Guest Review of “True Love” by Jude Deveraux

By Susan Wiggs

Susan Wiggs

Susan Wiggs lives at the water's edge on a Puget Sound island and finds inspiration in the rhythm of the seasons, and in emotional dramas of everyday life. A No. 1 New York Times best-selling author, she has received three RITA Awards, and her novels have been translated into more than two dozen languages.

Oh, Jude, you had me at “Nantucket.” I happen to love islands. I live on one, I’ve visited many, but Nantucket holds a special place in my heart. True Love, with its star-crossed lovers and twisty plot, evokes everything that makes Nantucket so special–the history, the atmosphere, the secrets and the magic.

And Jude Deveraux, author of fan favorites like A Knight in Shining Armor, Remembrance, Sweet Liar and so many others, does the setting justice in this tale of a mismatched couple, a hunt for a lost family journal and ghosts that haunt a historic mansion. The combination is hard to resist, particularly in the hands of this author. Talented architect Jared Kingsley Montgomery (yes, those Montgomerys, be still my heart)--a hero from a long line of smart, sexy and soft-hearted Montgomery men--braces himself for the arrival of Alix Madsen, who has been bequeathed Jared’s ancestral mansion for a period of one year. The surprises begin in the prologue--when we realize Jared’s conversation with the 30-something Caleb is actually with a ghost, one who yearns for answers and closure.

Alix, still smarting from a broken heart, is in need of a change, though the last thing she’s looking for is romance. She’s content in the role of planning her best friend’s wedding, until she meets Jared. She also has a gift for sensing the presence of ghosts, and is specifically charged with figuring out what became of Caleb Kingsley and the mysterious Valentina, a long-lost Montgomery relative. In the process, she unravels the secrets of her own family, finding a deeper understanding of her mother.

Jared, a commitment-phobe who claims he might find the Evil Queen more interesting than Cinderella, can’t deny his sizzling chemistry with Alix. The result is as romantic and mysterious as falling in love.

Longtime fans will appreciate the shout-outs to Montgomery and Taggert characters from past books, and new readers will celebrate the launch of this fresh, fun trilogy of Nantucket stories. Following the happily-every-after ending is even happier news–there's more to come.

From Booklist

Best-selling romance author Deveraux is at her spellbinding romantic finest as she launches the brand-new Nantucket Brides series. The story follows young Alix Madsen, a brokenhearted architect student, who unexpectedly becomes the owner of a quaint little Nantucket property. Adelaide Kingsley has left the home to Madsen in her will, but who Kingsley is and what her relationship is to the family remains in question. While Alix moves in and gets busy planning her best friend’s wedding, she starts falling for the charming architect living in the guest house. But even with all the romance in the air, she becomes aware that Kingsley left the house to Alix in order to help solve an old family mystery. Throughout the novel, secrets slowly emerge within the house and among Deveraux’s characters, inducing Alix to question everything and everyone she knows, including her new love interest. Readers will be eager for the next installment. --Carissa Chesanek --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I'm a Jude fan from waaaaaay back. I loved many of her books, and some I didn't. I think this one is a winner, and NOT just because we get reintroduced to the Montgomery-Taggert clans, although they are very welcome.

There are elements of Sweet Liar, Remembrance, and Lavender Morning to this book, supernatural elements included. Female protagonist Alix is to spend a year in a house on Nantucket with Jared Montgomery Kingsley, a world-famous architect. Alix is a just-graduated architect herself, so Kingsley is her hero. She doesn't realize that she's been to this house before. She's met Jared before, and her own parents have spent tons of time there without her.

Jared doesn't want to be a hero; he just wants to be "a guy." Let me add here that Jared doesn't know he's one of THOSE Montgomerys, and doesn't meet his extended family for the first time until halfway through the book. He's much more concerned with the Kingsley side of the family, which includes a ghost, a legacy, and a mystery.

Don't laugh, but one of the most important characters in this book is...Nantucket. Yes, Nantucket takes on a life of its own, and you FEEL as though you're there. I was only there once in my life when I was too young to appreciate it, but I certainly feel now as though I'm familiar with it! Note: If you're driven to go there for Downyflake donuts, bring cash because they don't accept credit cards. (But there's a cash machine on the premises.)

