Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Well, there it is; I've tried to make Darcy everything Austen represented: smart, loyal, and dedicated to doing what is right, rather than what is easy. I think at least I have him where he was supposed to be, when he was supposed to--perhaps he is even close to who he was supposed to be; in any event, I have enjoyed taking the journey with him. Thank you to everyone who has taken it along with me, and a special thanks to those of you who have deigned to leave a comment. To all my friends in the Austen online community, it has been a joy to meet and get to know you.

From the Back Cover

Following Miss Elizabeth Bennet's refusal of his proposal in Hunsford, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy returned to London greatly disturbed in mind; angry, hurt, confused, he could neither understand nor accept what had happened. But during a stay on his uncle's estate, his aunt helped him to finally see the truth, and how much in error he had been throughout.

But this knowledge did little to heal his heart, and so he determined it best to get on with his life, and try to forget. A chance meeting, however, set this plan aside, and he found himself once more under her power to charm him. But between him and his goal of winning her lay many miles of travel, the rescue of a family from infamy, knife-wielding footpads, and the recognition that his heart would never be his again.

This lovingly crafted companion to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice will give her fans a feeling of home-coming, and a chance to see this beloved story from a new perspective, all the while immersed in the endearing world of Regency England Austen so masterfully created.

More About the Author

Stan Hurd is a Ph.D. neurochemist who currently occupies himself writing, teaching fencing and Karate, and polishing samurai sword blades. He was introduced to Jane Austen's works late in life, but became immediately captivated by the unlabored beauty of her prose. Having read one of the many adaptations written to extend the story of "Pride and Prejudice", while he was delighted to be back in that world, he found the exclusively female perspective of the author was at times intrusive; since he could not let himself complain if he did not attempt it himself, he set out to write "Darcy's Tale".

Many of his friends are amazed that he should be writing a Regency romance; he takes a particular delight in that fact.

I will happily watch for more from this author.

There were a couple of instances which were a bit slow but all in all it was enjoyable.

He just made their engagement so romantic while infusing it with warmth and humor.

It is impossible for me to overstate the delight I experienced when I read this final installment of Mr. Hurd's remarkable trilogy. As with Volumes I and II, I must commend Mr. Hurd on his tremendous achievement of writing a very credible approximation of Regency English in both the dialogue and the tone such that I forgot, several times, that I was not reading Austen herself. The philosophical and poetic ruminations which pepper a substantial portion of the first half of the novel at first seemed too indulgent and even obtuse, but in hindsight, they serve to denote not only the paradigm shift which Darcy must undergo and the emotional turmoil he suffers but also are the perfect foil for the buoyant good humor and wit he displays when at last he secures Elizabeth's hand and heart. I was amused particularly by his flights of poetic fancy that filled in the delicious mystery of Austen's original description that he expressed himself as a man violently in love would do. The disappointing brevity of their courtship was mitigated by the loving and witty banter between the happy couple.

Honestly, I could not help but fall in love wih them all over again. Mr. Hurd made me remember that, first and foremost, these two lovers are the true progenitors of so many beloved romantic comedy couples. He just made their engagement so romantic while infusing it with warmth and humor. I was especially gratified by the inclusion of the epilogue, with its glimpse into the life of the newyweds. The scene at the breakfast table was equal parts swoon-worthy and hilarious. I could read an entire sequel composed of their romantic discussions in the midst of mundane daily activities. Who knew Perkins' aptitude for shaving could be the showcase for their palpable sexual chemistry?

Having now read all three books in this delightful series, I can truly say I feel well rewarded for having persevered until the arrival of this last book. The first P&P variation I ever read was Pamela Aidan's trilogy, "Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman," and I hold all subsequent books in this genre up to the very high standard she set, for no one has yet written anything close to hers until now. I think Mr. Hurd's effort comes very close. His characters are given a much needed depth one does not often see, as well as a careful balance of emotional states required by the events of the story. When Darcy is rejected at Hunsford, he doesn't lock himself in his room with several bottles of brandy. Rather, he behaves as a mature man would be expected to behave. His introspection is at times a bit irrational, but he manages to come to a right understanding in the end, and we feel joy along with him when Elizabeth acknowledges her change of heart and accepts his hand. And unlike most of these books, you are not forced to constantly grind your teeth over poor editing, or total lack thereof! I am now going to sit down and re-read the series with great pleasure. Thank you Mr. Hurd!

These 3 books by Stanley Hurd are the BEST!!! He is true to Jane Austin's works and the book, Pride & Prejudice. I was always looking for a book that gave Darcy's point of view - and Darcy's Tale, Volumes I, II and II did not disappoint! Highly recommend them!

Fabulous! I read this and volumes I and II in about a week's time. I was so engrossed in Darcy's thoughts and actions. Now I have the complete story to "Pride and Prejudice". I loved every page of it. The author wrote closely to Jane Austen's style.

As tempting as it was to rush through this, I made myself go back to volumes 1 and II and read from there so volume III would appear a seamless mate. It was worth the effort, for Stan has delightfully and completely filled in the gaps of how Darcy moved from unwitting arrogance to fully embracing a new vision of himself, courtesy of Elizabeth's honest scruples about his behavior toward others. I have read the other reviews and understand how the exquisite details of Darcy's life might have seemed unnecessary and redundant to some readers, but I must disagree. I found the details enlightening and profoundly creative, as only a man can do when speaking of another man. If you are looking for something that Austen would have written from the female perspective, you will be disappointed. This book is about Darcy and contains a definitive male perspective. And therein lies the treat----a fully embodied and masculine Darcy as he should be, not the neutered male that is so oft written. IMHO this 3 volume set is the perfect bookend to Austen's original work and together they form a perfect pair of the perspectives that spring from each author's gender. Well done, VERY well done. The book that will serve as the measure of all other JAFF about Darcy.

I laughed. I cried. And I will, like the other review stated, have to re-read these three volumes together. For me they are the companion to Pride and Prejudice.

As we know from the book descriptions, these volumes are from Mr. Darcy's point of view and it is a journey. I so much appreciate hearing/reading of Darcy's despair, his anger, his resentment and then his reasoning with himself as he thinks through what he actually said to Elizabeth in his proposal at Hunsford and her reactions to such. It is a process, not an overnight revelation. At one point he deems himself unworthy of ever marrying.

But a crisis with Lady Andover, his aunt, takes him to the second step in this path. Read that part very carefully - the author imparts words of wisdom for not only Darcy but also many of us in our relationships. The most important being - listen! I don't want to give away a lot of the details here but will tell you that I had tears in my eyes several times.

I don't have to tell you what happens, there are no surprises, but there are some treasures here in this retelling. Humor: Corporal Sands - loved, loved, loved how he interacted with Darcy and how Darcy kept making mental notes about his rank. I was smiling from ear to ear. Darcy's letter to Lady Catherine: chuckling out loud and clapping - understated sarcasm. Darcy's confrontations with Wickham - told in a more forceful interpretation than many others. I liked this story line - Wickham didn't walk away smug with his pockets full of Darcy's money.

I can only recommend that all lovers of P&P read this version of Darcy's Tale...and I have read the other ones. This took me about 12 hours but there were interruptions throughout. Definitely 5 stars.
