Advance praise for People I Want to Punch in the Throat

People I Want to Punch in the Throat is so good that it’ll make you want to adopt all the cats in the world. I’m not sure about the correlation, but it’s that good. It should come with a warning.”—Jenny Lawson, author of Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

“Jen Mann has an amazing way of telling stories that will make you cringe and burst out laughing at the same time. From swinger parties to racist toddlers, she makes the suburbs unbelievably funny.”—Karen Alpert, author of I Heart My Little A-Holes

“Jen Mann says the things we’re all too afraid to say. Her honest and hilarious writing style reminds me of David Sedaris and Tina Fey.”—Robin O’Bryant, author of Ketchup Is a Vegetable: And Other Lies Moms Tell Themselves

“Jen Mann’s shrewd and unrelenting assault on the absurdity of suburban life is an honest peek into the occasional nightmare that is part of living the American dream. I love Jen. I wish she was my neighbor. It’s so refreshing to know that I’m not the only one who wants to punch almost everyone in the f***ing throat.”—Nicole Knepper, author of Moms Who Drink And Swear

When I ordered this book, I was expecting a funny book about people the author didn't like. OK, there is some of that, but this is much more. It is an autobiographical account of quite a few years of a family's life. It is told in a very funny and original style, and I really liked the way the author told the stories. I will give a warning. There is a lot of language used in this book. The author says she has no filter, and I can see that coming through loud and clear, so if you are offended by fairly common use of expletives, this might not work for you. Aside from that, I recommend this book very highly. It is a very fun read, and I zipped through it in a day. Good stuff!

I first met the People I Want to Punch in the Throat blog when she went viral with her honest, and hilarious piece about the Elf on the Shelf. I fell deeper in love with the writing when I read Spending the Holidays with People I want to Punch in the Throat. Years have passed and I kept up with Jen and her wonderful anthologies. This book, Competitive Crafters.... is the best one yet. I laughed out loud many times. Some of the things so outlandish, you feel like it's satire. However, I also live in the suburbs and I know it is true. You really can't make this stuff up. I identify with Jen and losing her innocence to suburbia, as well as the ONE time you leave home in your jammies is the ONE time you are asked to get out of your car in front of the perfect Barbie Doll Mean Girl Moms. If you are not perfect, but a mom or a person who likes to laugh, it is a must read. I have read it twice already. It reads quickly and even the busiest of moms can find time to read it. Keep it in your car and read it while waiting for your kids.

Jen Mann's hilarious tales are a journey into the game of social dodgeball that is 21st century life. Don't let the "suburban scourges" part of the title fool you, I've lived in nothing but major cities and felt right at home. Anyone who has ever been anxious about her spouse, neighbors or kids will recognize herself in this book, or at least most of the time -- there are definitely a few surprises! In People I Want to Punch in the Throat Jen is often the only one who sees that the emperor is wearing no clothes -- the lone sane voice in a world gone mad. Sometimes she takes no prisoners and sometimes she takes a seat and has a cookie. At once brash and vulnerable, Jen's voice is funny and real -- the ally we all need in our quest to coexist with the the villains of parenthood.

I was expecting to laugh while reading stories about people Jen would like to punch in the throat, but what I got was laughing hard and often at her frank humorous outlook on her own life stories. I'm very happy that I read this book because her outlook is contagious. Although I read this book yesterday, I woke up smiling this morning and feeling a little bit more courageous about life. I feel more ready to laugh; laughter is the best medicine and a great gift to the reader.

People I Want to Punch in the Throat is a collection of essays by the author of the blog by the same name, Jen Mann. These essays are written with an edgy, clever sense of humor and they cover topics that we can all relate to, such as meeting a spouse or dealing with the crazy army of room moms at an elementary school.

I admit, I wasn't too sure how I'd like this book. It's true that the title is hilarious, and honestly who doesn't love a book with a cupcake on the cover? I was nervous about how I would "get" the humor of things I haven't necessarily experienced, like raising children. I am happy to say that I had nothing to worry about. Jen and I have the same snarky, often overlooked type of sense of humor that made me want to buy her a drink so I can hear more of these stories first hand.

Each "chapter" is an essay, so it tells another separate story. Plus, the headings/titles are also hilarious in and of themselves. Mann writes about things that are true to life, and yet somehow seem ridiculous. I think we all have that one friend where we think "wow, that would only happen to you." Mann is that friend, and the results are hilarious. I believe that's part of why this book is so humorous- because it's nonfiction. All of these shenanigans and conversations really happened, and that makes it just so much better. I definitely laughed out loud more than once, and I would have to pause my reading to share a quote with my girlfriend. I was drawn in by the tale of her meeting her husband in an AOL chat room in the good ole dial up days, and I was hooked for the rest of the ride.

A lot of these quotes came from her daughter, who sounds like the cutest little bundle of diva-sass.

This breezy memoir is very funny and readable. I thought it was going to be more of a diatribe rant on social mores than about parenting. I don't have kids so the angsty segments about playdates and other children's mothers fell somewhat flat with me. The drama of working from home also was a miss for me; first world problems.

I do think Mann has a very keen humorist sensibility and I was particularly engaged with her chapter on racism in children. I read the book in one sitting so it just flies by with great pacing. There is definitely foul language here so if that offends this is not the book for you.

I am sure suburban parents will love this book and find a lot of common ground humor.