As far as Montgomerys and Taggerts, you get to see a Taggert who I thought was getting her own book long, long ago; visit with Mike and Kane Taggert and their wives (I can't believe those guys are in their 50s now--time does fly!); and hobnob with the royal family of Lanconia.

I have always loved the books of Jude Deveraux. She does a time travel love story better than anybody. This was not so much a time travel book as it was a book of reincarnation. Although I read through it quickly and it kept me interested, it wasn't nearly as good as many of her earlier books were.

It takes place on Nantucket Island and involves many, many people who seem to eat quite often. Alix is spending time in an old house for a year after graduation from college. She is a budding Architect who is taking a year off. Alix's mother asked her to stay at this house as a request from an old lady she befriended years earlier. Aunt "Addy" put in her will that she would like Alix to stay at the house and try to find out what happened to Valentina, a long ago relative that vanished.

Alix meets Jared Montgomery Kingsley while staying at this house. He is the very handsome man whose family is all over the island and Aunt "Addy" was his great aunt. Jared is also one of the most famous architects in the country and she wants him to see her work.

The deeper story is the two hundred year old "Ghost" that lives in the house, Caleb Kingsley. It appears that only the boy decendants of Caleb are the ones to see him and as it turns out maybe Alix does as well. Valentina is the long lost love of Caleb. If this is hard to follow, it only gets worse. There are many people in this story and many storylines.

If you like this author, then you will like this book. It is a love story as well and it will touch your heart. Again, I do not think it is nearly as good as some of her earlier books. Three and half stars.

Jude Deveraux's 'True Love' is the first in the Nantucket Brides Trilogy, and I can't wait for the next one to come out. Alix is not too thrilled about spending one year in a beautiful old home in Nantucket--an arrangement in the will of a woman she hasn't seen since she was four years old--but since it came on the heels of a nasty breakup with her boyfriend and she's just graduated architectural school, she figures why not. World famous architect/womanizer Jared Montgomery Kingsley is temporarily staying in the guesthouse, waiting to inherit the mansion after Alix's year is up.

When they meet, she thinks he's a conceited ass and he thinks she's a bothersome student. Alix plans to work on her design portfolio, and has to plan her BFF's wedding, but the longer she's in the house, the more things she remembers. And there's a ghost who expects her to solve the mystery of what happened to his one true love two hundred years before.

Jude Deveraux is one of my favorite romance authors. Her characters are fun, intriguing, and usually get themselves into some kind of trouble. :) The people in this trilogy come from all different backgrounds, and the Nantucket setting is the perfect backdrop for these stories. I'm anxiously awaiting to see which couple the next book focuses on.

Adelaide Kingsley, the matriarch of a nineteenth-century home, has just passed away. Her family has always left the Kingsley Nantucket home to the oldest son, but Adelaide has given the home one year to Alix Madsen...someone who isn't even family.

Alix Madsen doesn't understand why the Kingsley's have given her their home and why both her parents are pushing her to take a year in the beautiful old house. The truth is Alix has been kept in the dark most of her life about her and her parents lives on Nantucket Island.

Alix is an up and coming architech, right out of school and it just so happens that she dreams of working for Jared Kingsley...the same Jared that was suppose to inherit the Kingsley home she now has possession of.

There is also a matter of a quirky 5 times great grandfather ghost in residence at the Kingsley home, a ghost with his own agenda. Only the male family members have been able to see the Captain through out their lives but when Alix visited the Kingsley home at the age of 4 she developed a relationship with the Captain/ghost.

Alix and Jared discover that their lives have been connected for years. Passions ignite and life will never be the same on this cozy island off the USA eastern seaboard.

A quirky and fun romance with a paranormal twist, True Love is a brilliantly developed tale! Basked in the history of the beautiful ghost ridden island of Nantucket, you can't help but fall in love with the island, characters and the story Jude Deveraux wove for us to enjoy. Drenched in family bonds, you have the feeling of homecoming as you turn the pages. Superb story of love, friends, happiness and home! Don't miss your chance to take a trip to Nantucket, you'll be glad you came!
