginal or timid about Kimberly Kind.
This was a romance (of sorts) but I saw it more as very gritty chick lit and a love story. These are very different things in my book. I was happily surprised by the quality of the writing. I will admit to reviewing this book mainly out of curiosity. I had heard Wendy speak on the Fifty Shades phenomenon and her opinion on the books. I was interested in seeing where she could take a couple looking for love. Well, now I know. If she had published this under a pen name, I think it would be a pop sensation. Her celebrity in this case may be hurting her in this case. While I probably would not have jumped so quickly on the book, I would have read it, and enjoyed it. It was very current and very, very different from anything I've read.
I pictured Gabrielle Union as Kim. She just worked in my head and I think she and King would have absolutely GORGEOUS kids. She was smart, ambitious, with a strong moral compass, and a great sense of loyalty to her family. She wasn't perfect though and slipped up sometimes. Sometimes in a major way. This book is written, I believe for those who have themselves slipped and are hoping for an HEA or least as close as they can possibly get. In other words, people need books that tell them love is not only for the perfect, and sometimes love isn't the pretty ending we read about in typical romances.Read more ›
