Shelley Shepard Gray is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, a finalist for the American Christian Fiction Writers prestigious Carol Award, and a two-time HOLT Medallion winner. She lives in southern Ohio, where she writes full-time, bakes too much, and can often be found walking her dachshunds on her town’s bike trail.

Hopeful is the the first book in the Return to Sugarcreek series by Shelley Shepard Gray. It is also the first book that I have read by this author. I would definitely choose to read one of her books again.
Miriam Zehr has loved Junior Beiler for as long as she can remember. She hopes and dreams that some day he'll see her for who she is and love her too.
When it finally seems that Junior has taken an interest in her, Junior dashes that hope by asking her to introduce him to Mary Kate Hershberger, who is their community's school teacher and Miriam's best friend.
Although it is not easy for her, Miriam agrees to help Junior, even though she knows how difficult it will be to see the two of them together.
Even though it seems that Miriam isn't going to get her turn at love, marriage and family she still carries that hope in her heart.
When I first started to read Hopeful I wasn't sure that I was going to like the story because I had a hard time connecting with the characters. But as I continued to read I found that I was truly enjoying the book, even reading it well into the night. I really enjoyed the time I spent getting to know the characters and now look forward to the next book in the Return to Sugarcreek series, Thankful. (The first chapter of Thankful is provided at the end of the book.)

It seems that no matter our age and circumstance, most young girls, especially those of us that have grown up in homes teaching Christian virtues, do not see themselves as having any beauty, and yet look on their peers as having more than they do. Miriam is a typical young girl in this way. It does not help the situation when the young men, in looking for someone to marry judge others also by this criteria, and thus the conflict. The novel Hopeful reminds us all that not only is beauty only skin deep, it is also in the eye of the beholder.
Shelley has the talent to bring her novels to the reader in such a way that we feel like we see life through the main characters, and the scenes come alive in her choice of vivid images. This novel is the first one in the Return to Sugarcreek, and I look forward to the next one continuing the saga of those I met this time.

This is Book 1 in the new Return to Sugarcreek series. I am already looking forward to Book 2. What I loved most about this book was the truths it told, and followed a story everyone can relate to in some way.
What would you do if the person you loved wanted you to help them find love with someone else? Although not everyone will experience this, I'm sure most people can relate to "the one that got away". It was encouraging to see how Miriam handled herself in this situation and watch how she put others ahead of herself. Now, I'm not sure I could have done what she did, but I admired the Christ like way she treated others.
The relationships between Miriam and Junior and Mary Kathryn were shown in a deep and creative way. I felt drawn in to the story and became a part of it myself. The characters were brought to life in unique and creative ways which allow the reader to really relate to each one.

This book is the first in a new series by Shelley Shepard Gray. Some of the characters have appeared in her "Seasons of Sugarcreek" series. It was like hearing updates and catching up with old friends. This book focuses on Miriam Zehr. She has had a crush on Junior Beiler for many years. He has never noticed her before but he suddenly approaches her. She is ecstatic but soon realizes that he wants her help courting her best friend Mary Kate Hershberger. Miriam is devastated but she is so kind that she agrees to help Junior even though her heart is breaking. Mary Kate, the pretty schoolteacher, has issues and secrets of her own. I liked that the situations seem real and not contrived. The relationships were realistic and had both ups and downs. I was pleased with the ending and can't wait for the next in the series. I can't decide which of the characters that I would like Shelley to focus on in the next book. I'm part of Shelley's group "The Buggy Bunch."

I really enjoyed reading this book. I found myself relating to Miriam's character's willingness to put her feelings on the back burner to make everyone else happy. She is always second guessing herself. I have always felt self concious about my body and this character really touched me. After reading this book, I certainly plan on reading more.

That hope never seems to die. Miriam has loved Junior for years and hopes that some day he’ll return that love. Then as he seems to be noticing her, Junior stomps on that hope.
He just wants her to help him get the attention of her friend, Mary Kate. It’s not easy for her, but Miriam agrees to help Junior, knowing how difficult it’s going to be every time she sees the two of them together.
It seems that Miriam isn’t going to get her turn at love, marriage and family like all her other friends. But she remains hopeful.
Ms Gray has given us another good read in this first book of the Return to Sugarcreek series. I’m looking forward to book two.
