Editorial Reviews

Review

The water and the beauty of the Breakwater Bay becomes almost another character in the story.  The historical homes add depth to the whole  picture of Breakwater Bay. -- Examiner.com --Pamela Kramer

Noble's latest is a testament to the concept that family is what one makes it ... and the intense romance that builds between Meri and Alden is slow, careful and full of possibilities -- which will appeal to readers who prefer romantic stories on the realistic side. -- Romantic Times Book Review Sarah Eisenbraun

Breakwater Bay is a riveting story that takes place in and around Newport, Rhode Island ... Characters are very well drawn, dialogue is great! highly recommend this book. --Sacramento Public Library

Riveting and emotional, Noble's latest has the perfect combination of suspense and romance set against the idyllic simplicity of the New England coast.--Sheri Melnick

BREAKWATER BAY is a thought provoking novel about choices... This is my fifth book by Noble, and she does not disappoint, as she is the queen of restoration--with transformations, of old to new, from places, things, to lives of her rich characters. --
JudyDCollinsMustReads.com

A book rich in depth and story line, Breakwater Bay is one that will resonate with many readers.  It has a touch a history, a touch of mystery and family drama that creates a story worth reading and one to be remembered.  Mrsmommybooknerd.blogspot.com

Breakwater Bay examines the power of family and the importance of shared history. Noble immerses the reader in idyllic Newport, and its undeniable charm and unpredictable coastline serve as the perfect backdrop for Meri’s discovery... This tender, romantic novel is a perfect beach read. (Booklist)

From the Back Cover

An abandoned baby, a glorious old Newport mansion, and awakening romance swirl the glittering waters of Breakwater Bay . . .

Preservationist Meri Hollis loves her latest project, restoring one of Newport's forgotten Gilded Age mansions. And with summer approaching, she'll be able to spend more time with her grandmother on the Rhode Island shore. She has a great job, a loving family, and she's pretty sure her boyfriend is going to propose on her thirtieth birthday.

But everything Meri believes about family, happiness, truth, and love is shattered when her family's darkest secret is exposed.

Thirty years before, Meri's neighbor and friend, Alden Corrigan, took his father's dinghy out to fish. In a sudden storm, he rushed to help a woman stranded on the breakwater. She was just a girl . . . a very pregnant girl who disappeared soon after they reached safety—but not before she left behind a special gift.

Now that the truth is out, life will change for everyone in Breakwater Bay, and Meri and Alden will have to make decisions that could ensure their future together . . . or separate them for good.

Meri Hollis's life seems perfect she has a loving supporting family, a boyfriend, a job she loves, and friends but on her 30th birthday her family will tell her the truth about her past that will send her looking for answers. I personally think that Meri handled the news fairly well I don't think that I would be as composed about it as she was to find out my "family" is not technically my "family".

Alden, her Gran's neighbor, though a teenager when Meri was born was like a big brother to her until her and her family moved away when she was in her teens but even then he kept a close eye on her from afar. But why? The intensity of his devotion seems like a bit much, at least to me, Meri of course does not question it because he has always just been there but when a promise made long ago is revealed to her Meri starts to look at Alden a bit different. So is her entire relationship with Alden just an obligation that he feels he needs to keep filling because of a promise he made 30 years ago?
But is it more than that? For both Alden and Meri.

A heart-warming story of family and a love that has always been there! This was one of the better chick-lit books that I have read this year.

BREAKWATER BAY, takes readers back to the coastal area of Rhode Island, Newport's forgotten Gilded Age Mansions, where we pick up from Newport Dreams (novella)--I would recommend reading prior to Breakwater Bay.

Newport Dreams featured Geordie (a photographer) who comes to work on a restoration project called The Gilbert House. There she meets Bruce, Doug, and the two girls featured in Breakwater Bay -Carlyn and main character, Meri.

BREAKWATER BAY opens with Meri's thirtieth birthday, a preservationist restoring this mansion back to its glory, uncovers hidden gems (both in the building as well as her life). She enjoys spending time with her Gram at Candler Farm and her neighbor, Alden who has been a friend since she was a child. Little does she know his deep connection to this family.

However after her surprise birthday party, she drives out to her Gram's house to continue the celebration, and gets the shock of her life. She finds out she was adopted and her Gram and her step-dad gives her letters from her mom, who died several years ago.

Everything changes for Meri. She now has to figure out her past, and her real family and her own identity. In addition, the current boyfriend, Peter is going off to law school and she is not sure she even wants a future with him.

However, there is more about her past as she begins to uncover dark family secrets. At the same time, she finds her relationship with her Gram's next door neighbor, may be more than just friendship.

BREAKWATER BAY is a thought provoking novel about choices.

there are just some books you don't want to have end and this was one of them.
And that happens when you get totally involved with all the characters in the book.
I guess the message throughout is that you don't (can't) really see what's best for you when
it's right in front of you and how hard it is to admit that maybe the direction you're headed
in is not the right direction.

You just want to hug Alden and shake Meri to wake them both up and then you want to hug both of them.

Several of the books I've read recently have this similar premise and I don't seem to tire of it.
The authors just seem to capture my undivided attention.

I loved the atmospheric feel to this novel. Very gothic – although not really dark – with the huge, drafty house on the shore; the almost reclusive, handsome man (Alden) who owns the house; and the young woman (Meri) who suddenly needs him more than she ever realized. It’s a tale of honor, responsibility, and what exactly constitutes a family. In the end, family is not determined solely by blood but, more than that, the people who will do anything for you – the people who want to be a part of your life.

Shelley Noble included a good amount of detail of Meri’s preservation work in the story. I loved reading about it and could envision the beauty of the Newport mansion her team was restoring.

I would have liked the end of the novel fleshed out a bit more than it was but I was nonetheless pleased with the conclusion. Breakwater Bay is a good summer read – take it to the beach or read it at home and imagine yourself reading at the Rhode Island shore.

I’ll jump at the chance to read stories from New England, mostly because I am familiar with the area and do miss being able to be at the shore or the mountains in under an hour. Shelley Noble’s new release is set in Rhode Island, and uses the feel and power of the sea to great effect.

Merielle is very much in touch with history: as a well-regarded restoration professional who specializes in paint and decorative details, her work to reclaim the glory of the original finishes on famous and not so famous grand houses is a constant delight. Additionally, her family is well-grounded in the history of the state, her family having been rooted along the coast for generations. Constants in Meri’s life are her family and Aiden, her grandmother’s neighbor.

Aiden is also the son of a long standing Rhode Island family, and lives in their ‘great house’ in land that abuts Meri’s family land. Aiden is a well-regarded illustrator and all-around great guy but for his obsession with his solitary state. A bad marriage and even worse relationship with his ex-wife, as well as longstanding issues from his mother’s desertion years ago have him needing and wanting connections even as he runs from them. All of them but Meri. Years ago he made a promise to watch out for her, and in his mind, that little boy is still required to take care of her, of things, of everyone.

On Meri’s 30th birthday, everything changes when a long held secret is revealed. Not only does Meri start to reexamine her entire life and who she believed she was, she is grappling with an attraction to Aiden that she cannot deny.
