Book Description

A standalone, contemporary romance....

He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.

He speaks Spanish. I speak English.

He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.

He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.

He’s married and has a five-year old daughter.

I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.

Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the damn truth.

***

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Spanish charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.

Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.

Something that can never, ever be.

Or so she thinks

"A three-dimensional love story with depth, hope, and heart-wrenching consequences. This book makes me want to drop everything and fly to Spain." - K.A. Tucker, author of Ten Tiny Breaths

"I have to say that this is the most emotional and beautiful book Halle has written. She's written great love stories before but there was nothing else to distract you here, no horror, no action. This is all emotions, real and gritty and hard." - Ginger Read Reviews

It's a story of two people from opposite sides of the world that find something in each other that makes them question what it is to live and what it is to just be alive. I dare you not to be moved by the story of Vera and Mateo." - My Book Muse

"You can't fall in love in a week."
"You can fall in love in a second. The heart has no regard for time."

Have you ever found a story that makes you feel as if you've always known it, a million different memories from your own life flickering before your eyes as you read it, filling you with overwhelming melancholy and longing, only to recognise it as nothing more than a youthful dream that never happened? I was completely unprepared for this book. Being a massive fan of Karina Halle's extraordinary brand of storytelling, I knew that loving this book would not be a farfetched possibility, but I never expected to connect with a story so completely, so personally, and so unconditionally, that it felt like I could taste every emotion, every mood, every hope, forcing myself to savour it for as long as I could because I never wanted to part with the characters. The is the story of two lone stars adrift in their own galaxies of unhappiness, whose lives change and gain colour the moment they meet. Against all odds, and even against their own better judgement, they find their home in one another, their story defying our preconceptions of the meant-to-be scenario and showing us how unpredictable and unyielding true love can be. Every part of this atypical fairy tale moved me, my heart swelling from joy one moment and crying from sorrow the very next, making this book one of the most surreally beautiful and yet truly realistic tales I have ever come across.

"Are you afraid that love will clip your wings?"
"No, I'm afraid that losing love will."

Vera Miles is a young woman in her early twenties, the black sheep in her family and a stranger in her own life.

Wow. I must first say that cheating is a big no no for me in books but I decided to step out of my comfort zone and read this book and I'm glad I did. This book sucked me in from page one. I loved Vera and Mateo. I loved their story although it was hard to read sometimes and very real.

Mateo and Vera meet at a four week long vacation of sorts where Spanish speaking professionals meet up with English speaking people at a resort. The point is to learn conversational English. Vera decides to do this during dinner break and meets the very married Mateo. During their time, they grow very close. Their lines begin to blur towards the end and then they are crossed.

Mateo is a 38 year old married retired soccer turned restaurant entrepreneur who speaks fluent Spanish and little English. He has a 5 year old daughter. Vera is a 23 year old college student who is covered in tattoos and piercings. She speaks no Spanish at all. She lives by the seat of her pants and never commits to anything. These two couldn't be more different but the attraction and pull they feel towards each other can't be denied.

This story really picks up once they return home, Vera to Canada and Mateo to Madrid. I liked how Mateo finally did the right thing and eventually left his wife though it was hard for him to do because of his daughter. It was obvious he loved Vera but he wanted to make the right decisions for his daughter. I loved them together. He brought the best out in Vera and vice versa. They really completed each other. She was his Estrella, his wild side... she brought out the life in him like no other. He, on the other hand, kept her grounded and gave her a purpose. He made her feel loved which she had never really felt.

Adventurous twenty-three year-old free spirit Vera Miles forgoes her astronomy internship for the opportunity to travel to Spain and teach Spaniards conversational English, in exchange for room and board. While tatted up and pierced, Vera looks tough as nails, seems wild, and makes no excuses for her love of casual hook-ups and keeping people at arm’s length, throughout this story, we get a glimpse of the person behind the persona.
“I'm starting to think that most villains aren't evil—they are just misunderstood.”
She labels herself a villain, but that is so far from the truth. She’s intelligent, brutally honest, has a heart of gold, yet seems so lost, and is desperate to be loved. To feel worthy. To belong.

Thirty-eight year-old Mateo Casalles is a former fútbol player turned successful business man from Madrid. He and Vera become instant friends on the bus ride to their home for the next month in Acantilado. He’s charming, funny, sexy, passionate, sensitive, swoon-worthy and… married. YIKES! While, to the average person, Mateo may look like a man who has it all, as we get to know him we realize that appearances are truly deceiving. In reality, he might be even lonelier than Vera.
“You will see. Sometimes you are stuck being the person you are and not the person you were, or could be.”

As always, with a Karina Halle book, you get a story that is beautifully crafted. She breathes life into her colorful cast of characters and gives you such vivid imagery of their surroundings that you are suddenly transported to the town of Acantilado, Spain, feeling very much like a voyeur. You are submerged in her brilliant story and share in every bit of happiness, sexual tension, desire, anxiety, loneliness, uncertainty, and doubt that Mateo and Vera experience.
